About

 

The Witch Cult is dark fantasy survival video game for PC about a group of refugees fleeing the fascist regime of an ancient witch coven. Armed with basic combat skills, stealth and a light source you must use your wits to overcome the challenges before you.

You play as the 'Unknowable' a protagonist who through concealment and ritual, has rendered themself unfindable by the Cult's magics. It falls to you to delve into ruins, face dangers and overcome horrors to find the supplies you and your fellow refugees need to flee the Cults sphere of perpetual night, through to daylight and freedom.

Game play is a single player experience based around reaction, timing and puzzle elements. Played in a pseudo oblique view, you explore hand drawn, sprite like dungeons and ruins across three visually distinct zones, each with their own flavour of foes and challenges.

Long ago, the cult discovered that their powers, like fear, grew in the dark. Thus via the night blooms they condemned us all to eternal night.

To truly escape The Witch Cult's influence it is necessary to flee the sphere of eternal darkness that empowers their magic. The refugees on board the Icarus came close to being the first to achieve this goal. At the last minute they ran afoul of rocks, forcing landfall on the peninsula of a distant, alien continent at the very edge of the Cults sphere of night.

Having failed to fully escape the darkness, the refugees are vulnerable. Confined to the wreck of the ship due to its protection and concealment magics, all their hopes now rest with the Unknowable.

It is they that must venture forth and secure the necessary materials in ruins, dungeons and abandoned towns, to convert the shattered hull of the ship into a transport capable of traversing land with its enchantments intact. In addition, the Unknoawable must map the least treacherous path across this unexplored continent so that the refugees might survive their travel through bands of ever decreasing darkness until they finally reach the safety of the light.


 

Blanketed by a darkness even deeper than within The Witch Cult capital of Covenhaugr. The fields of corruption are a rotting tribute to a civilisation swallowed by the expanding power of the cult.

The bones of their society play host to myriad forms of unwholesome growth, from toxic slimes to colossal fungi. A way must be found though this land hostile land if ever the refugees are to taste true freedom.


 

It is within these desolate lands that the first glimmers of natural light can be found. Only the merest hint, but enough to give hope to the refugees and halt the spread of the Fields of Corruption. But here at the edge of hope the dead are restless. Spirits wail and lament while monstrous insects inhabit and animate their physical remains, forever seeking, forever hungry.

 

Beyond the Restless Lands lies the Twilight Planes where the misguided Church of Rust sought to hold the The Witch Cult at bay through iron and blood. They failed and they died. But the constructs and wards of their industrial might march on, belching a constant stream of oily smoke that taints the land and renders the very rain acidic. These automata were created with the assumption that all who crossed their borders were servants of The Witch Cult. No one remains to tell them otherwise, and thus they are the final foe that must be overcome.

The world of The Witch Cult is not a safe one. Many obstacles must be overcome though a combination of might, agility and careful planning.


The majority of the game play will take place in dungeons, ruins and some surface areas, requiring the player to explore, overcome threats and collect materials. Areas that are accessible to the player will be illustrated by a map interface which will also serve to show the path through each zone uncovered by the player and any inherent risks along those paths. The base camp will show current materials gathered and projected risks associated with 'making a run for freedom' with your current supplies.


The mechanics of the game-play are deliberately kept simple, with complexity and difficulty arising from precision timing and understanding of enemy behaviours the combinations of which create 'puzzles'


The 'Unknowable's' movements are limited to diagonal axis constraints, as are the enemies and other threat elements of the game. This is done to tap into a old school puzzle/defined risk element of game-play. This simplifies fields of engagement and avoidance, making responses to situations limited but situationally strategic.


The 'Unknowable' can run, or crouch-walk with their light source enabled or disabled to give the player a set of binaries, light or dark, noise or silence, fast or slow. They can also attack in the direction they are facing.


Enemies will come in many forms. Their behaviours will also fall into several binaries that the player can memorise and thus predict and manipulate. Some enemies will be attracted to light or sound. Others repulsed. Some can be destroyed via melee while others merely avoided. Some generate their own light or sound, and others can extinguish yours.


To ensure that the majority of funds goes directly towards the game development itself, I have made the decision to restrict rewards to digital delivery types only. Thus there will be no money spent on postage, nor unexpected production costs. My time will then be spent focussing specifically on development and not on packing and mailing physical objects.

However I know that many people may enjoy receiving physical objects related to The Witch Cult and so they will be made available in the future through print on demand and other such avenues, just not as part of the funding of this KickStarter.

Live streaming Art Class

You gain access to a minimum of three live stream art tutorials, each 1-2 hours in length. I will demonstrate my personal artistic process and provide hints and tips on both art in general and on using programs such as Adobe Photoshop. I will also answer art related questions and thus hopefully give you a helping hand with your own art, or just explore the creative process for interested non artists. The creator experience

You receive a package of constructive art critique and mentoring, once a month every month for a year. Each package will involve an hour of me answering questions, critiquing your work, paint-overs, offering tailored advice and exercises based on your art and relative to your current skill level and experience. This can be skewed towards Illustration, Digital Fine Art, or Game Art.
In total, this equates to 12 full hours of one-on-one mentoring / tutoring and assistance and can be delivered via e-mail or social media platforms (such as the Facebook private messenger system).

 

 

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge is that I am a solo developer and must handle all tasks involved in creating the game.

I have extensive experience in the games industry (12+ years), as a game artist working on 2D sprite games for the GameBoy Advance through to 3D games for most of the major consoles, for games companies such as Halfbrick and Krome.
I have also been developing game mechanics and systems both as a hobby and as an occasional part of my work throughout that time.
I have spent the last 12 months full time getting the game to its current state which I thinks speaks to my dedication and desire to see this project through to fruition
About a third of the required art assets have already been completed and almost all of the concept art is already created. The rest of the art creation will be time consuming, but not artistically difficult.

The code side will be my most specific road block. Although I have a Advance Diploma in software development and have spent the last 3 months brushing up on my code basics, it remains my weakest area.
I hope to overcome this challenge by designing the game around simple to code systems and game mechanics, avoiding complex code heavy challenges such as online multiplayer.
However in an attempt to further mitigate this risk, I have set myself the goal of getting the bulk of the coding done within the first 4 months of the project. If I find myself not up to the task, I will swallow my pride and hire on a coder to finish the work.

I will also be upfront about any problems or delays as they may arise. In the year I have worked on The Witch Cult thus far, I have posted project updates almost every work day via social media. I intend to continue to do this for the length of the project, so you as a backer can see each element of the project as it move to completion, but at the same time I'll restrict spoiler based information, I promise!
