This project's funding goal was not reached on January 29, 2012.
About this project
While overall library use has grown in recent years, some libraries are reducing hours, cutting services, or even closing doors entirely. We are creating a documentary to examine the relevance of libraries in a society changed by modern advances, such as the Internet and electronic reading devices.
We have already interviewed several people, some of whom are shown in the trailer. We are seeking funding to bring a more national perspective to the film, covering costs such as travel expenses. Funds will also be used to enhance the film, such as with graphics and narration. Our goal is to complete the bulk of filming by early summer, depending on the availability of sources across the nation, and to complete editing and other post-production work before the end of 2012.
The documentary is the directoral debut of Patricia Snyder, a professional journalist with independent narrative filmmaking experience, working with fellow producer Jes Webb, who has owned his own media company for 22 years. We have been fortunate to work with several industry professionals, who have been willing to help when their time allowed.
I want to pledge now, but I think I might be able to pledge more later. Can I change the amount of my pledge?
Yes! We encourage you to pledge as soon as you know you want to support the film in some way. Not only does getting the notice of a new backer make us happy, it shows the world an overall base of support for the idea of a documentary about libraries. We know that times are tough and money can be tight, especially at this time of the year, which is why we started pledges at just $1. We wanted people who don't have much money to pledge to at least be able to make a symbolic showing of support.
Here's how to change your pledge amount: Visit the project page and click “Manage Your Pledge.” Enter a new amount in the pledge amount box. Note that you are not adding to your existing pledge; the amount you enter will be the total amount collected if the project is successfully funded.
I don't really need another T-shirt, book bag, etc. Is there a way I could back the project and have copies of the film donated to a library?
That's an excellent idea! We have added pledge levels for one or more donated DVDs. Many library systems have multiple branches or like to keep multiple copies of items in the collection to reduce the waiting list.
Kickstarter will collect pledge money after the Jan. 29 deadline and only if we meet our goal of $25,000. If we don't meet our goal by the deadline, you will not be charged. Pledging as early as you can helps the project to build momentum and shows others that it has interest and support.
