Winner of Best New Australian Play, Sydney Theatre Awards
Directed by Audrey Sheffield
Deep in the night.
In a lonely motel room.
Somewhere in central Australia.
Six lost souls collide.
Isolated in dark and dangerous territory.
Haunted by the same tragic crime.
THE DARK ROOM exposes the startling mistreatment of the most vulnerable in our society, at the hands of those who are meant to protect them. This intricately layered, psychological thriller reminds us that no matter how far apart we are in distance and time, we are all responsible for each other's lives.
"Cuts right to the heart of humanity. Not to be missed." Brendan Cowell, Paperbark Ambassador, (Life of Galileo, Yerma, Game of Thrones)
Angela Betzien is a multi-award-winning playwright. Her work has been produced widely across Australia and internationally, to critical acclaim. She has been Playwright On Attachment at the National Theatre Studio, with THE DARK ROOM being her UK premiere.
From the playwright, "In Australia, we have a long and dark history of neglecting, abusing and forgetting the most vulnerable in our communities and it is this disturbing reality that formed one of the starting points for the play. I hope London audiences will find The Dark Room a haunting and illuminating theatrical experience"
Audrey Sheffield, founder and Artistic Director of Thinking Aloud, is a freelance theatre director, and, amongst others, has recently worked as an associate alongside Patrick Marber, Rupert Goold and Ian Rickson. We need your help!
In order to make this production possible, we need your help.
We have a wonderful creative team on board including Jemima Robinson (Designer - Winner of the Linbury Prize for Stage Design), Will Monks (Lighting Designer), Jon McLeod (Sound Designer) & Annie-Lunnette Deakin-Foster (Movement Director), as well as a fantastic cast.
Designs are drawn up and rehearsals are about to begin, but we need your support for this final stretch! Your donation will bring to life all we have created so far. It will enable us to pay for props, costumes, the building of the set, rehearsal space & venue hire.
We'd love for you to be a part of this exciting project and would be so grateful for any support you can offer.
Risks and challenges
We are incredibly passionate about the play and entirely dedicated to this production. We have been fundraising for almost six months and have raised enough money to get us to this far.
Having had no luck with public funding for this project, we're even more determined than ever to make this production happen but we need your support.
We are so excited to be presenting the UK premiere of this stunning play, and can't wait to share it with you. We just need your help for this final push.
