“Patchwork Of Light” is a new CD of healing-oriented music by Steve Zarate, a singer-songwriter based in Athens, Ohio. In spare arrangements featuring Steve’s voice, acoustic guitar and harmonica, Terry Douds’ bass and Rusty Smith’s fiddle, the album’s 14 songs center on transforming and transcending what’s broken inside, between and around us. A labor of love, this recording combines beautiful songwriting, positive messages, delightful performances and exceptional sonic quality to give listeners an hour’s worth of catchy and uplifting original songs.
Why this project, why now? “Patchwork Of Light” is music to strengthen people searching for support during troublesome years. A well-produced cycle of healing songs, it weaves positive messages into poetic imagery sung with simple instrumentation and moving melodies. Chronicling journeys away from despair and brokenness and toward renewal and clarity, these songs can help fill emotional sails for those striving for a better world.
This project addresses those struggling with hopelessness and sadness, offering themes of healing wisdom implicit in connections with nature, music, spirituality and intuition. The phrase “patchwork of light” comes from the song “Almost Awake,” and I believe that in many ways the human species is almost awake, despite contrary appearances, in terms of getting it together and living in perfect harmony like the old commercial. We can still get there, or maybe it will be our descendants, but there is time to turn away from destructive practices and to heal our selves and our world. And we might start by acknowledging that everyone is, to one degree or another, broken and in need of patching up. These songs suggest that light, signifying love and beauty, has something important to do with how the patchwork heals us.
I’ve been writing songs about these subjects for decades, primarily to heal myself, and the vision behind them is crystallized in this new album. In trying to fulfill an artist’s role to move people’s emotions in positive directions, I want my songs to comfort folks but also strengthen their motivation to pursue a better world, one infused with peace, love, health, beauty, harmony and well-being, one that can and should be, and that’s the contribution I hope this project will make.
How will my money help? I need your help to get this project off the ground! This album feels like the closest I’ve come to achieving my musical ambitions and probably represents my best work yet, but I haven't the wherewithal to take it to the next step. Thus, hoping that the good will I've built up as a musician will carry this project forward, I'm turning to crowd funding to help me turn “Patchwork Of Light” into the physical product I believe it should be. Making it a real marketable CD, handing it to donors and deejays, getting it reviewed, distributing it and selling it will not only support my artistry, but can also benefit and reassure listeners in need of healing songs like these. And so by contributing to this project you help me create an attractive package to showcase this music and bring a special album to the attention of healers everywhere.
I consider this album an important professional calling card, and want to present the music in a splendid-looking package featuring a full-color lyric booklet with excellent photography and quality graphic design. Achieving my Kickstarter goal will cover these remaining expenses associated with this project:
- Manufacturing and shipping of 300 CDs (from ‘Nationwide CDs’)
- Photography by Susie Blauser
- Graphic design by Isaac Smith
- Performance & design assistance by Terry Douds
- Mixing & Mastering by Rusty Smith
- Online promotion and positioning
- Postage costs for mailings to deejays and publications
Money raised beyond these costs will go towards
- Musical equipment needs (guitar strings, harmonicas, cords, etc.)
- Website development
- Vehicle upkeep
all of which are important to my profession, as I plan to keep up my performance schedule in 2019 while also working hard to sufficiently promote and publicize this project.
Upon completion of this campaign in late April 2019, I plan to send all elements of the final CD package to Nationwide CDs, and expect the resulting copies of "Patchwork Of Light" to be available for distribution to donors by approximately mid-May 2019.
What makes this album special? This project gathers some of my best healing-oriented original songs into a cohesive album full of positive material. With that in mind, Rusty Smith and I have carefully assembled a bunch of killer-sounding audio tracks that present each song in the best possible light. The culmination of six years of hard work and inspiration, this is a recording that I hope will bring joy and reassurance to a lot of folks. We completed the album in April 2018, and this campaign is my attempt to follow through with all that effort and get this record out at last.
The quality of my four collaborators makes “Patchwork Of Light” even more special. Rusty Smith is an outstanding audio engineer and recording artist, known for producing WOUB's “Live From Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch” radio program, as well as for his own excellent album, “Rusty Smith And Friends,” and his membership in The Boys Of The Hock and The Brickersons. Rusty makes my music sparkle and shine, and he contributes a gorgeous fiddle part to “All Before You.” Terry Douds, another great musician, lays down terrific bass parts on 12 songs, putting each one perfectly “in the pocket.” Rusty’s talented son Isaac Smith is designing this CD’s graphic look. And pictures by Susie Blauser will grace front and back covers and the lyric booklet. Susie’s a gifted nature photographer, and her expertise at capturing light dancing through picture frames makes her the perfect choice for this project.

Risks and challenges
Putting an album of original music out has inherent risks. The “public” may hate it; bad reviews might shoot it down; deejays can ignore it. Any artist faces the prospect that their work won’t find favor. But I believe wholeheartedly in this music and these songs, so I’m willing to take that chance this time because I’ve found that I am a far more effective salesperson when I believe in my product this much.
I intend to work hard to promote “Patchwork Of Light,” particularly on social media. My “SteveZarateMusic” page on Facebook has 260 followers, and my “Steve Zarate” page has 735 friends, so I’ll start with them. I'll also reach out to friends and family via emails and phone calls, and try to get an article on the campaign into The Athens News (local paper). And as part of the Nationwide CDs purchase (upon successfully reaching this campaign's goal), this music will become available for sale worldwide via Bandcamp, Amazon, Spotify, iTunes, Pandora and many other online platforms.
I also plan to market the “Patchwork Of Light” CD throughout my home region of southeast Ohio and beyond, offering it:
• for sale at local outlets like White’s Mill in Athens and InSea Soundshop in Nelsonville, and wherever I perform,
• for review in The Athens News, the Columbus Dispatch and similar publications,
• to major public radio programs that feature music of this nature (Mountain Stage, World Café, e-Town, Folk Alley, etc.), and
• for airplay to radio stations like WOUB (Athens) and WCBE (Columbus) and, via Airplay Direct, to stations all around the country and beyond.
I intend to work hard to sell out of my initial run of 300 CDs, using profits from those sales to make more and keep momentum going.
I don’t just want this record to come out just so I can sell 200 or 300 CDs to my friends and local fans. I want it to come out so it can make a difference to people everywhere, even to the whole human race, and to help bring about the shift in consciousness that needs to happen if we are to adapt to our changing planet and survive these challenging times. So if you like this music, believe in this record’s healing messages and want to see it come out and reach more people, please help me achieve my goal by pledging at one of the levels on this page.
