About this project
Thank you for visiting our Kickstarter page. The Pennington Dance Group is a non-profit organization and your donation is tax deductible to the full extent of the law. We are thrilled about our upcoming two week visit to England and ask you to help us by supporting our trip. There are six of us headed to London as cultural ambassadors to continue our successful exchange with the Yorke Dance Project that we started in Los Angeles in 2011. That exchange was wonderfully fruitful, culturally and aesthetically, as we engaged in lecture-demonstrations, shared concerts and created a new joint work titled, Overlay. Read the recent review of our latest concert Traversing Time/s, that includes a condensed version of Overlay.
Of course, any artistic collaboration such as this needs the support of friends like you. So, we’re asking you to help us raise $6000 and make DANCE happen. The funds raised will go directly to dancer’s flights and housing. Yorke Dance Project will host us, but we must pay for all our costs. We have a variety of activities lined up—concerts, lecture demonstrations, classes and workshops—and we plan to engage many different audiences, at all age levels. This is our first trip abroad and we’re excited that we can share our work with dancers and audiences from a different continent. Thank you for helping us leap across the pond.
Pennington Dance Group (PDG) is a Los Angeles based modern dance company. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the PDG promotes dance through performances, education, and outreach programs.
Pennington Dance Group is committed to artistic excellence in creating, performing, and preserving the work of founding director John Pennington, and of other contemporary and past dance artists. Collaborating with visual and performing artists of note, PDG creates and performs works that contain social, emotional, political, abstract, and scientific themes that appeal to a wide audience.
PDG aspires to cultivate an understanding and love of dance through education in the schools and in the community, through national and international performances, and other innovative programming.
John Pennington, the artistic director of both PDG and ARC Pasadena, enjoyed a 14-year career with Bella Lewitzky Dance Company as a performer and teacher, serves on faculty at Pomona College and Cal State Long Beach, and is co-director of the Lewitzky Dance Gallery.
Risks and challenges
We’ve all been working very hard to make this tour a reality--from a discussion born of “what if we…?” to making a new work, and now, transporting all that energy, bodies and sweat to England. Art is a risky business and a challenge we take on gladly because we know the transformative power of dance in a community.
As in any venture there are always risks. Since this is a continuation of a partnership established two years ago, we believe the risks are minimal. For dancers those risks include bodily injury. But we have trained long enough to have another dancer step in if an injury occurs. Our combined years of experience give us a great leg up and we're well equipped to leap over obstacles we might face. Dancers are agile athletes that know how to "mind the gap."Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
