About this project
It was a true dream that turned into reality. Last year, a local runner wanted to take a crack at a sub 4 minute mile.
The feat is something that was once thought to not be humanly possible. With very short notice, former North Carolina High School State Champ and Georgetown and NC State standout took a crack at it. In just a few days time, we secured a track and a timer. The rest was history.
In front of 400+ people that showed up on 4 days notice, Sandy Roberts was paced by his brother Logan through 2+ laps in 1:59. Although he came up short, the seed was sowed. Take a look at the video yourself. It was a great night. We had to do it again.
This year, Sandy will look to improve on his personal best time of 4:01.21 with some of the best runners in the nation.
We just need a little help putting it on.
We have planned an incredible, grassroots event that we want you to be a part of. There truly is something for everyone, whether you run or don't!
The event will be the inaugural "Sir Walter Miler." We'll have 3 races, starting at 9pm on Friday, August 1st, 2014. We'll kick the night off with the Great Outdoor Provision Co. "Raleigh' Finest" Mile, where many local celebrities will compete in an exciting, handicapped/head start race. Then we'll have the Capital RunWalk "Women's Sub 4.5 Challenge," where top runners will take a crack at the 4:30 barrier. Finally, we'll conclude with the Capital RunWalk "Men's Sub 4 Challenge," where the field will be set up for a sub 4:00 attempt. The event will be an official "Bring Back the Mile" event.
What else are we doing? We're having a party... Starting at 7pm that night, we'll have live music, giveaways, and food trucks at Raleigh Brewing Company, right across the street from Meredith. After the races are over, we'll take it back there for the after party.
If you're over 21, we'll have an exciting event at RBC called the "Sub 4 ABV Challenge" where Raleigh Brewing, Trophy Brewing, Fullsteam Brewing, New Belgium Brewing, Mystery Brewing, and Natty Greene's Brewing will be providing a keg of their best low alcohol beer!
What else? Want to run with the pros? Saturday morning, Bobby Mack will lead the elites from the night before, and anyone else who wants to come on a trail run at Umstead Park.
Everything is free to the public.
Need more? One exciting Kickstarter reward we have is the pre-race dinner at the Busy Bee Cafe on Thursday, July 31st, 2014. You'll have the opportunity to have an excellent meal with all the runners that are in town already, with food by Chef Dave Mitchell and beverages served by Busy Bee Owners, Chris Powers and David Lockwood.
This have YOU pumped to run fast? Now's your chance to find our how fast you can go. Now's your chance to find out. Another exciting reward we have is a one hour consultation with UNC Assistant Coach, Logan Roberts, as well as a 1 month training plan that will lead up to the Magnificent Mile in Downtown Raleigh on September 14th. You'll receive a complimentary entry to the race see how fast you can go around the Capitol and back down Hillsborough Street!
We need your help to raise a little more money to make this the best event possible, so please consider buying a tech shirt, a coffee mug, a singlet, a seat at the dinner, or even a chance to fire the starting gun for the "Raleigh's Finest" Mile!
