Threshold Crossed, NYT Magazine Profiles Nabi Saleh
With 11 days to go, we have crossed the huge landmark goal of $15,000, thanks to one of our most generous supporters who upped her pledge just to nudge us over.
I call your attention to a major story in the New York Times Magazine this Sunday which profiles Nabi Saleh, a village near Ramallah that also figures in "Holy Land" in a big way http://nyti.ms/ZcVn4v. The story mostly focuses on resistance leader Bassem Tamimi, but it's an extensive article that also goes into some detail about Mohammad Tamimi, one of our main subjects.
Mohammad, 24, is the media activist who started the "Tamimi Press," the Facebook page and other social networks that produce a constant flow of news, photos and videos about activities in the village. Mohammad is an activist very much in the spirit of the Arab Spring -- he was influenced by activists in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle, just as he is now followed by the media from around the region.
Mohammad was arrest at the end of last year and spent three months in jail. After he got out, he went to Italy, where he been attending a special program on international law. I have been thrilled to follow his experiences in Rome on Facebook!
On Wednesday President Obama arrives in Israel for his first Presidential trip there. He also visits Ramallah and Joran. This trip, and the attendant spike in media interest about the region, will be the perfect start for our final push, the march to our $20,000 do or die goal. (If we don't make $20,000, we don't keep any of what we've raised).
I haven't wanted to overupdate you, our kind backers You may hear a bit more from me in coming days.
My biggest regret so far is that we haven't gone viral. If there's one thing we need, it's more BUZZ in blogs, twitter feeds and Facebook pages!
I want to share with you some images: some still frames of Mohammad from the film, and below that, an original work of art that Mohammad shared with me. I've been thinking about offering the poster as a Kickstarter reward....
