The end of the Cold War ushered in a new age of European expansion. Central and Eastern Europe had emerged from dictatorships and wanted to consolidate their democracies. They sought European integration to ensure they would not fall back into the Russian sphere of influence. The EU and NATO offered a guarantee of this security, and the EU was seen as vital to ensuring the economic success of those countries. Russia — a shell of its former power as the Soviet Union — could do nothing to slow the European expansion.
But then things changed.
Oil prices increased, bolstering Russia's economy. Putin came to power, and despite political discontent in Russia, his popularity remained strong. In 2008, war broke out between Russia and the NATO-aspirant, former Soviet country of Georgia. Russia's resurgence had begun, exemplified by the 2014 annexation of Crimea and invasion of eastern Ukraine.
Europe Divided is a game of an expansionist Europe, a resurgent Russia, and a new Cold War.

What's in the Box
In the game, you control of one of the two powers: Europe (controlling both NATO and the European Union) or Russia. You manage conflicts of political and military influence, vying for control over Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Caucasus. Europe is powerful and rich, but bureaucratic and slow to react. Russia lacks Europe's resources, but can respond rapidly.
Europe Divided takes place over two periods: 1992-2008 (New World Order) and 2008-2019 (New Cold War). Players score victory points by having dominant influence in contested countries in Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and the Caucasus. They can also score victory points by bringing key historical events to fruition. The player with the most victory points at the end of the two periods wins.
Europe Divided is rich with history and includes today's potential flashpoints, but it features a fast-playing card-driven core mechanism. Players use cards associated with countries they control to establish political and military influence, gain financial resources, and build and deploy their military presence. An elegant deck-manipulation mechanism weakens players' decks as they increase their influence, creating tension between seeking to expand and overreaching. Players also compete over key political events throughout the game. Will the Velvet Revolution result in the split of the Czech Republic and Slovakia? How will the Bosnian War end? The players will decide the fate of history throughout this period of Europe Divided.

Please read David Thompson’s note on the Future Variant:
Of all the things we talked about during the development of the game, this addition is the one I am the most excited about. It was relatively late in the design when Jaro — the lead developer — challenged me with an idea: what if we added future events to the game? I loved the concept. I remember back fondly to our frantic early morning messaging chats, where we sent each other headlines from all over Europe. Potential issues facing Eastern and Central Europe, as well as the Caucasus. We argued over a few (all good natured of course!), but in the end, I think that this expansion of the game is really going to be an exciting addition. The expansion adds twelve new headlines cards — six for each player, of course — that allows you to extend the game into the hypothetical future. Instead of adding a third period, it simply expands the second period for a handful more turns. This has the advantage of seamlessly integrating the new headlines, without changing the core structure of the game. In my opinion, it also showcases the potential of the core system moving forward. There are so many possibilities. Do Georgia and Ukraine join NATO, or maybe there’s a renewal of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict? Is it possible Russia will make a military play for the Baltics? This expansion gives you the chance to answer those questions.
- David Thompson
Future Variant will be added to the game if we reach 50.000 GBP goal before the campaign ends.

Additional items may increase shipping costs. PHALANX is responsible for shipping the English and Polish editions of the game. The games will be shipped out from the EU - for European Union backers; from the US - for US backers; from Canada - for Canadian backers; and from EU, using FedEx air freight - for Asian, Australian and Rest of the World backers. Risks and challenges
PHALANX has been publishing board games since 2009.
Our products are known for great quality, just like our customer service. We publish games with the largest companies on the market, like Academy Games, Asyncron Games, Cranio Creations, Crowd Games, Ediciones MasQueOca, Feuerland Spiele, Galapagos Jogos, KOSMOS, Mayfair Games, and Stonemaier Games.
This is our sixth Kickstarter campaign: in 2016 we successfully fulfilled the Germania Magna campaign, and Mark Simonitch’s Hannibal & Hamilcar in 2018. U-BOOT is in delivery now, and Nanty Narking and Freedom! are currently in production.
We do not expect delays in production, but unforeseen issues may arise during manufacturing and shipping. We estimate that in the worst case scenario, the production might suffer delays of at most 30-60 days, and shipping & customs may add an extra 15-45 days. We are experienced with large production runs, and we are preparing back-up plans for each step of the project, from production to shipping and final delivery.
By backing this project you agree that our primary responsibility to you is to ship your order as entered into the pledge management system. You are responsible for import or other duties that may be payable to relevant tax authorities. You also accept that you are fully liable for incorrect shipping details and will risk your pledge being undeliverable or lost in transit. We are unable to ship to PO Boxes. We allow a maximum of one delivery location per backer, regardless of the number of pledges /copies ordered.
Please note that geopolitical events not under our control, such as Brexit and the imposition of new tariffs on the access of goods to a country, may change the terms we offer to residents of such countries, even if we guarantee we will do our best to avoid such issues.
If you do not accept the proposed terms, then please do not back this project; wait for the retail release.
