Greetings backers - farm update Oct 2016
Hello Supporters - Farmer Paul here saying hello!
This year I focused on continuing transforming the coops and the soil inside them. I have been doing cover crops to break up the hardpan clay and bring up much needed nutrients for plants to continue growing. I also added shade cloths on tops of the roofs. I can't say this year has been the most financially rewarding, but if every year was great then what would be the challenge in farming?
I entered a competition for the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce community block grant program and won second place. I basically had to go through a series of classes, write a business plan, and do a 10 minute pitch in front of judges. It was real great to be a part of it and now I am starting small scale urban farming plots in the city. I used the grant money I received to start the new plot and get some better equipment to grow more. Money goes fast on expenses.
I'm currently about to plant a crop of garlic and artichoke. I'm also continuing planting lettuce greens this winter.
I plan to do another kickstarter and hope to have your support again as my farm continues to grow into Petersburg. I still lease all the land I use and really want a permanent home for my farm which I want in Petersburg - however land cost is still a barrier as it is for many farmers. I wouldn't be reaching out if the farming business was really profitable, but I feel someone has to work at it so quality food is still available locally and I enjoy being a part of the farming community in Virginia.
Last, make sure you get out and vote regardless of who you choose and support your local farmers at nearby farmers markets.
Until next time and my next Kickstarter
