About this project
$45k: Color LED Lighting
We'll research, source and customize a color LED component option. The light will be offered as an add-on sale with an exclusive purchase incentive for Kickstarter Backers.
We'd expect the color light unit to be available in October 2013.
OMG, What Is It?
Have you ever felt that otherworldly, deep channeling that taps your ecstatic joy pool and starts your tentacles undulating? Neither did we until we invented the OMG Jellyfish and experienced the night sky as an underwater playground.
Introducing OMG Jellyfish
OMG Jellyfish is our passionately designed, kinetically optimized and lustrously luminous performance jellyfish. By moving ones legs, arms and hands on a featherweight aluminum pole, you can dive, twirl and undulate your OMG Jellyfish in a spectacle of light and movement.
"Two years ago at the Treasure Island Music Festival, I was dazzled by the sight of glowing, otherworldly jellyfish floating above the crowd during the evening performances. I recently learned that those beautiful jellyfish are an art project called OMG Jellyfish..."
"Aspiring invertebrates will delight in OMG Jellyfish..."
Follow Your Bloom
Across three years of designs, performances and refinements, we optimized the OMG Jellyfish for its captivating beauty, light compact portability and quick easy setup, resulting in the tentacles-down most fun performance jellyfish for first time bloomer - AKA, you!
We hope the OMG Jellyfish inspires you to channel your inner jellyfish, follow your bloom and delight your friends, family and other vertebrates at your parties, festivals and parks, striking giddy wonder into every confounded passer-by.
Our Journey: From Burning Man Art to OMG Jellyfish
What It Is Like to Be A Jellyfish?
When Not Performing
With a simple umbrella stand you can use the OMG Jellyfish as an indoor accent lamp or as beautiful outdoor lighting for your backyard, wedding, or festival campsite.
Skeleton: Custom inflatable ‘petal’, 8 ft. fold-away pole with bungee and micro-height adjustment to 9 ft.
Skin: 30 denier silicon-impregnated white ripstop nylon, Metallic Tyvek White lightweight lycra.
Light Source: High-power white LEDs and drivers. Custom designed circuit board powers by AA Batteries.
The OMG Jellyfish is designed to be setup in low-light situations in less than 5 min. Simply pull the OMG Jellyfish out of it's storage bag, extend and attach the bungee pole, inflate the petal from the mouth valve or hand pump, turn the light on and you're ready to light up the night.
This will not be cheap ill-fitting t-shirt. We will have both men's and women's fit/sizes. Once the campaign is over we'll send you a survey where you can tell us what size you wear.
Backers at ANY level will have an opportunity to add a t-shirt to their cart while confirming their pledge reward at the end of the campaign.
How The Project Funds Will Be Used
We’ve spent the last eight months designing, prototyping and identifying the best manufacturing processes and partners for production.
We need your help to to complete the final phases that will put the OMG Jellyfish on the shelf for fun-lovers everywhere to purchase.
These final phases include:
- Tooling & manufacturing of the inflatable petal
- Manufacturing the collapsible performance pole and lighting component
- Local San Francisco manufacturing of the fabric jellyfish canopy, tentacles and body
Who We Are
Patti Lord is Co-founder of Billion Jelly Bloom. Her affinity for outdoor technical gear is rooted in her e-commerce and marketing roles at The North Face, Mountain Hardwear, and Timbuk2 Designs. She’s in love with jellies, gantt charts and her two kids.
Rob Lord is Co-Founder of Billion Jelly Bloom. His experience as an entrepreneur and startup advisor have made him the perfect businessman behind the bloom. When he’s not negotiating contracts you’ll likely find him deep within the EDM tent with a jelly in-hand.
Derek Dukes is a life long product guy and entrepreneur who enjoys creating product experiences that are unexpected, fun and solve problems in elegant ways. When not holding an OMG Jelly he can be seen sous-cheffing at an underground restaurant, taking pictures on road trips or helping people start and build things relate to their passions.
Ulliyada Bopanna is a Senior Designer at Timbuk2 Designs. He brought his skills as an industrial designer and mechanical engineer to the OMG Jellyfish project and created the inflatable petal component with a perfect balance of aesthetics and functionality.
Suzi Pritchett has designed apparel and bags for everyone from The North Face to Old Navy. She applied her fabric knowledge and theater costume experience to produce the whimsical and durable jellyfish skin that brings the OMG Jellyfish to life.
We worked closely with the guys at Klymit to prototype the inflatable petal component. Their enthusiasm, knowledge and patience through five rounds of prototyping is a big reason why we were able to stamp “Final Proto” on this critical component.
Our friends at Alite Designs were critical in helping identify a high quality and reliable pole supplier in Asia. Without their introduction it’s unlikely we would have been able to work with Yunan Aluminum, one of the best tent and hiking pole manufacturers in the industry.
Many thanks to Bonobo for creating the perfect song to accompany our video and our bloom. Check out his new album, Northern Lights on http://bonobomusic.com.
Our video was lovingly and expertly created by Ricky Montalvo (http://rickymontalvo.com/) an amazing friend, extremely talented end-to-end video director / producer, and a fantastic photographer. Ricky would like to remind everyone to always back up their video projects, TWICE!
Risks and challenges
Like any experince with a Jellyfish in real life, there is always some risk. As a team we’ve backed over 70 projects on Kickstarter, so we know first-hand how frustrating it can be to back a project and wait, and wait, and wait.
We’ve already identified our vendors, negotiated timeline and pricing details with them, designs are final and we’re just waiting for the green light to start production. Additionally, for specific elements, where there might be higher risk to the production timeline, we’ve identified alternatives just in case to mitigate this risk. As experienced product managers we’ve padded the schedule already to make sure we’re not ‘overly optimistic’ in our schedule.
That being said, there’s always a chance that we might be late, but we promise to keep you updated and notified as soon as we know when things aren’t going as planned.
One more thing, as soon as the project goal is reached, even if it is before the campaign has ended, we’ll be putting the wheels in motion with our vendors and manufacturers so things will actually start happening before you even get charged!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
