About this project
As Seen In:
This new concept for commuting by bicycle combines the best of both worlds, the upright position and full protection from the elements found in a classic Dutch-style urban commuter and the comfort ride of a typical American beach cruiser, to let you do both in style - commute and cruise.
The Dreamer comes with a fast 7-speed transmission and pot-hole friendly balloon tires. A perfectly designed hi-tensile steel frame, spring-loaded saddle and a riser handlebar add to the comfort and assure an upright position. Also, riding uphill is not a problem since we use V-brakes (not coaster brakes).
Modeled after the classic Dutch bike, the Dreamer Step-thru features modern styling, up-right seating position, and comes fully equipped. Choose from 4 head turning colors.
For a sportier, aggressive look, we made the Dreamer Straight-bar which features modern styling, upright seating position, and comes fully equipped. A vintage-style string spoke guard adds that vintage look. Choose from 2 classic bold colors.
With our introduction of the Dreamer model, we hope to push the biking chic movement and support the development of sustainable transportation. To learn more about our socially responsible business model, please visit www.peacebicycles.com.
To save you shopping time and to allow you to ride at night right out of the box, the Dreamer comes standard fully loaded with clothing protection accessories (fenders, chain guard, plastic spoke guard on step-thru or string vintage spoke guard on straight bar model), safety features (battery-powered front and rear lights) and utility features (Chrome-plated steel rear rack with spring clip, tool pouch hinges on the saddle).
We've incorporated every bike guard standard in our bikes (as shown above) so you can enjoy riding in the clothes you desire at the moment, ride in style and be present on the street, and even show off in your best outfit if you'd like. Your dress won't get into spokes or chain, your corporate suite won't get dirty, and you'll be protected from the elements.
After listening to your demands, we decided to make battery-powered front and rear LED lights standard. (Most bikes come with the industry standard spoke reflectors only.) We realize that a big barrier to entry for people into biking is safety - so we made it a point to increase bike visibility at night at all costs.
Our pedals, which also feature reflectors, have rubber pads so you won't slip and damage your fancy shoes and are able to ride barefoot. Each bike also comes with reflective strips on the tires, and a Peace Bicycles Bell standard.
Peace Bicycles owe their high-end look to several features that we've designed and prototyped to perfection including our: 3d metal head-badges, 3-coat paint with one clear coat, well-polished welding joints, Chrome-plated steel rack, and custom-shaped full chain guard. The string spoke guard on the straight-bar model gives it that high-end vintage look. And, the perfect geometry of the step-thru frame makes it one of the most beautiful vintage commuter bicycles out there. Plus, the trendy colors and color-matching saddle and grips, carefully chosen by our designers, add to a classic high-end look. Dreamers give you the style and quality of much more expensive bikes for less.

The Dreamer is ready to carry a load, and with today's great choice of baskets, you can go more traditional ...
... or more contemporary...
Our bikes weigh 34 lbs (with rear rack included) which is lighter than most true Dutch-style fully loaded bicycles. We've achieved a significant weight reduction by removing the logs that are traditionally used in Dutch bikes, and by using alloy parts where possible without sacrificing quality or style. We still managed to keep weight under control, even with the balloon tires being heavier than the regular tires.
The Dreamer is for everyone. From the urban commuter to the beach lover, from the hipster to the business professional, from the young to the old and everyone in between. That's the cool thing about our Dreamer, it doesn't discriminate.
The Peace Dreamer is the perfect bike to start incorporating biking into your everyday life. Biking makes you healthier and lets you connect with the outside world. You can smell the air, you can hear the birds sing, and you can talk to people. A more active, healthier and sociable life style will make you happier. Also, our bikes feature an upright seating position which will save your back, wrist, neck etc. and prolong your ride.
Ride in a suit. Ride in a long dress. Ride to the beach. Ride to work. Ride in comfort. Ride in style. Be present. Be happy.
Where would you like to go?
... to a coffee shop?
... to your yoga class?
... or straight to the beach?
... even barefoot?
Each box will come with your bike 95% assembled, a user manual/ assembly instructions, tools for assembly, and touch-up paint. There also will be an assembly movie available on the Peace Bicycles website. Assembly is easy, but if you prefer not to do it yourself we can ship it to a nearby bike shop.
Biking was always in the blood. Ever since I was a child it was an escape and even as I grew up it still holds the same allure. Many trips to Amsterdam, and finally Florida, where I biked daily with my girlfriend, reignited the understanding that I was very happy commuting by bicycle. The added daily exercise, the wind in my hair and the rewarding feeling afterwards made my life more complete. Later, when I went to look for a suitable bike, I found that there was no middle ground for style, comfort, utility and speed. Bikes were either fast but uncomfortable, stylish but expensive, comfortable but locking in features and slow, and so a need for a combination of it all arose. Together with our bike-passionate team, we set out to create the ultimate commuter bike." - Ilya Pikus, founder.
To create such a bike, we researched the concerns of the bike-commuting community that weren't being addressed with the current market offering including lack of standard features, colors, and comfort. Then we designed our bicycle to satisfy those shortcomings. And that's how the fully-loaded concept was conceived.
We also found the market either had really cheap bikes or well over $1000 boutique bikes to offer. There also weren't a lot of colors to choose from. We felt undeserved! Sure we could get a fixie in any color we wanted to, but the same didn't apply to our beloved Dutch style city bike.
"Now we need to make a transition into quality and affordable commuters with a selection of beautiful colors that let you ride in style, speedy, and enjoy every moment of it while looking fashionable."
We realized there was a niche in the market, and it was our calling to fulfill it. And out of this conversation Peace Bicycles was born.
Peace Bicycles eCommerce is about to start taking orders ...
We were looking to start a business that is responsible and environmentally friendly, and one night the idea sparked at the kitchen table when I saw a picture of a bike and wrote "Peace Bicycles" on it. We immediately checked for and started our trademark application, and never looked back.
Once we had the name the next question was what type of bicycle would it be? We studied the market and noticed that everyone was developing fixies, we wanted something different, suitable for people of all ages, a versatile design good for recreation, utility and fashion, a bike ready to be accessorized. We were looking at the European Dutch-style bike designs that we found to be the most suitable to satisfy all of our desires, and finally, a photograph that we brought back from our last trip to Europe (Amsterdam) hit the last nail - we just loved the accessorizing aspect of the Dutch bikes. Later, we also fell in love with the balloon tires as we've realized that they offer greater comfort and trendy colors, and so a complete design idea of a fully-accessorized comfort commuter cruiser was born.
Our first bike prototype was created quickly but was a quality-disaster as a product, and we learned a lot from it. Over the course of the 2 years we spent designing and prototyping, we visited several manufacturers and finally picked the best.
Not satisfied with the initial prototypes and thriving to achieve a perfect frame design (strong, light, comfortable, and with the most elegant curvature), we took the frame through five prototypes (our final frame design is very different from the original). The unique full chain-guard design took two prototypes, in order to make it go around the derailleur, to achieve maximum protection. Creating the Peace Bicycles brand identity - the metal headbadge - took three different molds/technologies and prototypes, and the final result is a beautiful 3d interpretation that is sure to be appreciated by our style-conscious backers.
It's important to note that we've also modified the common fork design, in order to assure an easier assembly. We believe, our customers will notice how easy it is to attach the front fender and the front light by the means of two separate screws vs. mounting them using one continuous screw as done on most of today's bikes.
We worked hard to achieve the fully loaded and ergonomically sound design while keeping the costs down - prototyping the custom spoke-guards and handlebar, picking and testing colors, finding the right saddle, grips and lights, and also designing the rear rack - all took significant time and effort of the entire team.
And finally, we've taken care of minimizing the weight of the bike by carefully choosing the right materials while retaining its cycle-chic looks.
We're very satisfied with the final result - it's a beautiful bicycle. If you love what you see, please become our backers and spread the word about the Peace Bicycles brand. The peace deserves the best!
These images below highlight some moments of our exiting story:
In two years time, we perfected the frame designs, completed three rounds of prototypes, designed and finalized a custom chain guard, and finalized all standard accessories.
Looking for Utility Bike Storage?
Check Out our Friends at Fietsklik
Fietsklik allows you to carry more with your bike, even a case of beer. They are detachable and lockable and perfect for shopping, commuting and carrying your kid on the back. Their quality products are also available on Kickstarter and compliment our bikes perfectly!
The final production models will have the following slight improvements which are different from what you see in the current images:
- Replaced double kickstand and wheel stabilizer which work as a pair with just a single kickstand which is lighter and folds away more neatly.
- Added rear battery LED flashing light that will replace the current reflector and add to night time safety.
- Removed the quick releases on seat and front wheel because of theft concerns.
- The current brakes will be replaced with V-brakes which allow for easier assembly and calibration.
Risks and challenges
Since we've had a 2-year long relationship with our established manufacturer and have completed 3 rounds of prototypes with them, they are standing by ready to fulfill our first order. While building prototypes, we've learned that some manufacturers can delay deliveries of certain parts depending on current demand and so we'll be ordering those parts in advance. Our manufacturer has proven to deliver multiple prototypes in a timely manner so we do not expect any delays in terms of welding, painting, assembly, quality control, etc.. We will strive to get your bikes to you by the promised date.
As for producing some custom parts (head-badges, chain-guards, engraved saddles and bells), the necessary stamps and molds have already been made, so there should be no delay.
There should be no challenges in fulfilling all other rewards. We have t-shirts, posters and postcards designs ready and they will be fulfilled on schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
