HOLY COW YOU'RE AWESOME!!!
Scroll down for more information about the project, but we've got some special announcements!
Thanks to our wonderful backers, we've funded AND hit our first two stretch goals! Here's what that means:
- Baltimore party at the Windup Space to celebrate the end of our campaign, 5 April 6p-8p
- NEW ADD ON UNLOCKED: 8.5x11 prints of Ann Uland's "Interrogation" pinup--check Update #6 for details!
- NEW ADD ON UNLOCKED: 8.5x11 prints of Jabari Weathers's "Interrogation" pinup--check Update #7 for details!
What's next? Well, if we hit $2675, we'll publish a short article from Parker about the process of creating a Vengeful Ghost comic. Can we make it in just 5.5 hours?
We've been making comics and putting them on the internet. We have a whole year of them published or stored up--52 pages ready to rock your eyeballs and stir your spirits. Now, we want you to have something you can hold in your hand, show to your friends, and admire on your shelf--so we're making a perfect bound book:
It's going to be 60+ pages of comics and bonus material, collecting the first year of Vengeful Ghost stories: "Thursday Night," our romantic drama; "The Coriolis Effect", our all-ages sci-fi; "Pay to Win", our Twilight Zone-esque horror; "What the Mine Gives", our existential memento mori; and "Interrogation", our psychological espionage tale that will start in the next few weeks.
And we need your help.
Vengeful Ghost is a magic trick. We snatch stories out of Parker Hicks's head, project them through the lenses of brilliant editors and their red pens, transmute them through the magic of pen, ink, and tablet with some incredible visual artists--and publish them, one page a week, for free, at VengefulGhost.com. We've printed some of our stories in saddle-stitch ashcan editions, but now we want to have a classy perfect bound we can put in your hands.
Vengeful Ghost is Parker Hicks and:
Kata Kane designed our logo and is designing the book.
This is a seriously star-studded lineup. Click those links and be amazed, and check out their full bios here.
The tiers are pretty simple:
- $1 gets you recognition, in the book and online.
- $9 gets you a digital copy of the book ($1 off retail!).
- $14 gets you our physical edition (also $1 off) in addition to that digital copy.
- $200 gets you all the above, packaged lovingly with a single page of original art from one of three stories that were produced using traditional, ink-on-paper methods. Your pick, first come first served!
Here's where it gets fun. You can get additional gifts by adding small amounts to your pledge.
We have two add-ons:
- $5: Three (3) 2"x2" die-cut stickers of the Vengeful Ghost logo. By increasing your pledge by just $5, you'll get 3 stickers you can put wherever you like (assuming you don't get caught). Add $5 for every 3 more you want!
- $8: One color 8.5"x11" print by Ann Uland!
- $8: One color 8.5"x11" print by Jabari Weathers!
But wait, there's more! Some of our stretch goals (see below!) will unlock new and exciting add-ons for your pledging pleasure.
We've set our funding goal at the bare minimum we need to cover design, print, and shipping fees. Let's not stop there! Every dollar over that bare minimum means more and better Vengeful Ghost in the future. It reimburses the team for our expenses and eventually means more profits to share.
It also means more cool stuff in the book! Every $275 over our goal (roughly 15%) unlocks an awesome new addition to The First Year's backmatter. Here's our lineup!
$1875 (UNLOCKED!): We're making this thing, and sending it to you. We'll also throw a party in Baltimore the night the campaign closes! Aw, yeah.
$2125 (UNLOCKED!): We'll include a beautiful "Interrogation" pinup from Ann Uland (in black and white) in the back of the book--and color prints of it will be unlocked as a brand new add-on!
$2400 (UNLOCKED!): We'll include a haunting "What the Mine Gives" pinup from Jabari Weathers in the back of the book and unlock prints of it as a brand new add-on!$2675 (locked!): We'll add an article from Parker on the process of making a Vengeful Ghost comic, from first notebook scrawls to finished product!
$2950 (locked): If we reach 160% funding? We'll add in an essay from a new teammember, discussing the social themes of a Vengeful Ghost comic. More to come on this as we approach the goal!
Risks and challenges
We're committed to open and transparent communication. We'll be giving weekly reports on the status of the project through Kickstarter's Update system, and the plan is to have everything fulfilled by the end of June.
Here's our plan, and what could go wrong at each stage:
Art production: 52 out of 52 pages are complete. No worries!
Final layout and design: We've built in a week between the end of the Kickstarter and when the printer needs the final, layout ready files. We've retained a fabulous designer, Kata Kane, with the expectation that will be a busy week. Worst case scenario: We miss our print date and the printer has to slip our delivery. The books still get printed, but you may get them as late as July 2017.
Printing: The printer, Keness of Pittsburgh, is reliable and well-recommended by other indie comics publishers. We've already been in touch and they've cleared their schedule to print us 300 books by the end of May. Worst case scenario: an Act of God requires Keness to slip their printing schedule. Unlikely, but if it happens we'll keep you posted and develop a new timeline just as soon as we can.
Shipping: Shipping's a bugbear, especially for first-time creators, but we think we've learned from the horror stories. We'll be throwing a packing party for our local friends, and since everything except the original art rewards will fit in a simple cardboard envelope, we think it should be pretty smooth.
Original art will be a bit more of a challenge to ship and may have more than one shipping leg to go through, but that's why the shipping cost is higher for that tier. We'll be shipping in a stiff bubble mailer to ensure safety.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
