Paperbark Theatre Company will be presenting the international premiere of Vivienne Walshe's Griffin Award-winning play, THIS IS WHERE WE LIVE, at the 2014 Edinburgh and New York Fringe Festivals. These are two of the biggest arts festivals in the world and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to present this unique Australian play.
Date: 31st July - 12th August
Venue: Assembly, George Sq. Edinburgh Fringe
Date: 14th August - 25th August
This hour-long piece follows two outback high-school students, Chris and Chloe. He's a middle-class, wannabe poet; she's from the wrong side of the tracks. Together, they discover the possibility of escape from their dead-end small town hell.
Sam Strong, associate artistic director of the Melbourne Theatre Company, describes Vivienne Walshe's language as "one of a kind: muscular, vivid and instantly evocative... Vivienne plunges you headlong into the intense heart of teenage experience" and TimeOut Sydney said of the play "Wickedly funny, painfully raw and utterly captivating". THIS IS WHERE WE LIVE is a play that deserves an international audience.
WHO WE ARE!
Shaelee Rooke and Oliver de Rohan are two passionate Australian actors and theatre-makers who met while training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. After graduating, they created Paperbark Theatre Company (paperbarktheatre.com) with the aim of providing an international platform for brilliant, contemporary Australian theatre.
For their debut production, they teamed up with director Alec Fellows-Bennett, and designer and technician Will Monks. Playwright Vivienne Walshe completes this versatile and dynamic team.
WHERE WE ARE AT...
The play is fully rehearsed, the set is designed and built, the lights are plotted, it's all done! We self-funded a preview season in Bristol, and have used all proceeds to pay our fringe registration fees. But we need your help to take us to the next stage...
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
We would be grateful for any donation you can make to this project!
If you can't donate, we'd appreciate any help in getting the message out. Please share our campaign on Facebook and Twitter, and spread the word to anyone who might be interested!
WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO?
Touring a theatre show is expensive (and we're going all the way to Edinburgh AND New York!), but we have managed to keep costs as low as possible and find support "in kind" where we can. Our Kickstarter target is for the remaining costs as listed below.
And finally...we'd love to see you there! If you have any plans to be in Edinburgh or New York in August, please come and see us!
Risks and challenges
Despite the brilliance of contemporary Australian theatre, not nearly enough is produced internationally. THIS IS WHERE WE LIVE is a stunning play that is both intrinsically Australian, and also speaks easily to an international audience. Your support will help Paperbark take one small step towards putting more contemporary Australian theatre like this on the international stage. Also, by sharing our campaign you will be helping us promote this wonderful play!
It's well known that one does not get involved in the arts for financial reasons... This company and project were born out of the passion and ambition of two hardworking Australian actors. Finances were always going to pose problems but we have kept our costs as low as possible. While we have applied for grants and are in discussions with corporate sponsors, these sources are tenuous and unpredictable. This campaign is critical to the success of this show!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
