Filmocracy is a gamified movie streaming platform built FOR FILMMAKERS to showcase their work and reach audiences directly.
There was once a young director who loved movies from a young age. He recorded and re-watched hundreds of movies to the point that he could recite many from memory.
Once he got older he began working at a specialty video store (back when that was a thing) and spent his weekends filming shorts with his co-workers. Over the course of many years he refined his craft and eventually shot a film that was accepted into the Sundance Film Festival.
That film is RESERVOIR DOGS and that director is Quentin Tarantino.
Quentin is a generational talent who somehow managed to get his career on track from an early age. But in 2019’s star-driven climate, how many Quentin Tarantino’s get discovered today?
In 1991 when RESERVOIR DOGS was shown in Sundance, there were 250 film submissions. In 2019 there were over 14,000.
As a filmmaker, the odds are stacked against you if
- Your film doesn’t have any A-list talent
- Your film’s budget is less than $1,000,000
- You don’t know anyone who programs film festivals
- Your film hasn’t won a major film festival
And majority of us check off all of those.
That's why we made Filmocracy. To create a home for great independent filmmakers to showcase their work that would otherwise be overlooked.
We gamified movie streaming.
You’ve made a great film but you swung and missed at a few festivals. Now you’re thinking of self-distributing on Amazon Video Direct or having a distributor shotgun your film on every streaming platform imaginable.
The problem is, without marketing no one will watch your film.
Because why would they? The world is full of superhero movies, Facebook, Fortnite, and a dozen other things to do instead of risking 90 minutes on a film they’ve never heard of.
That’s why we’ve gamified our platform. To incentivize users to give great unknown films a chance.
On Filmocracy, users will...
- Discover our amazing collection of curated films
- Leave ratings & earn treasure chests filled with virtual currency (Popcorn)
- Complete achievements
- Customize avatars
- Compete with other users for movie tickets, cash, and other prizes
We're not just a streaming platform.
Just about every streaming site has the same layout. Dozens of movie posters sprawled across the screen. Following this layout, movies without recognizable cast are most often glossed over and overlooked.
Filmocracy has a completely different look that's inspired by popular mobile games and gives users pleasing micro rewards with every interaction. By having user ratings prominently overlayed on the film, the friction between choosing and watching is removed.
Movies are complex. There's more to them than can be judged by a thumbs up or thumbs down, so we've broken it down into multiple categories. At the end of each film, you'll rate it out of 5 stars for...
This is key because generating trustworthy rating for films will help other users figure out what to watch. Instead of having to google “What to watch on Netflix January 2019”, they can easily sort by ratings which are unavailable anywhere else.
Once a user submits a rating, our algorithm assigns an accuracy score. This determines whether a user earns a bronze, silver, or gold chest filled with Popcorn and prizes.
Popcorn can be spent on customizing your unique avatar, redeeming prizes like movie tickets & electronics, or exchanging into cash.
We’re using Popcorn as a mechanic to incentivize users to watch films they would otherwise ignore on other platforms.
And if you’re gamifying a platform, may as well make it interesting!
EXCLUSIVELY for Kickstarter backers, you'll be able to select from a very special set of avatars designed by artist David Johnson. David brings to life 4 unique avatars that represent the Filmocracy community and even grant their users special powers like earning bonus Popcorn for watching or rating movies.
ONLY KICKSTARTER BACKERS will ever have these powered up Avatars!
Filmmakers, film critics, and film lovers.
Filmocracy is for you whether you're a filmmaker who can't find a fair distribution deal, a movie blogger that wants to reach a larger audience, or a movie lover who wants to be the first to discover the next Christopher Nolan.
Any way you slice it, it's all about you.
Filmmakers can submit films for Filmocracy to email@example.com
Filmmakers share their slice of the pie based on the number of minutes their films are viewed in aggregate to the total minutes viewed on the platform. If your film constitutes 25% of all minutes watched on Filmocracy for the month, you'll earn 12.5% of all revenue.
50% filmmaker pie x 25% of total minutes viewed = 12.5% of total revenue
Support us today to ensure a platform that fairly compensates filmmakers.
Instead of giving many users small amounts of rewards, we distribute 10% of our revenue to the top users based on activity and accuracy. Our user incentivization structure sets us apart from every other streaming platform and our compensation is the most generous and fair in existence.
No other streaming platform pays filmmakers more fairly than Filmocracy.
Our leaderboard consists of two separate ways to win. Those who earn the most popcorn from watching and rating movies. And those who have the highest accuracy scores for the month. Everyone still earns popcorn for watching and rating films, but the big bucks come from placing on the leaderboard.
Ultimately Filmocracy depends on creating a community that is fair and sustainable for filmmakers and film lovers alike. We believe this depends on creating opportunities in the real world for our users to engage and make human connections. As part of our effort to foster community, we're creating a few ways for you to be involved beyond membership.
Because the world is unfair and we want to do something about it. Corporations like Netflix and Amazon are notorious for underpaying for content from the little guys. Whether it's the $0.06 per hour Mr. Bezos pays via Amazon Video Direct or the $1200 offer Netflix made to one filmmaker for his documentary, we think it's time filmmakers had other options.
One 30-second commercial spot on network television can range between $200k - $700k depending on the show. The standard rate for prime placement across the top of YouTube's home page is $725,000 per day. For any film that costs less than a few million dollars to produce, traditional marketing is too expensive.
"That's why we made Filmocracy. To help filmmakers reach their audience while rewarding users for discovering them."
Our team has over 30 years of experience in film production, finance, sales, & distribution, 15 years of coding experience, and 15 years in research & user experience. It's our combined experiences that helped us formulate the master plan for saving independent film.
We care so much about this mission that we quit our jobs, moved across oceans, and maxed a lot of credit cards (shout out American Express). After all those grand gestures, we got to work and spent the last year creating the prototype. But our journey is far from finished. We need your help and feedback to make Filmocracy beautiful.
The platform is currently in beta testing but we need more funds to reach its final version. We've endured sleepless nights, cried tears of despair, and lost blood (ok, it was a papercut but still) to bring this platform to completion and we cannot wait for you to experience the future of streaming. Here's where your contribution will go.
Content isn't cheap. Fortunately by having a generous 50/50 distribution split for filmmakers we can get away with paying fewer advances. But that doesn't mean it's free, so a portion of the funding will be used to acquire content. (30%)
Almost 40% of the funds will go straight into development to make sure Filmocracy is polished and scalable. Invariably there will be future development expenses but this the minimum we need. (38%)
Streaming and server costs via Amazon S3 and Amazon Cloudfront are great ways to host and send large files but it gets pricey very fast. With the number of users we anticipate will be using Filmocracy, this cost needs to be accounted for to achieve low latency and high security. (15%)
Measure twice, cut once. There are lots of interconnected pieces all making Filmocracy one cohesive platform and that can lead to bugs, errors, and mistakes. Since we're dealing with virtual currency that has real-world value, it's imperative that the platform is secure and stable. Test, test, and test again. (17%)
Once the campaign ends, we will continue our work building out the final features of the site while implementing the sleek new designs we've created. We plan to launch by August 2019 but as an early backer, you'll have the advantage of access to the platform a month before everyone else.
Your early support is the most valuable thing you could ever give us. And that's why we've gotten creative in figuring how we can show our appreciation. You'll find that our backer levels are as wide and diverse as we are, catering to users of all levels-- from film buffs to bloggers and even corporations, we hope to build everyone into a thriving community that remains connected through early access to films, invitations to annual events, and membership in special committees. These rewards are exclusive to you as an early backer. Thank you so much for your support.
Risks and challenges
While developing any technology product is fraught with risks, our team has already built the framework for the platform and has all of the new page designs ready for implementation. The content on the platform has already been licensed and our team is at the ready once the campaign is completed.
One potential issue that could arise is if the content licensors terminate their distribution agreements. However our partnership with providers like Filmhub buffer us against potential losses of content.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
