Romo and the Future

Hi Kickstarters!

What an exciting campaign we’ve had! 992 Romos have found loving homes. With 1,089 backers in 52 different countries, it’s been an awesome adventure.

The little bot has had an amazing time!

Some of you might have noticed the sudden absence of Romo-focused emails in your inboxes. We’re writing to let you know that we still have lots of news to share about Romo and Romotive, but from now on, our website will be the central hub for all things Romo.

We hope you’ll stay in touch and visit our site once in a while to see what Romo’s been up to. We’re always excited to hear about Romos and their families! So whether it’s on our forums, blog, Twitter, Facebook, or even an old school email, let us know how you’re doing!

If you find yourself missing the occasional Romo and Romotive-focused email, feel free to stop by the site and sign up for our newsletter! We promise not to bother you as much as we did here on Kickstarter - just the occasional check in and Nerd love.

Finally, all of us here at Romotive would like to express our gratitude for the generous help and support that we’ve received from each of you Kickstarters. Time and again, Kickstarter has proven to be a wonderful community that we are so thankful to be a part of. As Romotive continues to grow, we want all of you to know that it was your early support that enabled us to make this crazy Romo dream of ours a reality.

With love,
Romo+Romotive Nerds

App Update: Say Hello to V2.2!

Romo’s New App is *Finally* Here!

We know you’ve been anxiously waiting for us to fix issues and update Romo’s app.

Our Software team spent the last two months chasing down 1800 crashes and fixing the underlying issues behind 1400 of them. Thank you so much to all of you who spent time with Jess, Bobby, James, Phu and me diagnosing problems.

Today the new app is here. It’s been approved by Apple and we’re pushing it live. You should see it in the store very soon.

In addition to bug fixes, we’ve added some experimental new features that we’d like your help to test.

You’ll notice a change from the first time you open the new app. Romo will start off not in Creature Mode, but in a Tutorial mode that requires only a single docked device.

There’s a new main menu screen called “Modes.” Access this by swiping your finger down on Romo’s screen like you’re scrolling down a page.

At the end of the Tutorial, Romo will leave you in Face Follow mode. To get back to his new Modes menu, just swipe your finger down on the top half of his screen.

Here are some test features we’d like your help evaluating in this build:

Hello Romo. The first time you launch Romo’s new app, he’ll show you how he works. Get hints anytime - just click on his new “Tutorial” in the Modes menu (only 1 device needed).

New Sleep Mode. If you leave Romo alone for a few minutes, he’ll take a quick nap. Wake him up by tickling his nose or putting your face close to his (only 1 device needed).

Romo Fitness. Now Romo gets fitter the more you drive him. If he’s out of shape, he’ll get tired. He may even start panting. Check his heartbeat by accessing the “Vitals” screen to see how he’s doing. Here you can also check the distance your Romo has traveled.

Create a Custom Mode. Create new behavior patterns for Romo using easy action/reaction sequences. Best of all, you only need one device docked on Romo’s base to use this new feature. Click “Create” on the Modes menu to get started.

We’re listening to your feedback and working our bots off to fix all bugs. Here are some things Romo should do better:

Driving Romo should be a better experience - the “black screen” bug should happen a lot less often. Please email support@romotive.com if you see it again.

We fixed the “stuck” controls in Telepresence mode. It should work more reliably now. Unfortunately it still works only with an iPhone 4S docked on Romo’s base and a computer running Google Chrome 23+.

Romo runs better on your iPhone 4 and iPod Touch (4th Generation). We reduced the number of processes running in the background on these devices so video/animations and photos shouldn’t crash the app.

We also did some spring cleaning. Here are things we removed because they just weren’t working for you:

We removed “Speed and Trim” from the “Settings” menu. Romo now has some code that helps him automatically adjust speed and turning when you’re driving him on different surfaces.

We removed “Dance Mode” until we can get beat detection just right.

We removed “Creature Mode” but are experimenting with an improved version of face detection technology in the new “Face Follow” mode. Please let us know if that works for you!

Much love -

The Romotive Nerds (+ Romo)

Launching the New Forum

Hi Kickstarters!

First off, we would like to take the time to apologize for the bugs in Romo’s software. We understand that all of these glitches are getting in the way of enjoying and getting to know Romo. As such, we are working to resolve them post haste.

With this in mind, we need your help. Being locked up here in the safety of the Romotive office, we aren’t always aware of what’s going on out there in the real world. We need you to tell us. More than that, we want to encourage all of you to help each other by finding creative workarounds and quick fixes because while we have some ideas, many of you will probably come up with some that would never even cross our minds. We believe that by working together, we can all make Romo a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

So we’ve created a new forum! This is a space where we want you to talk to us and each other about how to make Romo the best little robot he can be. We really hope you all take the time to visit and let us know what's going on!

Jess and the Romotive Nerds

Update #30

A Note from the Software Wizards!

Hey awesome backers -

We have some news! On Thursday, Jess joined the Romotive nerds team. Jess formerly rocked out customer service for Motrr, and she's committed to making sure we get accurate data from you about software and hardware issues, plus connect you with the nerds who can solve any problems you might be having.

She's dedicated full-time to customer service and community relations, and she's already been in touch directly with a few of you. Welcome Jess :).

We're also talking about bringing back a forum based on your advice. This is an issue near+dear to Phu's heart. More info soon.

And we've got an app update that we hope helps fix some issues you've reported. Here's info direct from Adam and the Software team:

Hello Romo Owners -

We're really excited to have released our first update for ROMO3A this Tuesday on the iOS App Store. The new version (2.1) marks a big step for us at Romotive - it allows people to communicate through Romo when they aren't in the same place.

Some highlights from the new Romo software update:

- Telepresence Mode (iPhone 4S only): Allow a friend to remotely control your Romo through their web browser (latest version of Chrome required). Two-way video and audio puts your friend right in front of you!

- Romotions: Check out new Romo emotions, where we combine his animated expressions with corresponding movements. Romo wiggles when he's excited and shudders when he’s scared.Try out different expressions to see how your Romo reacts!

- Romo Rights Himself: If Romo accidentally flips over on his face or back, he'll hop right back onto his treads.

- Speed: Every part of the updated app is way faster, from connecting to your Romo to changing settings. Romo even moves faster too!

But that's not all! We redesigned menus from the ground up and gave Romo a shiny new Vitals screen. In version 2.1, you pull on Romo’s forehead instead of tickling his chin to access his Settings. We’ve removed Manual Trim in the Speed and Turning section under Settings since we fixed that in the app update.

Romo now drives straight across all surfaces (except molten lava and shag carpet). He loves being tickled (but not on his nose), and he might get dizzy if you spin him around too quickly.

We're really pushing the envelope on what Romo can do, and some of our advanced functionality will only run when Romo is using an iPhone 4S.

But don't worry - we'll always release new features that teach every Romo some new tricks, no matter what device he's got plugged in to his rover base. For example, Romo automatically starts out in Creature Mode (which requires a single device) instead of Remote Control Mode (which requires two devices).

Take a closer look at one of the things you can do with just one device - Creature Mode.

We're already pouring through your feedback to improve Romo, and we'll be updating his capabilities at least once a month. We hope you're having fun with your curious new robot pal!

Sincerely,
Adam and the Software Wizards
