Comrades is a short children's film produced by third-year NYU student filmmakers, Paolo Bitanga and Gwen Lee for the Intermediate Narrative Production class. It will be shot on HD video with a Sony EX-1 and edited into an 8-minute piece.
In the film, best friends Ronald and Diego take part in a roleplaying game along with most of the other fourth-graders of Evergreen Private All-Boys School, where they pretend to be soldiers. In an attempt to stir up some harmless conflict in their lunchtime war activities, Lieutenant Diego conspires in a mutiny against General Ronald. Lines blur between friendship and betrayal, real and make-believe, as Ronald takes it to heart. Now Diego must find a way to bring his best friend back from the casualties of war.
This is a relatively large student production, as we will be working with a combined cast and crew of over thirty people. Although the school provides equipment, insurance and small funding, a production of such scale would need a bit more financial help.
Funding will go into the bulk of costumes, props, food, transportation, rentals for tables, tents, chairs, and other set operations. We are also highly determined in taking the film beyond the campus walls and submitting to a range of festivals - from highly prestigious names such as Sundance and Toronto International Film Festival, to niche markets such as The New York Children's Film Festival and The Angelus Student Film Festival. All funds will go to these aspects of production and post-production, and neither the producers nor any of the extremely talented artists involved in making this film are looking to make profit. We just wish to bring this film to life and to the world, in its fullest potential.
Comrades is a heartwarming story for kids and kids at heart. We have no doubt that, with such a fun and honest film, we will succeed in reaching audiences to promote the gift of creativity and imagination - especially among children. We are very excited to share this film with the world, and hope you can be a part of it! Thank you!
The film is live-action. We have casted all our talented actors and are shooting late October on the Sony EX-1.
Yes, you may. Just ask, and I shall happily oblige!
