Fry Thief is a light-hearted asymmetrical microgame for 2 players.
It's a game about poor life choices. Like that time you tried to be healthy and ordered a salad and your friend ordered fries. And how you’re going to have “just a few” to make up for your poor life choice.
Fries = delicious
More fries = more delicious.
The goal of the game is to eat as many fries as possible, and if possible dunk them in ketchup for bonus points.
Fry Thief has an incredibly simple core mechanic. On your turn you:
- Draw one card
- Play one card
That's it. The richness comes from the asymmetrical (meaning they're different for each player) cards and choosing which card to play at what time to devour as many fries as possible.
- Give each player a plate card & deal them three cards.
- Put 12 fries on the Fry Player's plate.
- Salad Player takes the first turn.
Anyone can play the red cards. These cards focus on drawing more cards, getting bonus points, and manipulating the deck.
Only the Fry Player can play the yellow cards. Since you start with all of the resources on your plate they focus on eating as many fries as possible and denying cards to your opponent.
Only the Salad Player can play the green cards. These cards tend to let you steal & eat fries in a single turn.
Fry Thief is designed to be incredibly easy to play. I've been able to play with my 80 year old grandpa! To do that I've added complexity but it's all optional.
This is what the plates look like:
And on the reverse side I have variable player powers. These are optional rules and I recommend you play with these after you've played the game a few times.
Want to take a look at the rules? Download the rulebook (technically a rule card).

We're offering three reward levels:
We're also offering an add-on. If you want to play Fry Thief in a 3-4 player mode you can get an extra set of tokens & cards (which all fit in the box).
I'm a brand new publisher. I don't have a huge bank account to order thousands of units. That's why I'm raising money on Kickstarter. I hope to raise enough to bring this game to life. Without your help, this game will not be made.
In addition to simply getting a copy of the game you're helping me create a game designed for 2 players.
- Improve Fry Thief – There's a few stretch goals added for extra cards as well as extra art. I want to hear your feedback on these ideas.
- Kickstarter Limited – I have no plans to put Fry Thief into distribution. Even if that does happen down the line some of the cards in the stretch goals will be sold separately in an expansion.
I appreciate every backer’s support in making our dream a reality.
Once we high the minimum funding goal then I can start adding things to the game to make the game even better for everyone.
Take a peek at some of the stretch goals!
Shipping will be calculated post campaign via a pledge manager.
The game is designed to fit in the small flat rate box from USPS so shipping costs should be minimal. I've reached out to a few fulfillment centers and these are their estimates. Depending on how many backers we get these costs can be lowered significantly.
Due to the low cost of the game + (hopefully) low cost of shipping to the EU this project should come in beneath the €22 threshold for VAT tax in most EU countries.
November 25th 2017 I'm having dinner with my friends the Jordans (both of their first names are Jordan!) and being a responsible fry orderer I get fries with my meal. Lady Jordan reaches towards my plate and unapologetically says, "I'm a fry thief" while stealing a handful of fries.
While I was slightly upset by the sheer volume of fries she stole I was also inspired to create a game. I mean who hasn't had an an experience with fry thievery??
I made a prototype a week after and have been working on it ever since. I laugh when I read the card titles. And you can't help but feel like a master thief when you steal fries from your friend.
Risks and challenges
Patrick Rauland is an eCommerce expert and has researched Kickstarter for years. Despite the research Fry Thief will have it's own unique challenges. I would love if everything went smoothly, but we are also trying to be prepared for any problem that could arise.
Fry Thief will be manufactured by a reputable company but international shipping always has the potential for delays and complications.
If things run behind schedule, I think the best approach is to always be up front and communicative with backers. It's my goal to make post-campaign updates part of this experience and we plan to update monthly until the game has shipped to backers in order to keep backers informed of the progress of Fry Thief.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
