Places is a print magazine that gathers stories from the far corners of the world and looks at how our environments spark our creativity, challenge our perspectives, and ultimately shape our lives. Whether focused on photography, poetry, or prose, every page aims to inspire you to explore the world and open your eyes to the power of place.
The purpose of the magazine is to bring meaningful accounts of writers, artists, and makers offline, to be held in your hands and marked with your pen. This collection of works is printed and bound with the intention of being read, kept, and revisited as you move through different locations and experiences in your life. It isn’t meant to live on your coffee table. It’s designed to be carried with you on your journey and provide inspiration when you need it most.
Our opening issue is comprised of photo collections, essays, stories, interviews, poems, and even collages. It’s a representation of the people who inspire us, the work they do, the environments they’ve moved through, and the large and small moments they’ve encountered along their paths. The “theme” of Issue One is community, an idea we seek not to define but to explore in tandem with the impacts of place — both literally and figuratively.
A few of the contributors we have lined up for Issue One are: Jarrad Seng, Sarah Eisenlohr, Zenzele Ojore, The Volcano Pilot, Alexandra Henry, Mic-Anthony Hay, Ella Grace Denton, Phil Torres, Kimberly Fox, Mika Aberra, Jenn Brown, and Tyler Blodgett.
We know — 60k sounds a bit wild. But this goal covers more than just printing and shipping costs. The funds we raise through this campaign will also go toward compensating the contributors who made this issue possible, and those who will offer their time and energy to the following three issues as well. We don’t believe in asking for free work (or time), so we’re doing our darndest to support those featured in the mag. Any additional funds will go toward getting the magazine off the ground and keeping issues two, three, and four ad-free.
A Look inside the Magazine
Note: these are mockups that are intended to communicate the aesthetic and design of Places. They aren’t final layouts — so don’t judge us too harshly.
Places will be printed on Heidelberg printing presses in Berlin through Heftwerk, a company committed to operating on a minimal environmental footprint. The magazine will be comprised of paper sourced from responsibly managed forests, recycled materials, and natural, petroleum-free inks. It will be around 185 pages in length and will measure at roughly 8 x 10.5 inches (21 x 26.5 centimeters), the ideal size to chuck in a bag, read on a plane, or even peruse on the john.
All Kickstarter backers will receive a copy of Places – Issue One (I mean, that’s why we’re all here). Other rewards include the following.
“Go more places” Tote: A limited-edition tote bag made from recycled cotton that promises to help you carry your belongings and strike up conversations with strangers. Dimensions: 15.5"L x 15"W.
“Places” Pin: A one-of-a-kind enamel pin, because who doesn’t like those? Dimensions: 1"L x 1"W.

ONA Bag: A handcrafted, limited-edition ONA x Passion Passport Bowery camera bag to accompany you as you go more places. Exterior dimensions: 10.5"L x 7"H x 4"D; interior dimensions: 10"L x 6"H x 4"D.

*Flights must be within North America
How Is Places Connected to Passion Passport?
That’s a great question. Places is a tangible extension of Passion Passport, though it exists as its own entity and delves further into the exploration of how creativity and movement are intertwined. If you aren’t familiar with Passion Passport, it’s a community that connects explorers, creators, and storytellers from around the globe and gives them a platform to share the experiences that have impacted them the most. Since its start, Passion Passport has been committed to exploring the transformative power of travel. And now, it will continue that journey in print and act as the publisher of Places.
Risks and challenges
Although this Kickstarter campaign marks the launch of Places, this project has been in the works for some time. Over the past five years, Passion Passport has worked to establish itself as a digital platform that brings shared experiences, rich conversations, and meaningful travel stories to life, and in that span, it has become clear that certain stories require a platform that encourages slowing down and engaging one’s senses. So, while this is certainly a new endeavor that comes with its own set of challenges, it is one that is being built off of the learnings of another and is embracing the medium that inspires it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
