ANALOGBOOK - The photographer's notebook

£6,612

SUCCESS! We've reached our goal. But we still have time left to raise more funds. Every little bit more will go into making Analogbook that much better.

STRETCH GOAL #2 – £6000 (Upgraded Darkroom Analogbook) – REACHED!

If we can reach £6000 I plan to add additional design pages in the Darkroom Analogbook for this first printing. It will provide not only comprehensive printing notes but these extra pages will be dedicated to film development/processing.

NEW REWARD LEVEL – One-on-one photography workshop, TEAMWORK

We have reached our goal but have plenty of time to make our first stretch goal, so I'm offering a new reward tier: a one-on-one photography workshop. For any backer who is located in (or can make it to) London, UK in June. We'll test Analogbooks in the field, maybe even visit the printers to check out the process of making the notebooks, and spend some time getting generally overexcited about film photography. Backers will also get everything in the SHUTTERSMITH reward tier. Limited to 2!

STRETCH GOAL #1 – £5000 (Mix your formats) – REACHED!

By popular demand! If we can make it to £5000, all reward tiers featuring the triple packs will be able to choose the format they would like for each individual book not just one format per triple pack.

What is Analogbook?

Analogbook is the photographer's notebook.

Analogbook is a set of specially designed notebooks made specifically for professional photographers, artists, and photography students. A combination of the words "Analog" and "Logbook", they are a useful resource and celebration for all of those choosing to shoot film.

For anyone regularly employing analog photography and traditional darkroom printing, or just exploring it for the first time, Analogbooks provide the ability to easily record every piece of relevant photographic data. They help the professional archive a plethora of information that they can come back to at any time; whether it be navigating a long-term photographic project, or making a reprint in the darkroom that much simpler. They can help the photography student quickly learn the foundations of the craft, enabling technical self-assessment and a more efficient photographic practice. Analogbooks also provide photography instructors with clear information about the student's work in the field, studio and the lab, facilitating accurate evaluation of their technique and strengthening participation.

The Inspiration

As an artist who regularly uses the photographic medium, I was looking for a way to more accurately record my process. I love gathering data, looking back on notes from each exploration and each snap of the shutter. After a summer of shooting photographs for an upcoming exhibition, I noticed my standard notebook was filled with small scribbled logs of f-stops, shutter speeds, times of day, and more. Opening up my film folders I found countless sheets of paper with exposure and color correction notes. There had to be a better way to gather and store this information. There had to be a way to make this information more tangible, more valuable to my process and arts practice as a whole. Unfortunately I couldn't find an existing system that offered this, so I decided to design and make it myself, with the input of Kickstarter backers.

Why Kickstarter?

To make Analogbook the best possible photographic notebook means collaborating with the people who will be using it. I'm launching this project on Kickstarter not only to establish the Analogbook brand and enable the printing of the first run, but to also build a community of people who will help refine the notebooks. I want to work directly with you, the backers, sharing the designs, proofing process, and allowing for discussion and critique to fine-tune the layouts right up until printing. I want Analogbooks to be the most useful notebooks for the majority of photographers. Together we can make that happen.

The Analogbook System

The Analogbook system is simple and straightforward. There are three small notebooks for each common film format: 135 (35mm film format), medium (120 roll film, 6x4.5, square 6x6, 6x7, 6x9, etc), and large (sheet film, 4x5, 5x7, 8x10, etc). There is a larger notebook for traditional darkroom printing.

Each Analogbook is professionally printed using the lithographic process on 100% recycled, highly-writable 80gsm paper with a sturdy 300gsm cover. Each one features a template to record a comprehensive set of photographic data (f-stop, shutter speed, time, location, film ISO, camera/lens, and much, much more), and several blank pages in the back for additional notes or sketches. Printed on the interior front and rear cover are custom layouts of useful photographic charts and tables including Exposure Value combinations, Zone System information, development and printing guides, and much more. The different colors on the covers and spines make it easy to discern the different film formats when filed into an archive. In addition, the back cover doubles as an 18% reflectance grey card, helping you achieve accurate light meter readings. The complete details...

The Timeline

  • Mid-March: Conclusion of Kickstarter campaign. Designs and layouts refined from backer feedback during campaign.

  • March-April: Latest designs and layouts sent to backers for critique and discussion. I anticipate at least three rounds of revision on the layout and design.

  • April-May: The latest prototype versions printed and tested in the field. Building the Analogbook website and store.

  • May-June: Design and layout of Analogbooks finalized and sent to printers. Packaging prepared. Website completed.

  • Mid-June: First run of Analogbooks collected from printer and sent to backers.

Risks and challenges

Risk: Printer unable to complete order for the first run.

Solution: This is very unlikely, but if for some reason the printer is unable to complete the order I have a second printer who has already printed proofs and given a quote comparable to the first printer. Additionally I have contact with several other printers who would be able to carry out the job should the first two be unable to do so.
