We made it!
We praise God for His goodness and look forward to making the best possible film!
Thank you everyone who helped us with our Kickstarter campaign! Whether you pledged $1, $1,000, or spread the word, you were a crucial part of our success. Without you, none of this would have ever happened.
If you missed our Kickstarter campaign but still want to give it's not too late. Just visit RosesMovie.com/give. All contributions will go directly to ensuring that we make the best film possible: cast, crew, equipment, editing, scoring, audio engineering, etc.
Also, make sure to subscribe to our email list so that you can stay up-to-date with our film's progress and know how to pray for us.
We'll be shooting the movie during the 2nd week of October and hope to have it on the film festival circuit by the spring of 2014. Follow our adventure at RosesMovie.com
- Paul, Alex, and the entire Roses Team
What follows below is our project description for the sake of posterity. :)
What’s the scoop?
We’re making a touching short film called “Roses” and we have pretty much everything in place except for our funding. So we’re asking our friends, family, and random strangers to help us make our story a reality. In exchange for being a backer we’ll give you some pretty cool rewards, many of which are exclusive.
What’s the story?
Well, if we told the entire storyline here that would give the whole plot away! But if you really want to know the whole story then contact us through one of our social media outlets or Kickstarter and we’ll give you a call.
But without giving away too much, here’s the gist:
Roses is a short film that tells the story of Jessica, a young girl who has recently become blind through a freak accident, and her struggle to deal with the emotions and shock that come with such a traumatic change in her life. Through what seems like a chance encounter on a bus, Jessica meets Kevin, an African American gentlemen from a previous generation who carries a shocking and unexpected secret of his own. Together, they face difficult questions and forgotten memories, and ultimately, Kevin must face the shadows of his past so that Jessica may embrace her future.
Roses deals with the timeless truths of forgiveness, redemption, and faith. Our prayer is that God can use this film to touch the lives of many people struggling with their own "insufficiencies".
When and where are you filming?
We’ll be shooting in early October in Austin, Texas.
Who are you guys?
Alex Lerma lives in Austin, Texas and operates a full-service, independent production company that specializes in business, corporate, and event videos. His goal is simple: to bring cinema-quality videos to the business marketplace and to launch creative projects of his own. Visit his company at: LightStudios.us.
Paul Hastings is a serial entrepreneur from Austin, Texas and has launched and consulted on multiple ventures. His passion is to enable others to fully develop and utilize their talents, whether that be in filmmaking, music, technology, or politics. He can frequently be found on his blog: PaulHastings.me.
Can you pull this off?
We've been making movies with each other for the last 5 years in a wide variety of genres including comedy, drama, commercials, music videos, and documentaries. We've also had the privilege to work on some films you may have heard of including "IndoctriNation" and "Beyond the Mask".
We've had clients including the credit card company Higher One, a Texas Supreme Court candidate, CollegePlus, and the US Army Corps of Engineers. We've also been blessed to win numerous awards at film festivals throughout the years.
Our assistant director is Nathan Webster and our director of photography is Ethan Ledden. Both of them have worked on feature films including “Unidentified”, “The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry”, " and "The Penny".
Combined with an experienced crew, compelling storyline, and talented cast we believe that “Roses” will be a moving film for the whole family to enjoy for years to come.
Do you have samples of your work?
Sure thing. Here’s a recent commercial that we made for the Texas Home School Coalition.
Here are some trailers to films that we’ve worked on.
Finally, here are some trailers to films that Nathan and Ethan have worked on.
Do you have “Stretch Goals”?
$9,500: Starting Goal
We’ll be on our way to a DVD near you!
$14,000: Original Film Score
We’ve got a couple of great composers in mind who’ve made fantastic movie scores and we’d love the chance to work with them.
$17,000: Enhanced Cinema Quality
We’ll be able to get better equipment for the production such as jibs, cranes, lights, mics, lenses, etc.
$20,000: “Roses” on the Road
We’ll be able to take “Roses” on the competitive film festival circuit with entry into 10 film festivals across America and the globe.
Sounds awesome! How can I help?
First, spread the word. The more people that know about the film and our Kickstarter campaign the better. We hope that this film will touch as many lives as possible and this is the beginning of that process. So tell your friends, family, and church groups. Feel free to use Facebook, Twitter, Google+, emails, or anything else.
Second, make a pledge. Ordinarily a project like this could easily cost $20,000. But we’ve been blessed to work with a lot of great filmmakers and everyone we’ve shared our story with has been fully supportive. We’ve been able to get some great deals and some fantastic volunteers have offered their services. But we still need to raise a minimum of $9,500 to get this project off the ground. We also have some stretch goals that we’d like to reach in order to make the film even more powerful. We’ve got some awesome rewards for our backers so make sure to check those out in the sidebar.
Finally, pray for us. Filmmaking is never easy and always takes hard work. Pray that we would remain focused, that pre and post-production would go smoothly, and that we would be open to God’s leading in making the right decisions for the film.
Risks and challenges
We'll have the usual set of challenges that most filmmakers face: weather, sickness, permits, etc. Thankfully, we don't anticipate any extraordinary hurdles.
Finally, here are a few last housekeeping thoughts:
- Each of the DVD rewards replaces the DVD in the previous tier. So if you pledge $70 you will get 1 autographed Limited Edition DVD (not 1 "no-frills" DVD + 1 Limited Edition DVD + 1 autographed Limited Edition DVD).
- Rewards requiring your presence (such as being an extra) will require that you provide your own transportation and lodging to/in Austin, Texas where we'll be filming. We'll send you more details as the date grows nearer.
- If you're a filmmaker or actor and would like to help on the project then give us a buzz with your portfolio or some samples.
- If you have access to a regular city bus (not a charter bus) that we could use on the set for 3 days or know someone that does then let us know. We can provide our own licensed bus driver.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
