Help me create my dream caricature book!
I want to share with you a selection of my very best work from the last couple of years, plus an additional 50-130 brand new caricatures drawn over the next 6-10 months, making this an entirely unique collection of work! As a backer you can pre-order a copy of 'Heads and Shoulders', get framed sketches and original paintings, watch an online video 'Painting Derren', even have your own face immortalized in print with your very own page!
When I was 16, I bought the book 'Drawn from the Economist' by Kevin 'KAL' Kallaugher. The caricatures within inspired me to draw my own. Twenty-six years later KAL wrote the foreword to my first book and continues to inspire me, both as an artist and a human being.
Caricature makes a statement that says: We are all human. On the one hand it levels the playing field, but on the other it elevates the person being drawn to celebrity status, particularly if you are immortalized in print. To be lampooned is the highest form of flattery.
Our fascination with celebrity has always intrigued me, so my urge to draw those in the spotlight comes from that.
Through doing this project, I want to learn more about my art, more about the person I'm drawing, and ultimately more about myself. My technique is constantly evolving with each new piece as I am never completely happy with the end result, which means I am highly critical of my own work. That is the reason for this project. As soon as I finish a piece, however happy I am with it, there will always be more to learn, a different approach to practice, a new way of seeing the world.
My Career So Far!
I have worked as a freelance illustrator and caricature artist for magazines such as the Radio Times and the Weekly Standard. My painting of Derren Brown (the portrait version) was accepted into the BP Portrait Awards 2012 Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. I have also drawn live caricature for many clients, notably for Sir Paul McCartney at his private Christmas party.
What they say!
I will be aiming to get quotes from as many of the celebrities as possible. Below are just three that have generously given their words for print so far:
I am delighted that Neil Davies has agreed to design the cover and layout for the book. Not only is he a fantastic caricaturist, but he also has a terrific eye for design.
Follow my progress!
I have set up a page on my website where you can track my progress. Every time I complete a page of the book, I will update this page with a thumbnail glimpse of the artwork. I tend to work on several pieces at once, so there might be several days, perhaps even weeks, where nothing is updated. Also I may do a sketch and decide I want to paint it. As I don't want to repeat the caricature (I think this would be cheating the viewer), that sketch will need a replacement. For instance at the moment I have a sketch of Dame Judy Dench which I may paint, therefore I would have to take off the sketch.
Backers of the project will see a preview of the whole piece in higher resolution, either as an update on kickstarter or as an exclusive-to-backers preview page on my website after successful funding.
Foreword by Derren Brown!

Risks and challenges
The challenge is to create a book that I can be proud of and that the reader will want to look at over and over. Expression is everything. A good caricature is one with plenty of expression, as with any portrait. Likeness is also important, but expression has to be the key factor in starting any caricature. There are many other factors that make a good caricature, structure, exaggeration and tone for instance, but for me, expression is king.
Another challenge is searching for reference. Sometimes I spend as many hours looking for good reference material as I do sketching from it. This is the key stage and often overlooked. I have an extensive back catalogue of reference to work from, but will need to spend many more hours searching to get the best reference possible. I use as many sources as I can, internet, DVDs, biography books, magazines, TV, YouTube. A lot of the hard work is done by choosing good reference.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
