The Philadelphia Film Society, the organization which produces the annual Philadelphia Film Festival, will assume operations and reopen the Roxy Theater located in Philadelphia's historic Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. It will operate as a first-run independent theater, providing festival-type films all year long.
There are fewer than 44 movie screens in the Philadelphia area. The Philadelphia Film Society (PFS) is committed to bringing the best in cinema to Philadelphia because we believe in the power of film to inspire, educate, and entertain.
The Roxy is due for a facelift, as it has not undergone major building maintenance, upgrades to seating, wall treatments, or carpeting for countless years. Projection updates are also needed, to make the necessary transition from 35mm film projection to digital. In order to attract patrons, the Roxy needs to be welcoming, clean, and state-of-the-art.
Many funding sources are being utilized in order to accomplish the Roxy's digital conversion and building renovations, but we are coming up short. In order to open in spring 2013, we need to quickly raise $40,000. This project will cover the cost of the seating in both theaters.
It is PFS’s intention to renovate the two theaters, adding new seating, flooring, digital projection, screens, sound systems, and a central computerized system. PFS also intends to renovate the lobby and concession area, adding a new ticketing system, digital monitors and new concession machines, as well as adding a new marquee outside of the venue. PFS budgets the capital needed to accomplish the majority of this, along with a contingency and overhead costs, at approximately $600,000.
The PFS Theater at the Roxy will provide an exceptional screening experience, and be a hub for film lovers in Philly. Our programming vision includes film series discussion groups, mini festivals and film events that will create partnerships with other non-profit groups in Philadelphia. We will present the best in current international and independent film that is not available anywhere else in the city.
PFS has been welcomed by the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood and we would love for our friends and neighbors to be part of the PFS Theater at the Roxy. Anyone who gives a gift over $500 will be recognized as a Founding Member of the theater.
It is a great time to get involved with PFS! We have over 900 members who are committed to the festival and enjoy movies year round. PFS is excited to breathe new life into the Roxy and establish a hub for film lovers in Philly - The PFS Theater at the Roxy. Thank you for your support!
Risks and challenges
The most formidable challenge that may arise after the PFS Theater at the Roxy is open is sustaining an audience.
PFS feels that by diversifying its programming, offering films not available elsewhere, and partnering with area organizations, we can successfully cultivate new audiences. PFS will develop programs for children and youth, to inspire young filmmakers, and provide access to film for under-served populations. We also look forward to serving the senior population in the neighborhood, and working with our neighbors to provide community building opportunities.
PFS has full-time staff committed to finding new funding sources, and a supportive Board of Directors that requires fiscal responsibility. PFS has experienced exponential growth in the past few years and has added staff and resources to keep pace with membership interest and the growth of the Philadelphia Film Festival. Based on our growth, having our own space is a natural next step. We are confident that there is an audience in Philadelphia for the renovated, state of the art, PFS Theater at the Roxy.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
