About this project
About THE LIFE AND TIMES OF HELLA HUNG
THE LIFE AND TIMES OF HELLA HUNG is a documentary feature that follows the journey of Hung Van Lam and his "superhero" alter ego, Hella Hung. The film explores the magical realism that defines Hung’s life, and challenges the viewer to examine the nuanced distinctions between need and desire. Using stop-motion animation as a way to visualize Hung’s self-ideations, the result brings to life a fantastical look at the blurred lines between dreams and reality.
Our story begins when Hung decides to ride his bicycle from San Francisco to Los Angeles after gaining notoriety as an innovative, norm challenging entertainer in the break dancing arena. This penchant for pushing the boundaries drives Hung on a quest to seek the brighter lights and bigger stage of Hollywood. He eventually lands in the audition rounds for So You Think You Can Dance, but…things don’t go as well as Hung had hoped.
What follows are a series of hilarious and humbling adventures that force Hung to examine his definition of success as a performer and a friend. Along the way, we learn that the magic of Hella Hung is based on our ability to believe – but does the magic persist if we don’t play along?
Challenging Social Norms Through Film
Hung Van Lam is not your typical protagonist. For what he lacks in stature, he makes up for in the veracity by which he believes in his dreams. Yet for all of his audacity and optimism, Hung Van Lam is compelled to invent Hella Hung. He has come to believe that he must be a separate version of himself in order for people to take notice or care. In spite of this, Hung remains driven to galvanize the people around him to seek positivity.
As filmmakers, we believe this story has the power to deconstruct social norms and transform our understanding of happiness and success. Through Hung’s journey, we will be able to examine some of the many factors that compel individuals to subscribe to social conditioning and popular imagery. At its most fundamental level, this is a story of perseverance in the face of upsets and upheaval; Hung is the consummate underdog. We hope that our work can both inspire and reveal the tenacity of the human psyche as we attempt to reconcile who we are expected to be with who we desire to become.
How is the director qualified to lead this project?
This is Christopher Woon's second feature documentary film, his first being the 2011 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival Audience Award winning film Among B-Boys! He has been making films since 2004 and has shot. He has sharpened his filmmaker acumen as a freelance editor and now videographer from everything from music videos, small business videos, to corporate. On top of that, as a former roommate of Hung Van Lam aka Hella Hung, for 2.5 years in Los Angeles, he likes to kiddingly call himself "The Foremost Expert On Hella Hung". Well, he's mostly kidding, but his status as an underdog filmmaker very much fits with Hung's overall underdog identity. Chris has matched Hung's inventiveness and tenacity the way nobody else could, in making this film.
We have been working on this project for quite some time, and have amassed several years of incredible footage. What does this mean? THE LIFE AND TIMES OF HELLA HUNG is near completion! We already have all of the material we need and have started the early phases of the editing process.
This is where you come in.
We need your help to bring this story to life! At the moment, we are only about one fourth of the way to reaching our minimal fundraising goal, so there is much more to be done. While some of our equipment rentals and post hours will be donated, there are still many expenses to be covered.
Your contributions will go directly towards:
- Stop-motion Animation and materials
- Content rights (So You Think You Can Dance and Last Comic Standing clips)
- Color correction
- Sound mix
- Film festival submissions
- Promotional materials and publicity
In an ideal world, we would be able to raise $23,700...but $15,000 is the bare minimum we need. We are also looking to other fundraising mediums beyond Kickstarter to fulfill our remaining funding goals.
Share and Celebrate!
Make this yours! We are very excited to work on this project and look forward to your involvement. Please take a moment to look through our list of Backer Rewards and find one that is the best fit for you.
Even if you are unable to contribute financially, please help us spread the word.
We are also more than happy to hear from you in regards to any suggestions you may have for achieving our fundraising goals.
Finally, THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT! We cannot even begin to express our gratitude for your role in making this possible.
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge is funding related. Without the resources we are seeking, we will not be able to proceed with the stop-motion animation or with the content rights that will provide the proper content to fully understand Hung's journey. Without these elements, the story will be incomplete. If a setback arises, we will have to adjust our approach and seek an alternative method of presenting Hung’s story, though there may not even exist a viable alternative that would do the film justice.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
