About

21st Century Part Writing is a book I've wanted to write for years. Outdated practices, unjustified principles, and lack of pragmatic application are not to be found here. This systematic and comprehensive yet concise compendium is intended to provide the composer of any style or experience level with the tools to write rich, interesting, and supportive parts to realize a melody and harmonic progression. Understanding how to part-write effectively is a crucial skill to be able to pull out in countless musical contexts, from your next symphony to your next chiptune, your next electronic ambient track to your next film score. What is common amongst John Williams, Nobuo Uematsu, Bach, Mozart, George Gershwin, Stravinsky, Ravel, Duke Ellington, Jacob Collier, and many more of our favorite composers? You guessed it, they've all mastered the art of part-writing. Go and check out your favorite climax of your favorite symphonic work. 100+ instruments, and yet a score reduction most often reveals that a small number of clockwork parts gives rise to the powerful and deceptively complex surface structure. While part-writing isn't the only effective musical texture, it is among the most popular, most versatile, most aesthetically pleasing, and sadly most neglected by many modern composers in their studies.

From the simplest of diatonic tonal progressions to polytonality and octatonicism, my book walks you through the principles of part-writing with a focus on practicality and musical examples. Voice-leading and voicing, diatonicism and symmetrical pitch collections, extended jazz harmony and french impressionism, the implications of the harmonic series and how different combinations of instruments sound better with different voicings: it's all here.

Every single concept is illustrated with an audio example and explained step-by-step in the context of utilizing it in the process of composition. Every musical example was composed by myself or drawn from my own works. Unlike other descriptive theory curriculums which aim to show commonalities of old composer's musical works, my book is prescriptive: it shows you how to achieve the aesthetic you want to achieve. There are no esoteric or pedantic rules without reason to be found here, but rather spectrums and principles that, if navigated consciously and carefully can allow you, the composer, to achieve whatever musical surface structure you'd like to in the realm of part writing.

Don't take my word for it, read the first two chapters right now, for free: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-dVQpgv88tS9inFbfnMTASlMPz9EPEkD/view?usp=sharing (note that formatting and editing is in draft form, so forgive errors that will be corrected later)

Risks and challenges

This Kickstarter will allow me to forgo music composition work for four months so that I can focus all of my efforts on completing this ebook. I am a perfectionist and won't release it until I am completely satisfied with it, but completing it by February 2020 is very reasonable. In the unexpected event of any delays to ensure the highest quality product, I will communicate as clearly as possible what my progress is and update the deadline of completion accordingly.
