Withstand the stranglehold of the stronghold-like city and give a gallant account of your will, steadfastness, and guerrilla wit. Prove your determination and tactical mastery to entomb your rebellious opponents under the ruined walls of the besieged city and the broken dreams of Freedom! Never has a two-player game been so asymmetrically diversified. Never has a card-driven game allowed you to drive your opponent up the wall so mercilessly. Never has a siege game been so captivating!
Freedom! is a siege game, a test of will, endurance, and tactics between the besieged Freedom Fighters and the besieging Imperial Forces, who have come to crush the rebellion. This universal contest is presented through a dramatic history of the siege of a Greek Holy City (Messolonghi) by Ottoman forces during the Greek War of Independence (1821-1829).
Freedom! gives you an opportunity not only to experience the genuine momentum of besieging the city with your infantry and artillery, but also to illustrate and participate in complexity of such a bold endeavor on a much bigger scale. It shows many tactical intricacies and enables you to implement and proceed with various strategic decisions as both imperial forces and city defenders.
To underline this feature, the action cards may be used either to perform a given action from the list of actions (each faction has a different list) or as a one-time action associated with some particular historical event or character. The choice is yours, and the ensuing possibilities and further decisions - abundant. You will maneuver your forces according to ongoing circumstances.
Due to the fact that the gameplay is highly asymmetrical, each faction is going to approach this task differently. You will experience firsthand all the hardships associated with the siege: the advancement of your infantry, sudden shortage of cannons in your campsite, the city defenders’ raids on your units, not to mention the rejected plea for help form your sovereign (the longer the siege, the more unfavorable his decisions). On the other hand, as a defender you will be exposed to constant difficulties in repairing walls, rationing food supply, and amassing action points to train new troops out of civilians.
Yet there is a whole new dimension to it. Playing the part of imperial forces, you have to build your chain of actions by combining military methods with logistical ones. The battle itself takes place on two maps: one showing the actual city and the forces involved in the siege, and the other with the surrounding areas, highlighting the support that each of them provides to both players. Each area offers different types of supply to either faction. The approach towards the siege varies between both sides of the conflict. Rebellion forces, highly outnumbered and facing constant supply shortages, may wish to reclaim one or more areas on the regional map to improve their resources gain at the beginning of each new round. This, on the other hand, would not only make the imperial forces short on one of their own resources, but also force them to use up action cards which otherwise would have been spent on something else.
Conversely, the besieging side could focus more on building its strategy to break the city’s defense by drawing the opponent’s attention to something else (e.g. deploy a small amount of units ashore to fake an assault on one of the isles in order to make the defenders regroup their forces and thus less numerous in one particular part of the wall - the place of the real attack).
All in all, the goals are simple: the invaders have to get inside the city before the end of the game or force the citizens to give up by dropping their morale to zero. The defenders, on the other hand, try to withstand the siege and protect the city long enough for the invaders to abandon their attempt either by deciding to leave on their own or by having their morale dropped to zero. Yet, as in everyday life, the ways to accomplish the victory are far from being a piece of cake. Being a loose cannon could end up with your troops becoming cannon fodder.
So think smart and have your men buckle up their musket straps! Freedom calls!

Our Goal and Stretch Goals
With this campaign we are back to Kickstarter basics. The design is complete, with 4 years of development and playtesting behind it (please check the designer’s diary here). There will be no rule-changing expansions and stretch goals. We will use them only to improve the components, and to enrich gameplay. We are offering a great product at a great price and a short fulfillment period. There is no hidden agenda. We are offering a great and simple deal.
Support Freedom! now to:
- get a Kickstarter Exclusive resin game round marker miniature, inspired by famous Eugène Delacroix’s paint Greece on the ruins of Missolonghi.
- Save 20% off the suggested retail price (60 GBP, 70 EUR, 80 USD).
- Unlock the new components and improve the recent game components.
- Receive the game before it hits retail distribution.
- Help an independent publisher design, develop, and publish unique, challenging games.
- Help the renowned game designer to publish his Labour of Love project.
The game will be published if we reach the funding goal: £20.000. Then we will continue our assault for some Stretch Goals. They are added to every Kickstarter game for free.
You can still take part in pre-order of our previous Kickstarter: Nanty Narking and save £20 on this Martin Wallace’s bestseller.
Production and Delivery
Please note that the graphic materials presented here are not yet final and may be changed. The photos are of handmade prototypes of the game. The final production quality will be much, much higher.
The games are produced in the EU, in keeping with the proven high standards of PHALANX. If you back us on Kickstarter, you will receive your copy several weeks before the game reaches any retail outlets! Our goal is to produce Freedom! within 120 days of reaching our funding goal. Kickstarter backers will have their copies delivered no later than October 2019.

Risks and challenges
PHALANX has been publishing board games since 2009.
Our products are known for great quality, just like our customer service. We publish games with the largest companies on the market, like Academy Games, Asyncron Games, Cranio Creations, Crowd Games, Ediciones MasQueOca, Feuerland Spiele, Galapagos Jogos, KOSMOS, Mayfair Games and Stonemaier Games.
This is our fifth Kickstarter campaign: in 2016 we successfully fulfilled the Germania Magna campaign, and Mark Simonitch’s Hannibal & Hamilcar in 2018. U-BOOT is in delivery now, and Nanty Narking is currently in production.
We do not expect delays in production, but unforeseen issues may arise during manufacturing and shipping. We estimate that in the worst case scenario, the production might suffer delays of at most 30-60 days, and shipping & customs may add an extra 15-45 days. We are experienced with large production runs, and we are preparing back-up plans for each step of the project, from production to shipping and final delivery.

If you do not accept the proposed terms, then please do not back this project; wait for the retail release.
