STARRY EYES is a feature horror film written and directed by Dennis Widmyer & Kevin Kölsch and produced by Travis Stevens.
Update! With Only 1 Day Left, STARRY EYES Picks Up Momentum!
With only 1 day left for our campaign, there's still time to donate and help spread the word! We've crept past our goal, but every little bit extra just helps make the film that much better. As you may have seen yesterday, we added the awesome Pat Healy to our cast. And this week, in general, has been great. Check out some of these major film sites that have picked up the story of our campaign:
Update! Pat Healy joins the cast!
Today we're thrilled to announce that we've added another awesome actor to our growing cast list: Pat Healy! If you don't know Pat's name yet... you soon will. He's been acting for over 15 years for directors as widespread across the gamut as Michael Bay and Werner Herzog. In recent years, he's become a more recognizable face in such indie hits as The Innkeepers and Compliance. This year he starred in our own producer Travis Stevens' SXSW Midnight Audience Award winner, Cheap Thrills.
Pat's a talented guy and we're stoked to have him on board. And when you see how awesome the role he's playing is, you'll love him even more.
Stay tuned for more announcements and, if you don't already, follow Pat on Twitter at @Pat_Healy.
Update! New reward added for long distance speaking role in film!
REMOTE CONTROLLER Status - You control things from a great distance. Be a part of the production from miles away. Want to have a speaking part in the movie, but can't make the trip to Los Angeles? Then this is the reward for you. Dial your performance in from afar. There are two instances in the film where actor's audition tapes are watched from a television. At this reward level, you video yourself reading the lines we send you, then you send us the video and we put it in the movie. You're a star without even leaving the house!
This reward costs the same as the RESURRECTED Status, which also gets you a speaking role in the film. The difference is, with this status you don't have to travel. We only have 2 of these available!
Pledge for this on the bottom right!
Update: We had to cancel our big-ass pendant raffle.
Turns out raffles are a big no no on Kickstarter and we were informed we couldn't do one. But no worries! If you pledged $10 or more specifically to enter this raffle, just Message us here and we'll take care of you. And for more details on this, check out our latest update:
In the meantime, we're trying to not come up with another way to offer this awesome item to one lucky soul. Stay tuned!
Update! Jay Shaw's 'Starry Eyes' Poster Unveiled!
It's here. After a long, cruel tease, here is Jay Shaw's gorgeously haunting, exclusive Starry Eyes Kickstarter poster. Staring at this thing makes me feel a lot of emotions inside. You pick up new details with every glance. The print represents an innocent girl being enveloped and corrupted by darkness and becoming something all together evil.
We are printing a limited run of these. All will be numbered and signed by the artist. The poster is 18 x 24. They will be screen printed on black paper and mailed to you directly from the filmmakers.
To claim the poster, bid on the WORSHIPPER status. This status will also get you the Thank You on our site and a DVD or Blu-ray of the finished film. Or, if you just want the poster, bid on our new IDOL status ($65). Thanks!
ABOUT THE FILM
Starry Eyes tells the story of Sarah Walker, a determined and desperate actor who would do anything to land her first big role. Unfortunately this leaves her prey to a satanic cult who has been operating as Hollywood’s gatekeepers since the Golden Age. They have the power to make her a star, but it comes at a terrible price.
What follows is an occult tale of paranoia and possession that explores themes of transformation, body horror and a woman going through a psychotic breakdown. Ira Levin meets David Cronenberg.
We're interested in ambition in its most ugly and visceral form. Our vision of Hollywood is bleak. It's portrayed as a frightening landscape of failed hopes, crushed dreams and corrupted moral decisions. We want to take the age-old tale of the budding young actress searching for her big break and transform it into a nightmarish metaphor... with a memorable monster you won't soon forget.
ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
This will be the second narrative feature film from Parallactic Pictures. Since forming in 2003, we’ve written and directed over five short films, commercials, music videos, a documentary on bestselling Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk, and a feature film that recently had a two year run on VOD. During that time, we also collaborated on multiple award winning screenplays.
Joining us on this venture is Travis Stevens, who will be producing this film under his banner Snowfort Pictures. Travis has quickly risen to become one of the most prolific genre movie producers around. His films include A Horrible Way To Die, The Aggression Scale, The Thompsons, Jodorowsky's Dune and the two recent SXSW Midnight entries, Cheap Thrills and Big Ass Spider.
We have prepped this film for several months already and are now in official pre-production. Shooting is slated to begin in Los Angeles, CA on April 29th and will run through mid-May.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
Kevin and I have successfully raised money in the past, but for the most part we've remained DIY guys. This gives us total control over our films and a vision that is 100% ours. But one of the caveats of doing it this way has meant we've had to self-finance the bulk of our projects. But with Starry Eyes we're telling a very subversive story that casts a disturbing lens on the film industry, the idea of fame and the possible origins of some of our most famous starlets. It's all done in good fun, but it's the type of movie we'd have an extremely tough time raising money for the traditional way. And so we'd rather not compromise our vision.
We have experience working on a micro-budget. Our first feature film (Absence) was made for half the budget of Starry Eyes and yet we shot the entire climax in Super 35mm, worked with a full crew and an ensemble cast, and successfully got the film onto VOD for over two years.
If you donate to this campaign, you will be insuring that the movie gets made. We have no back-up budget. The money you'd be donating isn't to build upon some hidden nest egg of funds. It will all appear on screen!
LET'S TALK ABOUT REWARDS
We're offering as many tangible items as we can for $175 and under: shirts, buttons, postcards, DVDs, Blu-rays, posters... In the higher reward brackets, you have the opportunity to be a Producer on the film. You decide if you want to be Associate or Executive, but Executive gets you in the opening credits, puts your name on the poster and DVD/Blu-ray and gets you invited to all of our festival appearances. And if that wasn’t enough, we’re offering set visits, speaking roles in the film and even a chance to die in the film's chaotic and bloody climax (think: Carrie).
You may have also noticed that we not only brought on Mondo artist Jay Shaw to design us a custom Kickstater poster (The yellow poster above is not this poster. It will be revealed here very soon!), but that Jay has also donated the entire set of his Blue Underground series. This is 17 out of print posters that are extremely rare. The set is called “Don’t Go Out Tonight” and was not only featured in an exclusive Mondo Gallery show in Austin, TX last June, but was also covered in the media for the exciting event it was.
We also have an extremely rare Fight Club poster designed by Kevin Tong, we only have 2 of them, so get ‘em while they last!
But wait! There's one more thing!
I've known Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club) for over ten years. I created his website back in 1999 and have been webmaster ever since. In that time, Kevin and I co-directed a documentary on him and were later thanked in his novel Lullaby. And now Chuck is willing to do the same for you!
When Chuck heard I was planning this Kickstarter, he wanted to help. He's been a big spiritual supporter of my work in the past, so I was happy to hear this. But I could never have imagined how ridiculously awesome his idea would be.
Chuck wants to thank 100 donors in upcoming 2014 novel, Beautiful You. You'll be immortalized on the acknowledgements page of your favorite author!
Beautiful You focuses on the apocalyptic marketing possibilities of feminine pleasure. Here's Chuck's description of the book:
"It's a comic/erotic thriller, a mash-up of 'mommy porn' and chick lit such as Sex and the City, and fantasy lit like Clan of the Cave Bear. Imagine if Ira Levin had a baby with Jean Auel."
There are 100 of these prizes available and they are spread out among two reward brackets: CULT and BRAINWASHED. The latter includes all of the "Starry Eyes" rewards that come before, plus the Thank You in 'Beautiful You.' AND, if you want to donate to the higher reward categories yet still want the Thank You, just send us a message and we'll tell you how to easily upgrade your pledge. Good luck!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We're going to make this the most transparent campaign we can. We have an official website launching soon that will include production diaries, behind the scenes photos, exciting announcements and of course, updates on the pre-production process. We want you to feel like you're on our crew. We want you to experience what it's like making an independent feature film from scratch.
Join us on this journey and you'll get more than a finished film and some prizes at the end of it all. You'll get a shared experience on something special.
Yes, you can. We've already had a few people do this. Simply pledge for the Cult ($200) or Brainwashed ($350) status above and then send us a Message through the Kickstarter website, telling us what name to include in place of yours. We have a roster of notes and names we've been keeping, so this will be easy to do for you. (and it's a great gift for someone!)
Yes. Anyone on Chuck Palahniuk's Twitter who has seen these signed & inscribed books being offered to those who donate sooner, rather than later... you will still get the book even if we don't reach our goal.
