Kirkpinar, the longest sanctioned sporting competition in the world celebrating its 650th year anniversary. An undocumented event!!!
In 2010, a very unique project took me back to my home country for many reasons. I traveled to Edirne to document every aspect of Kirkpinar, the longest sanctioned sporting competition in the world and a fascinating subculture; the wrestling, the prayers, the community and a range of participants. I wanted to create a visual document of the festival and how Kirkpinar's traditions have been maintained. This year Kirkpinar will celebrate its 650th year anniversary. There is a lot more to appreciate than just a celebration of an old world wrestling competition. It's a celebration of identity and strong relationships. It is also a way of showing the importance of cultural sustainability in today's world whilst also highlighting how traditional cultures continue to bring people together.
I have to go back to document the 650th year celebration to complete this project. Without documenting this important day and anniversary this body of work can not be complete. I am kindly asking for your generos support to make this happen and pursue it further.
With this project I hope to draw attention to the importance of culture today, and question what is it that we want to take to the future. Culture brings humanity together and enhancing the meaning of life. UNESCO has been an important ambassador of cultural protection and works at promoting Kirkpinar as a viable and relevant activity in contemporary society. In October 2010 they made Kirkpinar a protected tradition - helping preserve it as one of the most important cultural heritages of the world.
By helping towards making this project complete, you will be part of keeping the integrity of traditions and cultures alive.
Thanks to Kickstarter giving me this opportunity to reach out for everyone's support.
