If you liked ‘Animal Rescue’…
…check out our latest book ‘Planet Rescue’, which has been over a year in the making. It’s lined up and ready for print, but first we need your help. We made a mock-up and shot this video so you know what you’re getting before you pledge:
Planet Rescue is relevant for any teacher, parent and environmental group who want to teach young children about respecting and working towards a greener planet in an interactive and fun way! It supports clear environmental goals such as clean air, clean and plentiful water, thriving plants and wildlife, sustainability and minimising waste. It’s a book full of clear, colourful illustrations, fun little details and a diverse range of characters.
Planet Rescue is simple but cleverly-executed. Between each spread there is a transparent page which, when turned from right to left, magically transforms the action underneath. Each transformation highlights a benefit to our environment - as you can see in the animated image below - such as taking the car off the road and placing it back in the garage. The simplicity of this action is immediate and gives the child a sense of empowerment as if they have actually made it happen!
All our books start out as pencil doodles in a sketch book. Patrick’s incredibly conceptual mind manages to conjure up some clever ideas, simply executed, where the transparent page has to turn and land exactly in the right place for the idea to be conveyed. He has to think not only about the illustration and the idea but also how the colours to be printed onto the acetate will blend with the paper page underneath.
It’s not that easy - really! We like the page turn to be a surprise. We have come to understand the two main things that children like in our books: controlling the acetate page turn (back and forth… often repeatedly!) and trying to guess, before the page is turned, how the picture will change. So getting this right when designing the book is very important.
As parents ourselves, we remember the books our children loved where they could spot little details on the page that went unnoticed at first glance. In Planet Rescue, the title page shows a group of children discussing what they can do to help save the planet. The children are all wearing little red capes. We made sure these capes reappear throughout the book, whether it’s the pair in the boat nature-watching or, as you can see in the picture above, hung up on the hooks in the bathroom.
If you look carefully, you will also see the father and son from the opening spread reappearing throughout the book as they cycle through the countryside to their friend's house, where the boy will join in the fun on the trampoline. And for fans of our other books, there are a few other details and backgrounds that they can spot too!
2019 is the Year of Green Action (YoGA) in the UK. It aims to raise awareness of, and encourage, action beneficial to the environment. Green action can be delivered by:
- Connecting (Improving people’s understanding of the state of the environment)
- Protecting (making greener decisions)
- Enhancing (inspiring people to enrich and improve their local environment).
We hope Planet Rescue will encourage the younger generation along this path to a greener future.
And finally, the endpapers - chimneys becoming trees!
Why we came to Kickstarter?
We need your help.
This is the first time we're appealing to backers via Kickstarter to finance the print run of one of our books. Since starting out in 2009, production costs have gone up considerably, particularly in recent years, but our retail price has remained the same. However, we feel it’s essential to maintain high quality production values at an affordable price. We will be printing with vegetable inks and FSC paper which also comes at a price. We can only do this with your investment.
We've worked hard to reach a point where you can see exactly what you're getting before you pledge. We have everything set up to make sure that if we get funded, printing can start at the push of a button!
If you’ve helped us to reach our goal we’ll be on track to publish this Autumn!
Thanks in advance!

Who are we?
We are Patrick George (illustrator) and Ann Scott (publisher) and we live and work from our studio by the sea on the Kent coast of England. We have three - now teenage - children, a cat and a three-legged rescue dog called Oscar, who keeps us company and takes us for a beach walk every morning, where we often discuss what we have to do that day.
We started working from home ten years ago in 2009 and since then we have written, illustrated and published a range of picture books and been nominated and shortlisted for various awards. Our last and most successful book Animal Rescue (shortlisted for the Best British Book Design Award 2015) focused on saving animals in captivity. Planet Rescue encourages children to protect our planet in a variety of fun and easy ways.
Patrick is particularly interested in animal welfare and environmental issues and works closely with Blood Lions, Born Free Foundation, Sea Shepherd and WildAid. Below are the posters he designed for the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate World Wildlife Day on March 3 each year:

Risks and challenges
As with any project that involve third parties and as first time crowdfunders there may be issues that we could not have anticipated. However if hurdles arise our promise is to be transparent and let you know how we are solving it. Our goal is to make a product that we are proud to send to you and anything short of that is not good enough.
We will be sure to update all campaign supporters if there are any unforeseen risks or challenges.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
