About this project
PaperFlock presents the official 30th anniversary Stern Pinball coffee table book!
Slash joins the project and there are new rewards!
Hi Kickstarter community! If you’re like me, you grew up seeing pinball machines at ice cream shops and pizza parlors when you were young. You probably played a few games and admired the art, but didn’t really start to enjoy playing until five years ago when the pinball resurgence began! Pinball is huge today: record numbers of people going to pinball tournaments, the collector market has been heating up, barcades are popping up all over the place, and there are even new documentaries just coming out now.
In 1999 Williams Bally / Midway stopped producing pinball machines and Gary Stern purchased Sega Pinball to form Stern Pinball, which was the last major manufacturer still producing pinball machines. The story of Stern is also the story of pinball for the last couple decades.
Presenting Keeping the Ball Alive: 30 Years of Stern Pinball, a collectible coffee table book that takes a deep look at the Stern company: the artists, the technical side, and the games created over the last 30 years! The finished book will be a dazzling representation of the world of pinball through the eyes of the Stern company. Filled with art, diagrams, interviews, and interesting facts, it is sure to inform and satisfy even the most die hard pinball fan.
Stern is working with PaperFlock to provide exclusive access to art, designs, and models in order to give fans a glimpse inside the manufacturing process from concept to playable table. We'll be speaking with the game designers, as well as Stern employees who have been there from the start, and sharing their reminiscences.
Inside the book you'll find thirty years' worth of memories from the days of Williams, Data East and Sega all the way up through the most recent 2017 releases. We will dedicate approximately 50 pages per decade, plus a look at what the future holds for both Stern and the pinball industry.
Featuring interviews with:
- Gary Stern
- John Trudeau
- Steve Ritchie
- George Gomez
- John Borg ...and more!
The LIMITED EDITION hardcover copy of the 30th Anniversary Stern coffee table book comes with, a special edition custom art dust jacket, a custom art slip cover, and signed by Gary Stern, Steve Ritchie, John Trudeau, George Gomez, and John Borg!
PaperFlock uses crowdfunding and crowdsourcing techniques to create unique books not available any other place in the world. PaperFlock is great books for the people by the people.
My name is Joseph Rubinstein, and I have founded startups in the past including Polite in Public inc, and Digital Bolex inc. I have also created two successful projects on this great platform, and backed many more. I am coming to Kickstarter this time to bring you a book about a subject I care deeply about. I have a pinball machine at home that my girlfriend and I play every day, and many of my trips are to places that have pinball museums or an active pinball culture.
My name is Dameon Guess, and I have been working in printing and publishing for many years. I am a longtime pinball fan and am excited to be working to tell the story of Stern Pinball. Please help us create this book celebrating the art and stories of Stern Pinball.
Base Level: A beautifully designed and printed 9”x12", 200 page hardcover coffee table book with an embossed cover and full color dust jacket
$50,000 - We are confident we can produce this book the right way at this funding level. We are excited to work with Stern and you, our backers to make this project a reality. A minimum run of 1,000 will make the printing affordable and gives us the option to print in the United States. We want to be extremely hands-on from start to finish, ensuring the highest level of quality.
Stretch Goal #1: The bigger the better!
$75,000 - This extra push will allow us to step up our print game and commit to adding a minimum of four additional full-color fold-out pages. This affords us a much larger canvas and empowers us to go BIG with some exciting graphics!
Stretch Goal #2: See how it’s made!
$100,000 - Did you know a modern Stern pinball machine has over 3,000 individual parts!?! Ever wonder how they go about packing so many great features and fun into a single title's playfield? At this funding level we will take you inside a pinball machine, adding translucent overlapping pages to reveal how a playfield is populated, layer by layer!
Stretch Goal #3: Enamel Pins!
$125,000 - We will create enamel pins based on the Keeping the Ball Alive graphic or the custom Zombie Yeti artwork! Everyone who orders at T-shirt level ($25) and above will get one for free!
Shipping will be charged after the Kickstarter ends based on actual shipping costs and is collected via Backerkit. This allows us to charge shipping fairly for all backers and avoid a 'one size fits all' mentality to shipping.
Below are shipping estimates for the book (estimated to be around 2lbs). These are just estimates. Costs may rise due to weight increase as more items are unlocked via stretch goals and add-on purchases you choose. This will be calculated by Backerkit after backer surveys are turned in.
USA - $13
EU (including UK) - $17.00
Canada - $17
AU - $19
Mexico - $19
Most other countries - $19
And finally, we are adding a rolled option for the 30th Anniversary poster. If you order one of the packages with the Zombie Yeti Print, which is rolled and shipped in a tube, we will also roll and tube your 30th anniversary poster!
