The Larklamp Game Lantern™ is a tabletop game system. Game boards made of shadows are cast from patterns cut into the lantern’s removable side-panels.
Each Larklamp system comes bundled with the game Snyxtrap.
Like cartridges in a videogame console, different games can be loaded into the patent-pending Larklamp by switching out the lantern's panels.
A variety of new games will be developed and released every year for the Larklamp, and they will be available for purchase online.
These games will all feature unique play mechanics which take advantage of the Larklamp's distinct ability to "project" game boards made of shadows and light.
You can peek at an early set of rules for the Larklamp game Glimmermill, which was recently featured at the London Game Festival's Now Play This exhibition.
Each Larklamp Game Lantern reward includes one free copy of the Larklamp game Snyxtrap – a jury-selected participant in the Indie Megabooth festival at PAX East 2016.
Snyx are mischievous faeries from the ethereal realm of the Shadowfay, and one is loose inside your home!
- Maneuver the snyx on a board cast entirely of shadow and light
- Play your hand of magical lures and traps against the other hunters
- Be the first to capture the snyx inside the lantern to win
The above video is an overview of the Snyxtrap gameplay. Most games of Snyxtrap play about twice as long as the one in this video (or longer) – but we kept it quick for an introduction.
As the pledge total increases above our goal, there is the chance to unlock new free stuff for backers. Each time we reach a target value, a stretch goal will unlock – awarding new items for you, and revealing the target for the following goal.
✓ $5000 Snyx Papercraft & Blank Did you know that snyx come in many appearances? I will create and share a special snyx papercraft PDF that you can print and cut out. It will be almost visually identical to the game piece. There will also be a “Blank” version for you to customize and decorate anyway you imagine! (available to all backers this summer)
✓ $9,000 FREE LARKLAMP GAMES! There will be premium, high quality Print-and-Play (PnP) “release versions” of Larklamp games for sale on the website when the lantern is released. These PDF's will be available for sale in addition to the physical, boxed versions of the games.
If this goal is unlocked, every Larklamp backer will now receive all premium Larklamp PnP games free of charge (forever!) when they are published.
✓ $14,000 Second Snyx Game Piece Snyx are pesky, but they can be really captivating. I will design and create a new, second snyx game-piece that will be included with your copy of Snyxtrap.
✓ $20,000 Larklamp Home Panels I will design and build you a set of four Larklamp "home panels" that will now be included with your Larklamp Game Lantern. These panels will cast beautiful shadow patterns while your other Larklamp game panels are safely stored away in their respective boxes.
✓ $27,000 Snyxtrap Story Panels - I will create a set of four new "story panels" that will be added to your copy Snyxtrap. These panels will cast an introductory shadow tale about the snyx to set up the game. In addition to adding a beautiful visual introduction to the game, the panels also offer the added gameplay feature as a functional scoreboard when playing a series of Snyxtrap games.
☞ $35,000 A Second Larklamp Game - The Cave (Note: This is a significant upgrade to the Larklamp Home Panels stretch-goal above)
You will now receive two Larklamp games with your Larklamp rewards- Snyxtrap and The Cave! In addition to your Larklamp’s four home panels casting beautiful shadow patterns, I will now spend a great deal more time on these panels to ALSO encode a small new Larklamp game within their ornamental designs.
Codenamed The Cave, this game project will be based on the theme of Plato's Allegory of the Cave – a philosophical inspiration for the Larklamp.
When the Larklamp rewards ship, I will post PDF templates to download so you can try your hand at creating your own Larklamp games! A variety of tips & tricks on making your own games will also be covered in the Art of Larklamp eBook.
Note on the Seal of Grandlark Reward:
If you are considering pledging at the Grandlark level, I strongly urge you to first read more about it here to get a better sense of the purpose and intention behind this very unique reward.
Money-Back Guarantee Offer: If you are not satisfied with your Larklamp Game Lantern reward for any reason, you may return your reward for a full refund of your pledge amount within the first 30 days of receiving it.
The Larklamp Needs You: I’ve invested a year into developing both the Larklamp and Snyxtrap. However I need your support to complete the last bit of development and move into the production phase.
- Larklamp and its games are made in Canada/USA!
- You are interested in being a part of a new gaming experiment from the very start – watching it grow and evolve over the coming years and decades
- You are perhaps a vampire and wish to finally own a game system that reflects (!) your sense of mystery, playfulness, and love of the dark (and which is also forwards-compatible – so you can keep playing it for hundreds of years! Although the LED is rated for about 20,000 hours, so you may need to replace the bulb in ~200-300 years)
I am! I have been involved in helping to produce and ship around twenty commercial videogames over the past fifteen years at Lucas, Double Fine, Ubisoft, and Hololabs studios. I worked both as a designer on big AAA projects and as CEO and Creative Director running a small studio. I have also produced several award-winning physical art installations, and I am putting everything I have learned from my experience into this project.
ARTIST-MADE: The Larklamp and its games are a personal expression of what games mean to me as a designer and artist. I want to maintain this "craftsmanship" approach by working on every aspect of the process.
This project was designed to allow me to complete all the production myself (with the help of studio assistants), using a combination of my own laser-cutter and plotter machines (my new laser-cutter has already been ordered and will be arriving at my studio this summer!).
While I may work independently, I do not work alone!
I have had assistance with the Snyxtrap game design, and someone helping me with day-to-day studio tasks. My many friends and colleagues in the Montreal indie games community have also been extremely supportive and, of course, I hope that you will be joining me soon on this adventure as well!
Fulfillment is important to me. I want you to enjoy your Larklamp as soon as possible, while keeping its construction up to the high standards I expect for all my creations. During the next year of production, I will keep you updated with monthly reports on the progress of your Larklamp and copy of Snyxtrap.
DEVELOPMENT: The Larklamp and Snyxtrap development is 90% complete. The core art and designs are finished (as shown in pictures and videos) and mostly what remains is some final Quality Assurance before moving into the full production and manufacturing phase. This also means a bit more play-testing / game-balancing for Snyxtrap, and a little more stress-testing on the Larklamp, as well as finalizing the specific LED choice.
By lending me your support now, you will be helping to kickstart the first full production run so that you can be among the first in the world to receive your very own magic game lantern, which I hope will bring you a lifetime of enchanting play.
Shipping is $10, and is only available to backers with addresses in CANADA or the USA.
To those outside US/CANADA:
I really appreciate your interest, and I want to see the Larklamp shining around the world soon!
Though you will have to wait longer than current backers, I would like to at least offer you the same reward types, pricing, and stretch-goals if you sign-up for pre-order notification before this campaign ends (though obviously shipping costs will be higher).
Risks and challenges
I have been involved in helping to produce and ship around twenty commercial videogames over the past fifteen years working as a designer on big AAA projects, and as CEO and Creative Director running a small studio. I have also produced several award-winning physical art installations. I don't anticipate any delays in production; however small problems with manufacturing and shipping can arise.
As it is a first production run, to help mitigate any unforeseen hiccups, I built hefty margins into the production timeline.
Your Larklamp and copy of Snyxtrap are most likely going to be crafted for you in my studio using my own tools. However, in the event of unexpectedly high demand that goes beyond my own manufacturing capacity, or any unforeseen issues with my tools, I have been working with a large laser-cutting facility (in the USA) over the past year. I have received final-approved cuts of the Larklamp from them, and should we ever find ourselves in a pickle, they are ready to go at a moment's notice.
I have spent twelve months of my own time, money and energy on R&D to make sure this project succeeds with your help, and will do my best to keep you all informed to the production and delivery of all items.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND
