We're starting up a newspaper called 'The Peckham Peculiar' in January 2014 - you should get involved if:
(a) you love newspapers
(b) you want to inspire the local community
(c) you want to be associated with a project that's hyper-local in one of London's most up-and-coming and talked about areas!
We want to write about local news. We want to be free so the whole community can read us. We will be a 16 page newspaper that comes out 6 times a year. The emphasis will be on real reporting and unique stories, not celebrity-led drivel. There will also be a strong focus on design and lots of photographs.
We are a team of four. We are three journalists and one pr and marketing guru. We all work in the magazine and book publishing industries. We are all experienced in writing about local news in London and two of us are published authors who have had a book released in 2012 which became a Sunday Times Top 10 bestselling title. We know exactly what we want to deliver and who we want to help us deliver it. We have already been indundated via twitter and our email account with local writers/bloggers/designers who want to help us deliver this project. We know we can do a great job producing something fun, exciting and very different.
WHAT IS THE £5000 FOR?
We want to do this properly and with great production values. £5,000 is the minimum we need to bring out the first two issues in January and March 2014. The money will cover only the costs of the production and print run. We won’t take any wages from the Kickstarter money. It’s purely to fund the project. Should we surpass this amount, we will invest the additional money in either increased circulation for the first two issues and/or helping produce future issues and keeping the project alive throughout 2014. We would then rely purely on advertising revenue to remain in existence.
We thought about doing this on our own by seeking individual sponsorship and business advertising, but the idea of enlisting community support and bringing the newspaper to life with the help of Kickstarter makes us much more independent from the off. It also shares the ethos of the newspaper - community based and totally independent. We can then pick and choose our advertisers once they have seen the product, and will make sure they share our ideals and values.
WHAT WILL THE NEWSPAPER LOOK LIKE?
We want to be 16 pages - part colour, part black and white. The publication will be bright, lively, well photographed and designed, energetic and well researched with orginal and creative content.
We will deliver the newspaper in time for January 2014.
August and September 2013 - recruit team and research and write the initial stories; start up the Twitter and Tumblr accounts - we have already started the Peckham Peculiar accounts but will do additional accounts in the surrounding areas of Camberwell and Nunhead.
October and November 2013 - edit copy, design the newspaper, photograph the stories.
December 2013 - finalise the design, photography and copy, send to printers and produce the newspaper.
January 2014 - the first edition comes out.
Risks and challenges
No risk. If you support this project and we don't reach our target, no money leaves your account. We will then have to look at alternatives to get the project off the ground..such as individual sponsorship (Jeff Bezos, come on down) and talk to local businesses about advertising from the off. But, to tell you the truth, it really wouldn't be the same without you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
