Over the past few years we have shifted the way we talk about periods. Now it's time to change the way we teach them. That's why we created The Period Game.
The Period Game is a board game about menstruation. It strives to turn a typically uneasy situation into a fun, positive, learning experience. The game teaches participants about what is happening within the body and how to “go with the flow.”
It’s pretty much impossible to play the game without saying words like “period” and “tampon,” making it a lot easier to talk about them in real life.

The goal of The Period Game is to become a Period Pro, and you win by being the first person to make it all the way around the board. The board has 4 different types of spaces, to represent the roughly 4-week cycle that periods occur on: just hanging (you're not always thinking about your period!), ovulation, PMS, and period spaces.
Each turn begins by twisting one of the ovaries to release a marble. A red marble came out? Congrats! You got your period. A clear marble? Move forward one space and play the appropriate card. A purple marble? You leaked! Go to the nurse's office ahead of you and skip your next turn.
On PMS spaces you have to play a PMS card to counteract your symptoms.
On period spaces you have to play the right period protection depending on the type of flow (regular, heavy, or swimming) or go to the nurse's office.
And then there are a bunch of wild cards, because things aren't always as you'd expect!
A 2014 study found that 76% of women ages 16-24 were embarrassed when they learned about menstruation in school, and a little under half didn't know what was happening when they got their first period. We believe the best way to change the period conversation is to improve the way we teach it.
In the years we've spent working on The Period Game, we've seen boys and girls scream "I just want my period" at the top of their lungs, heard every question about menstrual cups, and even taught some forty year old married men a thing or two. We know that this game can help shape the way the next generation talks about menstruation.

Daniela Gilsanz and Ryan Murphy met at RISD where they were both studying Industrial Design—The Period Game was actually borne out of a school project! In the years since then, Daniela and Ryan have spent their free time testing the game in schools, and getting it ready for you.

This is our first game, but we’ve spent years getting ready for it. We’ve talked to game designers, manufacturers and experts in the field to make sure that everything will run as smoothly as possible. Between their experience, and our many many spreadsheets, we are confident that we will be able to successfully produce and deliver this game to you!
