About this project
This project is about exploring the beauty of sound, to create a live sonic experience that encompasses you, the audience, and is as cathartic for you to listen to as it is for me to make. I'm inspired by the beauty of my remote homeland, New Zealand, which I miss so much when I'm away. I'm also inspired to find beauty in parts of everyday life - patterns and forms, mundanity, longing, excitement, nature (tamed and untamed), connections, fragility... (the list is endless) - and attempt to communicate this awe to you, through music.

My name is Annabel Alpers. I'm a composer, musician and singer. I recorded and performed for ten years as the solo computer-folk/space-pop project, Bachelorette. Bachelorette released four albums on Drag City Records (USA, UK, Europe), Mistletone (Australia) and Particle Tracks (NZ), and toured with the likes of Bonnie "Prince" Billy, The Magnetic Fields, Low, Stereolab, Bill Callahan and Animal Collective.
I'm from New Zealand and have been living in Baltimore, MD, USA for the last four years. Since my last record was released, I've been collecting sounds, recording and developing ideas for a new album and live surround-sound creation, titled Remote. I'm super excited about the new musical territory I've been exploring, to present to you, and I'm hoping (trusting) you will share in my excitement!
Remote is a live, multiple-speaker, surround-sound experience. My intention is for you to be enveloped in beautiful sounds and emerge from your comfortable listening space transformed - your heart aflutter...
Remote is first and foremost a live project, and our focus is on creating an enchanting and transformative experience for the audience. The music will be transmitted through speakers on all sides of the theatre space, to surround the audience and allow you to hear the mix of sounds from different perspectives. I will be playing, singing and layering the sounds while Adam Cooke mixes the sounds throughout the space, and occasionally plays drums. After debut performances in New Zealand and Baltimore, Adam and I will be touring the work around the USA, Australia and beyond. There will be a Remote album as well - available on digital formats and on vinyl.
How will it sound?
Remote will be choral in effect, and we will be creating a live "choir" with my voice through the digital technology we have on hand. Over the last few years, I've been making recordings of sounds I come across in everyday life and turning those sounds into new instruments (this is a little hard to describe, but you will eventually hear it for yourself). These will accompany the "choir", along with some more traditional instrumental sounds. It will be a natural progression from my previous music in Bachelorette - new developments in my search for cathartic beauty in personal/universal texts and sounds.

How will it happen?
I started on the creative work for Remote in June 2016, and Adam Cooke and I will be working on the project up until (and beyond) its debut in February/March of 2018. Thanks to The Arts Council of New Zealand and their belief in this project, I received assistance towards my basic living costs while engaging in the creative work for Remote. This assistance was given on the understanding that the project relies heavily on new technology, that it will be debuted in New Zealand, and the equipment and travel costs must be funded from outside sources. So this is where you come in...

I need your help to purchase the equipment that will allow us to complete and present the Remote album and live surround-sound experience. The good news is, everyone who contributes to this project will receive a reward that is equal to (or worth more than) the amount you spend, plus you will forever live happily in the knowledge that you were essential to making this new project happen. Where will your money go?
Transparency can be boring in its details, but I (and more importantly, you) value it all the same. Here is a detailed rundown of the exact costs that need to be covered under this Kickstarter campaign in order for Remote to be presented:
Adam and I have already contributed megabucks worth of our own equipment and software (not to mention time!) towards this project. Below are the extra items required for us to create and present the work, which we need your help to procure:
Soundcraft SI Performer 1 live mixing console - $3,800: Portable mixing console required for the mixing and live presentation of the work.
MOTU 896mk3 8-channel audio interface - $995: An audio interface for routing the separate tracks live from the music software to the speakers.
3 x ADAM Audio A7x studio monitors - $2,247. Studio monitors for the creation and presentation of the work. I have already purchased 2 of these monitors and need help to purchase another 3 in order to mix and present the work. They cost $749 each.
ADAM Audio Sub8 active subwoofer - $899. Subwoofer used in the creation and presentation of the work.
Total equipment costs: $7,941
The artist/designer who is to create the Remote cover and program art is yet to be confirmed, but I do know that whoever it is will be amazing, and $500 is the absolute minimum I should pay them. I will meet any costs that exceed this amount.

Kickstarter costs, fees, rewards:
Kickstarter has a 5% fee, and payment processing fees (between 3% and 5%), which comes out of the total funds raised. 9% of the requested $11,011 equals $990 in fees.
I’ve calculated that the cost of the production of rewards will be around $480. I will meet any costs that exceed this amount.
I'm also factoring in a 10% buffer for extra expenses (eg. extra travel costs and time taken to fulfill the Kickstarter project and rewards), which equals $1,100
Total costs and fees: $2,590
Total funding required from Kickstarter: $11,011
If the campaign earns more than this amount, all extra Kickstarter funds will go towards our travel costs for presenting the work in New Zealand and Australia.

Risks and challenges
Kickstarter asks all project creators to address any potential risks and challenges, and explain how we are qualified to overcome them.
The biggest obstacle to getting this album and live surround-speaker work completed is simply the cost of purchasing the equipment we need to execute it. Much of the material has already been recorded and the next step is to start recording new material, and to mix and re-write existing material, as it is shaped and inspired by the new surround speaker arrangement in the studio. I am certain that the "Remote" album and live work will be ready to present in the time frame we've given, once we have the equipment we need.
I have a Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree in composition and have recorded, released and toured four Bachelorette albums internationally. Adam Cooke has a Bachelor of Music degree in music production and engineering from Berklee College of Music and has engineered for indie bands such as Wye Oak, Beach House, Swirlies and Future Islands, as well as countless acts that have toured through Baltimore (from indie rock to traditional Rajasthani folk). I'm confident that we'll see this through. We're just eagerly preparing to take it to the next level.
