About this project

Hello everyone!

Please support me with the funding of my  'Idle Lands' exhibition by taking your chance to buy a print from this series or reserve your spot on my storytelling workshop next spring!

Who am I?

My name is Pascal Vossen and I am a Dutch freelance photojournalist and documentary photographer based in Stockholm, Sweden.

I have been working as a photojournalist for over three years, predominantly focussing on vulnerable groups affected by extreme poverty or conflict. I have a background in law (LL.M.) but have been lucky enough to find myself in a position where I could chase my dream job.

Over the past two years I have been closely working together with my friend and colleague, Nils Alder, an Anglo-Swedish journalist and writer. Together we have covered stories in Iraq, Ukraine, Turkey and recently Mozambique. All of these stories have been published by international publications. You will be able to find examples here:

-The Daily Telegraph

-CNN

-El Pais example 1, example 2

IDLE LANDS

For our latest project ‘Idle Lands’ we travelled to the most Northern corner of Mozambique to cover a story on land grabbing for a Swedish NGO called ‘Afrikagrupperna’. The Niassa province, which borders both Tanzania and Malawi, has been the scene of extended cases of embezzlement and land grabbing. It is in this fertile part of the world that foreign forestry companies bought up more than half the land for the plantation of pine and eucalyptus trees. Through our work, we attempt to give the reader a sense of what life is like for small-scale agricultural farmers affected by the arrival of these large-scale plantations.

This project resulted in the documentation of in-depth personal testimonies, where farmers talk about broken promises and where the existing confusion and disparity between their way of life and the profit model of a corporate world becomes all the more evident.

In this series, I attempt to catch the viewers attention towards the issue with distinctive theatrical lighting while maintaining a reportage style of photography. With this, I am pushing the limits of a photojournalistic approach and entering the realm of documentary and art photography.

What you see as a viewer is the end result of many weeks of work put into researching, finding funding and post-production. But it does not end there! Nils and I tirelessly work towards promoting our work. This in order to get it seen by a larger public and uphold our responsibility as journalists to share the stories of the people we meet.

The good news is that my work ’Idle Lands’ has been selected, from among nearly 1700 submissions, to be shown at the Autumn Salon (Höstsalongen) of the Stockholm Museum of Contemporary Photography. This is, of course, fantastic news and means that the work will get a lot of exposure!

However, the flipside is the high production cost of printing and mounting, which is roughly 20.000 Swedish Crowns. So in order to fund the exhibition, I will need your help!

You can do this by pledging any amount you can afford!

The rewards you can choose are on the right-hand side column and consist of prints, limited edition prints and a spot on my STORYTELLING workshop in Stockholm, Sweden next spring!

This leaves me to thank you for your time and for listening to me! I hope I have inspired you to help me realise this exhibition. If you have any questions regarding the exhibition or rewards than drop me an email on info@pascalvossen.com.

Thank you for your support!

The Exhibition

Idle lands will be part of the annual group exhibition Höstsalongen (Autumn Salon) at Fotografiska, the Stockholm Museum of Contemporary Photography. I have been given the chance to show eleven photographs of this project between the 6th of October and 3rd of December, 2017.

The profit from the pledged amount will be used for the production of these eleven prints. This will consist of printing and mounting costs of roughly 20.000 Swedish Crowns.

All eleven prints will be matt C-prints (chromogenic color print) mounted on dibond, a very stable and rigid aluminium composite sheet, in order to produce a high quality and museum worthy finish. All of which will be produced by one of Stockholm's finest print labs. The smallest photograph will be 30x40cm and the largest two photographs will be 60x80cm and 40x110cm.

Rewards

Do you just want to participate in helping me reach my goal? Then go for the first option! You will get my gratitude and I’ll send you a postcard of the exhibition!

PRINTS

If you would like to have a signed print, but do not wish to pay the premium for a limited edition, then go for any of the three available sizes (see rewards in right column). If you choose the smallest size I will decide what print you receive, so this will be a surprise!

*All photographs are printed on archival fine art paper by one of Sweden’s finest print labs.

If you go for a limited edition print then you will be assured of the fact that you have an exclusive, one out of 20 copies, art work. With the print you get a certificate of authenticity provided by the print lab that will keep the original file on archive. This way you can rest assured that there will be no more than 20 copies printed of this image in that size.

The option of FRAMING

When you have chosen a limited edition print, then you can choose between having it delivered to your framer of choice or I can take care of the framing for you. If you want to use your own framer then pledging the amount towards the print is enough. After reaching my goal I will contact you for the address of your local framer and send them the print, so they can get the print framed and ready for your wall.

If you decide that you want me to take care of the framing then choose any of the recommended two options and pledge the extra amount towards my goal. Both the light oak and the dark walnut frame are exclusive made-to-measure and hand crafted out of the highest quality wood. The Art glass will make sure that you will have a clear view on the print without the interruption of reflections. This is in line with the highest standard of framing done by one of Stockholm’s most experienced art framers. As a thank you for your trust I will make sure to send your framed print free of charge!

THE WORKSHOP

Last but not least you can choose to pledge towards your spot on the STORYTELLING Workshop that I will organize in Stockholm, Sweden. This will be a one day workshop for a select group of max. 8 participants in which I will teach you how to approach your project or assignment from a photojournalistic and documentary storytelling perspective. The workshop is aimed at photography enthusiast looking to develop their work into stories (a red line!) and beginning photojournalists and documentary photographers looking to quickly advance their knowledge with useful first hand tips and techniques. I will not discuss camera techniques or basics particularly, but will try to give you useful advice where needed throughout the day.

*You will need to bring a digital DSLR, mirrorless or rangefinder camera and laptop with a version of Lightroom or Photoshop!

*If possible bring your physical and or digital portfolio with you to the workshop!

Schedule

The workshop will be split into a morning of theory and discussions, and after a lunch we will head out into the field.

We will discuss among others:

From 9:00 - 12:00:

-Your portfolio and how to develop it

-Ethics of photojournalism

-Preparatory work and research techniques

-The approach to your subject

-Your assignment for the afternoon

12:00 - 13:00: we’ll have lunch together. This is included in the fee. Take this moment to mentally prepare for your assignment.

13:00 - 17:00: we will head out in the field and everyone will have to do an assignment for the day.

17:00 - 19:00: I will asses your work and give feedback. I will also encourage a group discussion on the participants work and we will together make an edit for every participants work. Afterwards we can all have dinner together.

Risks and challenges

Hopefully, I will reach my goal and therefore enable everyone that pledged money to receive his or her reward. Any profit left after the production of the exhibition will go toward the production costs of my upcoming project on the issue of so-called honour based violence in Iraqi Kurdistan as well as amongst the diaspora in other European nations (with focus on the UK and Sweden). Unfortunately, this barbaric violence is still the reality for many women of Kurdish decent living in Sweden and the UK, and I strongly believe that the issue needs to be brought to light!

With regard to the Workshop:

I am aware that my career as a photojournalist and documentary photographer has not been that long, but its has been very progressive and intense over the last three years. In 2014 I received an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from the London College of Communication and in 2013 I had the pleasure of doing an internship at NOOR collective in Amsterdam – these experiences together with the projects I have done over the last few years have given me the right knowledge and confidence to take the next steps in my career...

Teaching is new to me, but I am dedicated to my profession and guarantee that I will do my very best to make this workshop an interesting learning experience for all participants, including myself.

*For the workshop to take place I will need a minmum of 4 participants. In case this minimum is not reached you will get a refund directly after the Kickstarter campaign!

With regard to the Prints:

I am a perfectionist and find it incredibly important that my work is distributed in the highest possible quality! To ensure the level of detail and colour accuracy in the printwork I prepare the prints on a calibrated wide gamut screen and export a TIFF file for the printer. They will double check the colors and sharpeness before they go to print.

Shipping:

All (framed limited edition) prints will be shipped insured in case they would get damaged in transport. If you receive a damaged print, then just send me a picture of the damage and I will assure you get an new one asap!

Some countries or postal services are known for being slow with customs or shipping - but I will do my best to make sure that your print is shipped out on time. I always intend to keep you up to date on shipping information, but I hope you understand that once the print leaves my studio - there’s often little I can do to speed things up with my shipping partners or your country’s customs department. If you do run into any trouble - please contact me directly at info@pascalvossen.com

Cost and extra charges:

Backers are responsible for any Duty/VAT/GST charges for their own country, which may vary according to each country’s legal and taxation structure. I legally cannot pay for or compensate backers for their own country’s Duties or VAT or GST. Upon purchase of any the prints, you are acknowledging that you are aware of and intend to pay for your own Duties or VAT or GST on your purchase.
