HERE'S THE SHORT STORY
Hey guys, my name is PAZ. Some of you know me as a mashup-playing musician from LA, and some of you may know me from my mixtapes. Some of you don't know me at all, and that's ok too. I'm raising money to record a new album, and I thought Kickstarter would be a great way to do it.
My first mixtape was downloaded over 500,000 times, even though we recorded it mostly in bedrooms and garages. I want my next record to sound amazing, so your contributions will go towards things like studio time, production, mixing, and mastering. Your pledge will also earn you a special reward -- there's a list of them on the right side of this page!
HERE'S THE LONGER STORY
Last year I put out my first mixtape, Young Broke & Fameless. It had 12 songs on it, most of them recorded by 3 guys sitting around a single microphone, because… well, that was the cheapest way to do it.
Anything that wasn’t done live was done in home studios – bedrooms, bathrooms, garages – pretty much anywhere we could fit a laptop and a microphone.
I really didn’t know what to expect when I put out that mixtape. I thought maybe a few people would download it, burn my tracks for friends, maybe even sing along in the car. At the very worst, I thought, I could sneak one of my songs into a party mix and hope no one noticed. Hey, it would be pretty cool if someone started asking, “Whose song is that?”
And then the mixtape got downloaded 500,000 times.
It didn’t even make sense. Half a million downloads?! I was dumbfounded. All of a sudden, I was getting calls from people who wouldn’t give me the time of day a week earlier. Producers, record labels, blogs, promoters with beards. Hell, I was getting emails from artists on my ipod. It was weird.
I went from playing shows for 20 people in dive bars to opening for sold out crowds with artists like Girl Talk, Big Sean, Mike Posner, and Far East Movement.
I still wasn't making any money, but it felt really, really good to know people liked the stuff I was putting out. And it made me wonder what my music would sound like if I was able to record it the same way it sounded in my head...
I have a new record I want to make, and this time, I want to do it the right way -- in a real studio, with a real budget, and without anyone from a record label telling me how it should sound, or what type of music I shouldn't make.
With your help, I can do just that.
I’m trying to raise $10,000. Your contribution will go towards things like studio time, production, mixing, mastering – all the things that make music sound great.
And your contribution won’t go without reward. You'll get cool things I'm saving only for my earliest supporters. Things like a limited edition T-shirt that will never again be printed, handwritten lyrics to one of my songs, or even me recording your voicemail message.
For those of you with a little more to spend, I’ll write a song just for you, or even play a live show in your living room. For a little more, I'll even leave your living room.
Every dollar you contribute will be appreciated from the bottom of my heart. Even if its just 1 dollar, 5 dollars, whatever you can afford is ok with me. Everyone who gives at least 5 bucks will get a special postcard from me saying thanks, compliments of our friends at Postagram.
Stay tuned here for updates! I’ll be posting regularly to let you know how things are going. If you want to check out some of my music, you can download some for free on my Facebook page, and follow me here on Twitter.
Thank you for all your support!
