Paramita Sound is almost ready to re-open its doors after a year long hiatus.
After three years of holding down a shop at 1417 Van Dyke on Detroit's East Side, Paramita Sound is re-opening inside of Detroit's historic 1515 Broadway Space. The new space, a serious step up from the unheated house we all came to love on Van Dyke, is entrenched in one of the brightest legacies of Detroit dance music – once a venue for parties like No Way Back and Deep Detroit, 1515 Broadway will be Paramita's new home, functioning as a record store, label, event space, and bar.
While we embraced the DIY at our first space, we plan to really tighten up at 1515. The funds raised through this Kickstarter will go toward the buildout of our space, a professional DJ set-up to host both local and traveling artists, an energy-efficient, zero-waste bar, and, most importantly, an opening inventory of records.
Some of us were old enough to catch the very tail end of what went on at 1515, but for most of us, it’s a legend we never grow tired of hearing. 1417 and 1515 might no longer inhabit the spaces they built, but both can continue to build their legacy in a space that’s not ready to quit.
Paramita has never asked for much. We've loved throwing free parties, hosting all sorts of events, while never once taking home a paycheck. Now, we need your help to raise the funds to open our doors in time for Movement, so this dance-music specialized record store can be just walking distance from the leading electronic music festival in the world. That festival happens at the end of May. Let's get to work.
Arts and Entertainment
Paramita made a home for itself on Detroit's East Side with a monthly event called The Beat Profile. For three years, we hosted producers, beat makers, percussionists, violin players, vocalists, and pretty much everyone in between at an inclusive, free of charge party for all ages. We don't believe that subculture has to be relegated to low budget, DIY spaces, and we want to bring the same level of inclusion to 1515. With a newly installed sound system, state of the art DJ equipment, and a bar, we can invite our community into an experience that's hard to find elsewhere downtown. The space is also an opportunity to connect with and host talent from both around the corner and around the world, utilizing our location within the Siren Hotel as an ideal situation for accommodations. Paramita's walking-distance proximity to festivals like Movement and Detroit Jazz Festival gives us a chance to interface with musicians and collectors from virtually all genre, age, and interest groups.
One of the biggest conceptual changes to Paramita Sound will be the addition of a bar. At eight seats, the bar is an opportunity to explore beer and wine with the same level of curation as the records in the store, while serving accessible and well-sourced products at higher volumes during events. Not only does the bar add another level to the ways we can interact in the space, the revenue it will generate is crucial to backend costs like talent programming and record imports. A significant portion of our fundraising goal will go toward the buildout of the bar, as well as other equipment, tools, and glassware.

Risks and challenges
We're opening an independent record store and wine bar in a downtown area with no investors, no credit cards, and not much for savings. Paramita has already raised a significant portion of our opening funds through Motor City Match, The Michigan Women's Fund, and The Siren Hotel. While we've certainly cut our teeth on fundraising, this project, a major construction overhaul inside of a historical building, is full of unforseen costs and surprise additions. We're definitely braced for these uncertain circumstances, and the funds from this Kickstarter will help to cover our necessary costs as well as leave some room to account for a rainy day.
In addition to the generous donations from our friends, family, and community through this Kickstarter, Paramita Sound will also start a roll-out of events, some ticketed and some not, to promote and feed into this campaign to ensure we reach our goal.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
