“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.... do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:1-4 ESV)
What is The Art of the Christian Ninja?
The Art of the Christian Ninja is a devotional book and discipleship guide for people who want to connect their faith and life in a new way. It's more than a book -- it's a partnership between art and writing, a balance of black ink and white-space, a trying together of teaching and questions, meditation and practice, humour and study.
The art, humour and brief chapters will inspire young readers while seasoned believers will still find themselves enlightened and challenged.
What's in The Art of the Christian Ninja Book?
I wrote this book as an introduction to private, personal discipleship. It has been read by Christians of different maturity levels -- from relatively new believers to mature elders in the church -- and each said it helped them grow in different ways. I tried to avoid big words, but never shied away from big concepts, in the hope of making it accessible to young believers and old.
To get an idea of the topics covered, here are the chapter titles:
- The Christian Ninja’s Source of Power: (The Art of Dependence)
- Your Daily Exercises: (The Art of Devotions)
- Hiding in Plain Sight: (The Art of Infiltration)
- Staying Clean in a Dirty Place: (The Art of Purity)
- Travelling Light: (The Art of Simplicity)
- An Agent of Light: (The Art of Sabotage)
- Covert Operations: (The Art of Ghostly Giving)
- The Christian Ninja at War Part I: (The Art of Combat)
- The Christian Ninja at War Part II: (The Art of Assassination)
Why a Kickstarter?
I know there are lots of great devotional books and discipleship guides out there, but I think The Art of the Christian Ninja is different. My vision for this book was always that it would be more than just something to pick up and read, but by a visual journey, an engaging meditation, a personal conversation, a meaningful training ground to help young believers, and older ones who are looking for inspiration, connect their faith and life in a new way.
For this project to get into people’s hands I need your help! I’m a full time pastor and family man, so when it comes to publishing books, I’m as independent as it gets. The book is all done, but I need your pledge to help pay for the design, printing and distribution costs, so I can get it off of my computer and into the real world.
What is a Christian Ninja?
The name “The Art of The Christian Ninja” was birthed from an encounter I had with God after reading Matthew chapter 6. He gave me new eyes to see it from a different angle and it spawned in my mind something that I couldn’t shake. So, like any writer, I wrote a book about it!
Here’s a bit of what God was telling me, from the introduction to the book:
"Jesus says that the good things we do shouldn’t be done to be seen by others, but done in secret. Ninjas love doing things in secret! Jesus says that when we help people, we should do it quietly. Ninjas love doing things quietly! Jesus says that we should be sneaky about how we give to the needy. Now that’s Ninja talk!"
Pastor Allan Descheneau (M.Div, BRCM, CBS) is pastor of Beckwith Baptist Church in Carleton Place, Ontario, a blogger/writer at ArtoftheChristianNinja.com and a podcaster at CarnivoreTheology.com! He has a passion for helping people find the tools and inspiration they need to pursue a deeper, consistent and more meaningful relationship with God.
*Why So Much for One Book?
You may wonder why it's so expensive. The basic answer is because each and every book and prize needs to be shipped to my house and then shipped to you. If this Kickstarter goes well, it will give me the capital I need to sell the books at a more reasonable price in the future. Hopefully you will see this as not only an opportunity to get the book for yourself, but as an investment that makes it possible to put the book in the hands of many others.
Risks and challenges
The book is done and the printer is ready, so all I need is the capital to get this show on the road.
I've worked hard to make sure that I have all my ducks in a row, but there are always risks involved in this kind of endeavour. I think I've left enough margin for those kinds of hiccups -- but you know how it goes.
The only risks I foresee are if the Canadian dollar tanks, Canada Post increases their rates substantially, or CreateSpace (the printing company) blows up. Other than that it should be smooth sailing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
