Paper Journal : 01
Who We Are:
Founded and launched in 2013, Paper Journal aims to showcase the photography, fashion and culture we value in an exciting way. It is unique in that we feature a lot of different types of photography from unknown or new photographers alongside established names. Our contributors range from journalists, curators, editors, stylists, photographers and other industry professionals.
We continuously research in the field of photography, shaping and envisioning the most current evolutions of the medium. By empowering the artists’ we work with, we try to be a mirror of how photography affects and permeates our lives.
To date, we have published more than 500 interviews, features, photobook reviews, fashion features and studio visits, as well as invited over 300 photographers to take over our popular Instagram account (@paperjournalmag). This, in turn, has attracted a loyal audience with an online following of over 200,000.
Our Founding Editor, Patricia Karallis, has been part of the jury and/ or nomination process for a number of awards and competitions, including the MACK First Book Award (UK), BJP Ones To Watch (UK) Photolucida Critical Mass (US) and the Australian Photobook of the Year (AUS).
Paper Journal has also been featured in AnOther, BJP & AOP Image Magazine, Issue 1, Dazed, Feature Shoot, Miniclick, Photoworks, Self Publish Be Happy, The Photographers’ Gallery, and Wallpaper.
Our team is made up of the following:
Patricia Karallis, Founding Editor
Giada de Agostinis, Editor
Shirley Amartey, Fashion Director
Josephine Platt, Fashion Features Editor
Why we need your support:
2018 sees Paper Journal enter its 5th year; we have become a go-to site for contemporary photography that not only shares a vast array of work across the medium but does so in a critical and engaging way.
We rely on the photography community as much as that each step we have taken throughout the past 5 years has been possible thanks to you. Without your help - editors, curators, photographers, collectors, designers, photographers, students, readers; all that we have achieved would not have been possible.
For the past 5 years, Paper Journal has run independently of any sponsorship or advertising. Our team contribute to our online magazine voluntarily, because they are passionate about and believe in Paper Journal as a platform that encourages and promotes contemporary photography.
Working voluntarily comes with its challenges; all of our team work on other projects outside of Paper Journal in order to support ourselves financially. Without any commercial funding, this has allowed us to share content we are inspired by and passionate about, without it being compromised.
As we continue to grow and foster a dialogue around contemporary photography, we request your support in sustaining the future of Paper Journal and our next project. To celebrate turning 5, we’ve shifted our focus from online to offline, with our 1ST PRINT EDITION. In order for us to continue sharing high-quality content, we felt it was an important step forward to engage with our readers in a new and different way. Considering our love and ongoing support for photography and photobooks, we thought it was a natural transition and one that will hopefully cement us more firmly as a respected resource.
Your vital contribution to our Kickstarter campaign, however big or small, will enable us to support our team and contributors, with our main goal of seeing our edition printed.

How your funds will be used:
Our 1st edition is now designed, all interviews and features have been edited and proofed, and the last step in the process is for it to be sent to print. Whilst we would have loved to complete the entire process in-house, we felt it was important to commission a design studio, Catalogue, to assist with the look and feel of the edition. This allowed us to focus on what we do best; researching content and collaborating directly with all artists and writers, to produce what we feel is a fantastic 1st issue.
Every part of your contribution to our Kickstarter campaign goes back directly to fund every aspect of getting our issue printed. Whether it’s to pay our staff and contributors, collaborators, the physical production of the book or shipping. We didn't want to cut any corners with the production of the edition and have opted for high-quality paper for both the cover and inside pages.

リスクと課題
The greatest challenge with any finished book is shipping; once printed, our main goal is to have all copies shipped by the end of May / beginning of June.
Our funding goal is high, however this is due to our edition weighing in at a hefty 880g, therefore all book rewards will be sent as a parcel (whether shipped locally or international) and with either tracking or signed for via Royal Mail, in order to make sure you receive your reward. If you have any postage related questions or any further queries related to Paper Journal or this campaign, please get in touch - info@paper-journal.com -and we’ll get back to you ASAP.
