Hello, we are the Winter Sounds. We play indie new wave dance folk and punk anthems. We have been a band since 2006 and put out 2 LP's and 2 EP's, a couple music videos and played a boatload of awesome shows all over the US, Canada, and Mexico. We recorded our 3rd LP, Runner, with producer Scott Solter (Spoon, St. Vincent) and had it mixed by Derek Garten (Jewel, Lovedrug). We are VERY, VERY proud of it. Needless to say, it ROCKS. It will be our first full-length release since "Church of the Haunted South" in 2009!
We want the best for it and we've put a lot of time and thought into exactly what to do. We love touring. We LOVE it. We have probably played more shows than many of your favorite bands combined. We have NO IDEA how many shows we've even played but its probably close to 800 since 2006... srsly. Since last September we have been on the road full time with two weeks off for Christmas 2011 and a grand total of 20 days off in all of 2012. Touring is huge promotion for us; it's kind of our thing. Like we said, we love it, but it's very demanding, very costly, and very exhausting. We currently book and promote all our shows. And finally, financially, well... it's pretty hard to sustain without some help.
So in the music business, a lot of money is spent on things that people don't necessarily see or equate with the normal part of being a band. We wish it was just all about playing a show. If that was all it took, we'd certainly be rich. :) In many cases a record label pays for a lot of the costs of promoting the music - like making videos, hiring a publicist for press and radio campaigns, etc. - while the band is doing what they do best: playing shows and writing songs. Currently, our band is without a label (not that we aren't looking). So, in the meantime, we're going to raise all the money we'd need to self-release the right way. So that's why we are doing Kickstarter... so we can master, manufacture and promote the heck out of our new album with a full press and radio campaign and production and promotion of two music videos.
The rewards are listed to the right. A couple things to consider first:
The Winter Sounds PROM: The idea for this is that we will go all out and throw a prom, 80's style, with formal dress required. We will be re-envisioning some of our songs to fit the sound and style of the 80's ballads as well as covering a bunch of sweet jams. The idea is you will travel back in time to relive some parallel world prom glory. The Winter Sounds PROM will be held in Greenville, SC, but we are considering multiple locations, next being Nashville, TN, and after that maybe Chicago, IL... who knows. There will probably be an "Under the Sea" theme or something like that. There will definitely be smooth music.
Lifetime Guest Passes: This is for any show we can make happen; we can think of a couple of examples where we might not have the option to provide a free pass (like SXSW or any big festival that might require a pass of some sort). However, let's cross that bridge when we get there. You could become an honorary member of the band for that show or part of the crew or whatever. Point is, we'll work to make it happen. Barring the impossible, you're in with us for life. We hope you like us.
