THANK YOU TO OUR AMAZING BACKERS
Thank you, thank you, thank you. We hate clichés, but we’d be doing you an injustice if we didn’t say that we literally couldn’t do this without you. And yes, we know that is a somewhere between a double and quadruple negative. We don’t care – we’re excited and we freaking love you folks.
This is more than just designing new products to help photographers carry their cameras. This is a way of running a business, and ultimately for the Peak Design team, a way of living our lives. Our Kickstarter backers, many of whom supported us during Capture v1 and Leash/Cuff, make it possible for us to spend our time doing exactly what we want to do: design rad photography gear and enjoy putting it the hands of people who appreciate it. The funds generated from this campaign will support the research, design and development of newer, better solutions to problems that camera owners face. As we do this we will continue to look to you, our most die-hard, passionate supporters, for feedback and direction.
Once again, thank you for your generous support!
QUESTIONS? ANSWERS IN THE FAQ!
Whether you're a new backer or existing backer, we've got a massive (we're talking laughably long) FAQ at the bottom of this page. We bet you'll find you'll find an answer there!
WHAT IS CAPTURE?
We believe Capture is hands-down the best way to carry your camera. The beauty of it lies in its simplicity. Capture is a compact metal clip that lets you carry your camera on any backpack strap, belt or bag. Its unique quick-release system keeps your camera rigidly secure, yet instantly accessible with the click of a button.
Capture frees you from cumbersome camera straps and holsters and lets you go anywhere and do anything with your camera safe and in reach, making sure you never miss another shot. Whew, it feels good just typing that.
Along with Capture v2, we're launching 2 new accessories:
SO WHAT'S NEW IN CAPTURE V2?
Back in 2011, Peak Design launched the original Capture Camera Clip right here on Kickstarter. We’ve spent the past 2 years building our team and reinventing our solution from the ground up, incorporating feedback from our thousands of awesome backers and customers. Here's a high level look at what is new in v2...
To walk you though the big new things one by one...
- There's a Standard and Pro version now: Hobbyists and beginners have different needs than serious pros and adventurers, hence 2 versions of our clip. Read the "Capture vs. CapturePRO" section below to learn more.
- Beautiful new ergonomic shape: The new Capture looks sleek and stunning - but the new shape is more than just eye-candy. We’ve redesigned it to give you total comfort no matter where on your body you wear it. We also redesigned the clamping bolts to make them easier to screw down, even if you’re wearing gloves.
- Lighter and slimmer: We’ve trimmed the fat, making our (already compact) product lighter, slimmer and more unobtrusive. See FAQ for size specs.
- Better security features: We created 2 new secondary locking systems to give you more security options. A safety lock has been added to the quick-release button, giving you a quick and easy way to prevent accidental release. For maximum security, the all-new twist lock tightly clamps your camera in. The new twist lock also stabilizes your camera if you’re using Capture as a tripod clamp. Wait - did we just say you can use it as a tripod clamp?
- That’s right, it works as a tripod clamp too (PRO): CapturePRO has a ¼” tripod mounting hole in it’s back plate. This means you can put it atop your tripod or monopod and have a fully functioning quick-release clamp for your camera.
- Works with more tripod heads (PRO): CapturePRO comes with one of our three PROplates. These plates offer compatibility with more tripod heads (ARCA and Manfrotto RC2) and camera types (SLR and Compact Mirrorless). See the FAQ for info on choosing a plate.
- Works with sling straps (PRO): Capture, equipped with the standard plate, is designed to work with Leash and Cuff using our micro-anchor attachment system (see FAQ). CapturePRO, equipped with one of our PROplates, works with Peak Design straps as well as classic sling-style straps made by companies like BlackRapid®. PROplates feature a special load-bearing D-ring that lets you attach your sling strap directly to your camera when you’re not using Capture.
CAPTURE VS. CAPTURE PRO
Here's a look at Capture, CapturePRO, and the different quick-release plates that you can get with them:
WHAT CAN I GET BY SUPPORTING THIS PROJECT?
If you to like go places and do things with your camera, you'll get a big fat treat. In addition to Capture v2, we've got some amazing new accessories. Behold:
Capture®: The standard entry-level version of Capture has a glass-reinforced nylon backplate and comes with our standard quick release plate (see FAQ for details). Pre-order at the $50 reward level.
CapturePRO®: Our flagship professional version of Capture features an all-aluminum body and comes with one of 3 PROplates. It can be used as a tripod head and is compatible with multiple tripod systems, as well as sling straps and hand straps (see FAQ for details). Pre-order at the $65+ levels. Also, note the limited "Naked Edition" early bird specials!
PROpad™: This accessory (for all versions of Capture including v1) provides additional support and padding for folks who want to use Capture with heavy camera/lens/battery grip combinations, or those who are just looking for maximum comfort. Projected delivery in September. Included at the $95+ levels, or you can order it "a la carte" for $20 by selecting the $1+ reward. This may seem obvious, but note that the PROpad is only useful if you have Capture.
POV Kit: We formerly called this the "GoPro® Mount," but we've renamed it because it we've broadened it's capabilities. This accessory lets you use Capture as a rigid, positionable video-capture mount for your GoPro®, or other brand POV camera, or your point-and-shoot camera. This means you can take POV video from any backpack strap, belt or strap-like object. The GoPro® Mount is best suited for Capture v2, but works with v1 too. Projected delivery in October. Included at the $95+ levels (except the Early Bird Special).
Leash & Cuff (not pictured above): Leash is our quick-connecting, uber-versatile camera strap. Cuff is our quick-connecting minimalist wrist strap. We launched these straps on Kickstarter in 2012. Included at the $150+ levels.
WHAT ARE THE REWARD LEVELS?
We would love your support, and created reward levels based on what we think you'd love to get in return for your generosity. See the FAQs for information on adding individual products to your reward a la carte.
PROPAD: USING CAPTURE WITH BIG OL' CAMERAS
Got a heavy camera/lens/battery combo? Watch this video to see how PROpad™ + Capture is the ultimate carrying solution for you:
Based on feedback from our customers with super-sized rigs, we’ve developed a supportive pad accessory that makes Capture an ideal solution for even the bulkiest of cameras. We call it the PROpad™, and whether you have a large camera/lens/grip or you just want extra comfort when carrying your gear all day, this is the accessory for you.
PROpad™ allows you to side-load or top-load your camera into Capture when you wear it on your belt, and it can be worn on your backpack strap as well. PROpad™ is constructed from super-tough Hypalon and has a gel-like compression-molded EVA foam back pad. We expect PROpad™ to be ready to ship by September.
POV KIT: USING CAPTURE WITH GOPRO & POINT-AND-SHOOTS
Want to know what the POV Kit is all about? First, watch this video.
If you can attach a DSLR to any strap or belt, then why the heck shouldn’t you be able to do that with a POV video camera? Well, we’ve got good news for you. Soon, you’ll be able to use Capture (any version) to mount your GoPro® camera directly to any backpack strap, belt, or strap-like substrate to capture point-of-view video in exciting new ways. This accessory will also let you take POV video using other brand POV cameras, as well as point-and-shoot cameras. We plan on having it ready to ship by the beginning of October.
We care immensely about the quality of our products. 8 different materials go through 15 different transformation processes to produce 26 different parts for Capture v2.
This video gives some insight into how these raw materials are processed and assembled to become Capture. It also shows how closely we work with our manufacturing team in Wuxi, China to bring Capture to life. We filmed all of the footage in this video during a recent week-long trip to Wuxi to hash out our final production process for Capture v2, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed filming it.
REWARD FULFILLMENT, SHIPPING, AND TIMING
When this campaign ends on August 23rd, all backers will get a survey sent via email. We'll ask you to provide your shipping address, and you'll also specify which quick-release plate you want (if you pre-ordered CapturePRO®) and which items you want from the a-la-carte menu. Until then we don't need any shipping info from you - so just sit back and relax. You deserve it!
We have every intention of shipping Capture® and CapturePRO® starting shortly after our funding campaign ends, no foolin'. That means most of you will be receiving your rewards in the month of September, international backers maybe early October. Leash™ and Cuff™ will also be shipping immediately after the campaign ends.
The PROpad™ and POV Kit might take a little longer to ship. We're still finalizing our supply chain for those products. We don't want to hold up shipping of Capture, so for that reason these accessories may ship separately. So you might get your rewards in 2 shipments. We won't make you wait too long though - we should have them ready to go in October.
If you've chosen one of our limited Naked Edition early bird rewards, your CapturePRO Naked Edition units, your reward should be on it's way! If you haven't gotten a shipping notification from us, please check your Kickstarter messages immediately.
We kindly ask international backers to add a single $15 amount to their pledge to cover shipping. If you have questions about international shipping, please see our FAQ.
Risks and challenges
Supply Chain Risks
Holy smokes, have we learned a thing or two about our supply chain over the last two years! One of the main ingredients in making Capture V2 an outstanding product was improving our supply chain by selecting the right manufacturers, the right materials and the right processes. We can't even begin to convey how monumental of a task this has been, but the short and sweet answer is that it's paid off - we have a high-quality product, and we have a much higher confidence in our ability to build lots of them, and do it on time. But, things can still go awry. A supplier may slip a deadline or their machines might break down or they might run out of a certain type of paint. Those things would delay fulfillment.
Design Risks for Future Products
PROpad™ and the GoPro® Mount are not quite as far along as Capture V2. PROpad™ has a complete design but we still need to create packaging for it. the GoPro™ Mount is getting a couple small tweaks to the final prototype. We anticipate these products being ready in September, but it could take a bit longer if we have to do any major redesign work. Highly unlikely though.
Acts of God
We're based in San Francisco. That means we could have an earthquake. Or we could have a massive spur-of-the-moment parade involving wacky costumes and public nudity. Or, God forbid, the Dodgers could come to town. Whatever happens, we'll get through it together. We promise.
What if I just want one item that's not a reward? Or I want to add an item to a reward? Is there an a la carte menu?
This is the most commonly asked question in our campaign. Please read below for instructions.
Maybe you want an extra quick-release plate to use Capture with a 2nd camera. Or maybe you want two Captures. Heck, maybe you want 5. We've created an a-la-carte menu, so you can add extra of anything onto your pre-order. Simply choose the reward that you want, and add the appropriate dollar amount to your pledge for any extras.
OR...if you simply want the PROpad, or the GoPro Mount, or you prefer to build your own order from scratch, simply choose the $1 reward and then pledge the amount that your order equals according to the amounts below. Please don't forget int'l shipping if you're outside the US.
ALSO...IMPORTANT: Note that when you are choosing to add items "a la carte", you will not be able to "choose" them in the rewards page. You will simply enter a dollar amount, and at the END of the funding period, you will receive a survey which asks you to clarify which products you have ordered. We apologize, but this is the only way to complete such an order on Kickstarter.
POV Kit: $20
PROplate Quick Release Plates:
DUALplate (just the plate): $30
ARCAplate (just the plate): $30
MICROplate (just the plate): $30
Standard Quick Release Plate (just the plate): $20
4-Pack of extra Anchors: $10
Capture comes with a plate we call the "Standard Plate." CapturePRO comes with a plate we call a "PROplate."
The Standard Plate is die-cast aluminum and compatible with ARCA® tripod heads (see the FAQ about tripod compatibility if you have questions).
If you get a reward that includes CapturePRO, your clip will include 1 of our 3 PROplates. You will choose which plate you get. And you won't actually make that choice until our funding campaign is over and we send out our shipping survey.
First, you should know that our PROplates are awesome. Unlike the die-cast, powdercoated aluminum plate that comes with basic Capture, the PROplates are machined and anodized aluminum. They are super smooth and glide in and out of CapturePRO like butter. They feature a D-ring connection screw that is load-bearing, meaning you can hook your camera up to your sling strap (like Leash or BlackRapid brand straps) when you're not using your clip. PROplates also have hand strap loops so you can use a hand strap even when you're using CapturePRO.
So, which plate should you choose? Ask yourself these questions:
1. Do you use a Manfrotto® RC2 tripod head? If yes, get CapturePRO with the DUALplate. DUALplate works in both Manfrotto® RC2 tripods and Arca® tripods. It engages in Capture in 2 directions.
2. Do you plan on using CapturePRO mostly with a compact-mirrorless camera? If yes, get CapturePRO with the MICROplate. MICROplate is a slimmer plate that fits nicely beneath slim-body cameras. MICROplate works with Arca® tripods and engages in Capture in 2 directions.
3. If you answered no to 1 and 2, get CapturePRO with the ARCAplate. ARCAplate works with ARCA® tripods. The beauty of ARCAplate is that it engages in Capture in 4 directions, meaning you can remove your camera and re-insert it at a 90-degree angle for quick lens changes.
First off, remember that in order to receive your unit you must fill out the shipping information survey sent to you through Kickstarter. Please try to be as accurate and thorough as possible - that will help us fulfill your order quickly and correctly.
Secondly, be assured that your items are being shipped as soon as humanly (and machinely) possible. Orders from Kickstarter backers are our top priority and will be entirely fulfilled before any retail or wholesale orders are processed. That said, we have a very complex fulfillment process ahead of us – over 7000 orders, all of them for different combinations of items, and all being processed at the same time. We also have a very tight production schedule – manufacturing started at the end of August, and as always there have been procedural kinks that need to be worked out before we can reach maximum output and efficiency. Long story short, we assure you that everybody at Peak Design is working as hard as they can to fulfill these orders, and we appreciate your patience and support while we do it.
So, our best estimates on delivery are as follows:
A vast majority of orders will ship in the middle of September. If things go flawless, they might ship earlier. If things go pear-shaped, they might take a week or two longer. That means most of you will receive your items in September, maybe early October if you are international. Note that with international shipments, delivery times can vary from 6 days to 3 weeks.
If you ordered the POV Kit, you’ll most likely have that sent to you separately. Don’t worry, you won’t be charged an additional fee (we’ll see if USPS makes us eat our collars on that one ☺). As stated on our project page, that product is expected to ship in October.
If your pledge was declined just login to Kickstarter and click the “Action Needed” system message on the top of your screen. It will redirect you to Amazon, where you can change your payment method. Don't delay, however: backers only have seven days to correct payment issues before they are dropped from the project (and therefore no longer eligible to receive rewards).
If you're in the US, we'll be shipping your package out of the San Francisco office. We'll have about 4500 of these to get through, and we have to pick and choose the order in which they're sent based on a number of factors which we can't necessarily control. Please know that we're trying to get all shipments out as soon as possible.
Your domestic shipments will be sent via USPS First Class Mail, or in the case of packages that exceed 13 oz., Priority Mail. Both will have tracking information that will work within the US. However, note that when we hit "print" on the label, an email is sent to you. It often takes one full day until your package goes through a meaningful scan. So, please refrain from asking us about tracking information until there is a problem that hasn't resolved itself after a few days' time. Thanks!
International packages will be sent to various countries via one of three Shipwire warehouses located in London, Hong Kong, and Toronto. In order to save our backers costly duties and taxes, Peak Design is going to be importing all of our products into these countries prior to shipping them to you. This means that your shipments:
1. Won't require taxes or duties in the EU or most Asian nations
2. May have tracking, but may not (depending on the particular post service, of which there will be too many used to name). Most commonly for EU and Asian backers, Royal Mail International or Hong Kong Post will be used.
3. Should arrive much quicker than if it were shipped from the San Francisco office.
We hope this makes for a much smoother fulfillment process than other KS projects in the past.
In short, yes it will. And if you're asking this question, we recommend you choose one of the funding levels that includes the PROpad. But first, you should know...
Capture and CapturePRO can both hold over 200lbs, so there's never a question about your camera's security. Your pants will fall down or your shoulder will get ripped off before your camera falls out of Capture. We hope that doesn't happen to you, by the way.
With heavy rigs, or cameras with battery grips that offset the center of gravity, what you should think about is comfort. And your comfort depends on how stable/sturdy your belt or strap is. If you're clamping Capture on a thick men's leather belt or a heavy-duty multi-day trekking backpack, you'll be good to go with even the heaviest of gear. If you have lighter, flimsier straps, then your gear won't be held as rigidly against your body.
Now, back to the PROpad. We created this accessory specifically for people with really large cameras, heavy lenses and/or battery grips. It's a semi-rigid pad that sits between your body and Capture, providing comfort and stability. It can be worn on the belt or on your backpack shoulder strap. If you have a full-frame DSLR and other hefty gear, we highly recommend this accessory.
All versions of Capture (including v1) work with most Arca® style tripod quick-release heads. This means you can take your camera out of Capture and put it directly into your tripod quick-release clamp with out removing the Capture plate from your camera.
If you use a Manfrotto® RC2 tripod, then you should get CapturePRO. CapturePRO can be ordered with a plate (DUALplate) that is compatible with Manfrotto® RC2 tripod heads AND Arca® heads.
Manfrotto® RC2 tripod heads are only made by the Manfrotto® brand. Arca® style tripod heads are made by hundreds of brands, including the following makes and models...
3 Legged Thing – most models (www.3leggedthing.com)
Acratech – all knob-clamp models (acratech.net)
Benro – B-series ballheads (www.benrousa.com)
Desmond – DAC-1 tripod head (buy it on Amazon)
Feisol – all CB-series ballheads (www.feisol.com)
Horusbennu – most models (www.horusbennu.com – in Korean)
Jobu Design – most gimbals and quick release heads (www.jobu-design.com)
Joby – Gorillapod Ballhead X (www.joby.com)
Kirk – all tripod and monopod head models (www.kirkphoto.com)
Markins – Q-Ball knob release heads (www.markinsamerica.com or www.markins.com)
Really Right Stuff – all screw knob quick release clamps and lever quick release clamps (reallyrightstuff.com)
Sirui – all ball head models (www.siruicanada.com)
Wimberly – most heads and QR clamps (www.tripodhead.com)
But wait...I have a Gitzo, Velbon, Vanguard, or other brand of Tripod that isn't Arca or Manfrotto RC2 compatible. What should I do?
While we wish we could make plates that work for everyone's tripods, we simply can't, in some cases due to physical geometry problems, and in some cases because we simply can't manage that many different products.
So...here is what we suggest. If you do not have a Manfrotto RC2 tripod, then you should get the ARCAplate. If you still want to be able to go directly from your Capture to a tripod, you can either:
1. Replace your current tripod clamp (these are modular and removable) with one like this, from Desmond: http://www.amazon.com/camera-photo/dp/B005ZLOW8K
2. Better yet, get yourself 2 Capture PROs, so you can use one of them as your tripod clamp. We used them this way for shooting all the video that you've seen in our campaign.
Capture and CapturePRO let you carry your camera on ANY belt or strap. This includes backpacks (both big and small), waist belts, messenger bags, life vests, climbing harnesses, fishing vests, professional camera belts (like those made by ThinkTank) and just about anything else you can think of that has straps on it.
In terms of size, Capture and CapturePRO both work with any belt or strap up to (and even slightly over) 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide and 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) thick.
Got a really uber-thick strap? Don't worry - we'll soon be selling a set of longer clamping bolts for Capture that increase the thickness of strap you can attach to. Stay tuned for a project update on that.
In order to use your camera with Capture, you must have Capture’s quick release plate attached somewhere on your camera. Some L-brackets have auxiliary tripod mounts that might allow you to attach Capture’s quick release plate and still keep your L-bracket handy. Depending on the size and weight of your camera and L-bracket, this may be workable solution for you.
All of our products are made in Wuxi, China. We have a very close relationship with our manufacturing partner there, and we have been nothing but impressed with their quality, professionalism and enthusiasm. We'll be visiting them during this campaign to work on final assembly and quality assurance processes.
Peak Design is headquartered in San Francisco, where all of our product design, prototyping and testing is done.
Yes. Capture v2 uses the same quick release geometry as Capture v1, meaning that the quick-release plates from each model are cross-compatible.
Note that just about every other part of v2 is different from v1. This means that v2 clamping bolts will not fit in v1, the backplates cannot be switched, nor can the twist locks, quick-release buttons, or any other moving part.
Leash and Cuff are two innovative camera straps that we launched on Kickstarter in November 2012.
Leash is a super-versatile, quick-connecting camera strap that can be used as a neck strap, sling strap, camera safety tether, video stabilizer, monopod and more.
Cuff is a quick-connecting, minimalist wrist strap that can actually be worn as a bracelet on your wrist when you're not using it.
Leash and Cuff feature something we call the "micro-anchor connection system," which is something that we're currently patenting. It's stronger and faster than any other camera strap quick connection system out there.
Capture's quick release plate (the standard plate) has 4 loops in it that act as connection points for micro-anchors. This means you can use Leash and Cuff with your camera even when you're using Capture.
CapturePRO's quick release plates (the PROplates) have strap loops on them that allow you to connect micro-anchors, as well as hand straps. The PROplates also have a D-ring that lets you connect sling straps like those made by BlackRapid®.
Capture v1 was and still is a fantastic product. But with v2, we've gone and made every single little part of it better than before. For that reason, v1 will be phased out.
You can still buy v1 from our website and from our retailers' websites while supplies last. And believe us when we say they're running out fast.
If you own a v1 unit you'll still have a lifetime guarantee, meaning you'll be able to get repairs and replacement parts whenever necessary.
As noted in our rewards, please add $15 to your pledge for international shipping. If you're adding other things to your reward from the a-la-carte menu, you do not have to add an additional shipping fee. Just one $15 shipping amount.
We will ship international rewards at the same time we ship domestic rewards. See the "Reward Fulfillment and Shipping" section above for a quick run-down on how and when things will be shipped.
We plan to ship international rewards from 2 new warehouses we're setting up - one in Canada and one in the UK. This will allow us to fulfill these rewards more efficiently and quickly than shipping them all the way from the US. It will also reduce the duties/taxes that you may have to pay to receive the packages.
Unfortunately we cannot expedite any of our shipments - international or domestic. But, because we have new global warehouses setup, we expect shipping times for most international backers to be pretty quick.
Since the beginning of Peak Design, we've guaranteed all of our products for life. If anything ever gets broken or messed up, we'll fix or replace it for free. That really puts the pressure on us to design and build products that can stand the tests of time, heavy use and harsh conditions. But hey, we're 2 years and 50,000 customers deep and we're still in business, so that should give you some assurance that we're not over-promising.
Please note that our warranty does not cover damage to your gear, yourself or anybody around you. It was hard enough getting our lawyer to be okay with our warranty as-is. So please be careful and cognizant of what you're doing out there.
The CapturePRO body weighs 110g. Standard Capture weighs 100g. Capture v1's body weighed 120g.
In addition to the body of the clip, there is the quick release plate that sits on your camera. Here are the weights for those:
PROplates (CapturePRO comes with one of these):
Standard Plate: 22g (Capture comes with this)
We hope to be ready to fulfill wholesale orders when this funding campaign is complete. Please contact the Peak Design team if you are interested in becoming a distributor or retailer. You can email us at email@example.com.
What if I want to add a la carte items or otherwise change my pledge after I've already initially pledge?
It's easy! If you're already a backer, then the green button at the top of this page (the v2 Kickstarter Main Page) will say "Manage My Pledge" instead of "Back This Project". Go to Manage My Pledge, and you can adjust however you need to.
If your pledge was declined just login to Kickstarter and click the “Action Needed” system message on the top of your screen. It will redirect you to Amazon, where you can change your payment method. Don't delay, however: backers have seven days to correct payment issues before they are dropped from the project (and therefore no longer eligible to receive rewards).
My shipping address will be changing in September or October. What address should I give you in my survey?
This is a tough scenario for us to handle – we need to get your shipping info as soon as possible so that we can prepare and the 7000+ orders that need to go out. But most shipments will not be in the mail until a couple weeks after you give us your details. When in doubt, please give us a shipping address that will still be valid through the months of September and October. If you’re moving soon, give us your new address, or the address of a close friend or relative.
If you gave us the wrong address, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as you can with the right one. Please include your Kickstarter profile name and the reward you chose so we know exactly who you are.
I'm international or Canadian, and added items to my reward a-la-carte. Do I have to pay the extra $15 fee for each item, or just once?
Just once, no matter how many extra things you ordered.
International shipments will have commercial invoices and all necessary customs paperwork as required by law. Law also places restrictions around labeling and valuing parcels being sent abroad. We will foremost be abiding by those laws, and secondly doing what we can to minimize the customs fees and hassles that you will incur.
We unfortunately cannot single out specific shipments and change the customs info.
I need to adjust my pledge to add an international shipping fee or an a-la-carte item. How do I do that?
You cannot augment your pledge on Kickstarter after the August 23 funding deadline.
If you forgot to add a shipping fee or an extra amount for an a la carte purchase, you can pay the fee directly to the Peak Design Ltd. Paypal account, under the email address email@example.com. When you submit that payment, BE SURE to add a message that includes your Kickstarter profile name. Otherwise we will not know which pledge it belongs to.
