A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Redefining your desktop experience, Panther Alpha is a beautifully designed, tiny all-in-one for your home, office or school. Engineered to be a 4K media center and desktop replacement in one, Panther Alpha is powered by the latest Panther OS (based on Linux) and Android Marshmallow, bringing you endless of possibilities in an affordable, easy to use, tiny package!
Equipped with a 2GHz Quad Core Cortex A53 and 2GB of DDR3 Memory, the Panther Alpha outperforms popular developments boards such as the Raspberry Pi 3 and aims to be not only the most polished ARM powered Linux desktop experience yet but also the most complete Linux experience by tying hardware and software together.
Panther OS is a Linux based operating system designed for Panther Alpha, to help you accomplish more on your computer with less. With Panther OS, you get a familiar, reliable desktop experience that gives you access to your cloud-apps through Google Chromium and thousands of desktops apps such as Libre Office or Gimp (a popular Photoshop alternative) through our application’s store.
Freedom - Our library of thousands of open source applications are completely FREE. You can download and install them easily and they’re yours to keep forever. No registration. No licensing - for home, business, school.
Security - Backdoor viruses, malware, and other exploits are no match for Panther. A 2014 ESET report indicated there to be as many as 400 times the reported threats on Windows as there are on Linux, making the latter the more secure by quite some distance.
Compatibility - Panther OS seamlessly integrates the apps you know and expect from Mac and Microsoft alike. Things like Office compatibility, Exchange support and Google Apps are no afterthought. They’re built-in, along with all your other favourite programs.
Customization - No two Panthers are the same, and your machine is defined by you, just as it should be. You can easily change backgrounds, colors and fonts - even the entire desktop. The way your Alpha looks is entirely up to you. Whether it’s a Windows-inspired taskbar, or a familiar Mac layout, the Linux Desktop is extremely customizable right out of the gate, so you can make it your own from day one.
Efficiency - Panther OS uses up to 80% less memory than the average desktop computer. What usually takes around 1,000MB RAM after startup, Panther OS does with just 200MB. Even under full load, Panther rocks 17 times less energy compared to the Mac Mini.
We’ve designed Panther Alpha to be a reliable companion, wherever you go. With no moving parts, no fans, all-flash storage, a strong aluminum casing and a power consumption of only 2W to 4W, make the Panther Alpha the most efficient, all-in-one (Linux) desktop computer in the world. All that in a package not much bigger than your wallet.
Let’s put this in perspective: The average desktop uses between 80-260W and runs Windows and other licensed software from at least Microsoft (Office, Antivirus, Photoshop, ..), costing you hundreds, if not thousands in licensing fees and renewal. Panther Alpha on the other hand uses 2W-4W and runs Panther OS, giving you easy access to thousands of free open source applications that rival paid applications such as Microsoft Office and Photoshop, both in quality and usability.
Panther Alpha is a trusty companion for everyone, with at least two major Panther OS releases planned for our very first device and security fixes for up to 4 ½ years after each Panther OS release. Assuming you’re using the device for 5 years, that’s $17.8 per year or around $1.50 per month - less than a coffee.
We’ve taken a look at what our users truly need to stay connected and while Apple has since reduced their latest Macbook Pro to Thunderbolt 3 ports only, with adapters costing up to $40, Panther Alpha still features the real ‘thing’: Gigabit ethernet, HDMI 2.0, 2 x USB, microSD card reader, S/PDIF and the good, old 3.5mm headphone jack. If you’re going wireless, you can rely on 802.11 Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and even IR, for presentations or to control navigate your media from the couch.
Hook-up your Panther Alpha with a gorgeous TV, modern display or beamer and output up to 4K. Your eyes, friends and family will be breathless. Even if you’re laboured with a two-ton 1990s display unit, an $8 HDMI to VGA adapter from any back alley hardware store will turn it into the perfect output for your Panther Alpha.
And if the 32GB on-board flash storage isn’t doing it for you, you can easily expand via microSD, USB hard disk or NAS (Network Attached Storage), even shared from another Panther Alpha, for even more space to store your favourite music, photos, and videos.
Panther Alpha might not look like what you’d expect of a desktop computer, but looks can be deceiving. Beneath the gorgeous aluminium casing lies a powerful 2GHz quad-core 64 bit ARM Cortex-A53.
Panther Alpha packs a serious punch. Compared to the much-revered Raspberry Pi 3, it boasts twice the memory and runs around 48% faster. Not to mention that it’s designed with end users in mind. It’s the complete package.
The Alpha also enjoys far more connectivity options than the Intel Compute Stick, including GB LAN and 4K video, giving you considerably more bang for your buck.
In addition, we strive to make Panther Alpha the perfect piece of equipment, whatever your needs. Whether you plan to develop with, on or for the system, use another OS (Linux, Android, Unix) or turn your Alpha in a server, head over to our community and share your ideas.
If you’re still looking for stocking fillers, the Panther Alpha makes the perfect Christmas gift for that special someone. All our Kickstarter backers are eligible to receive their very own free digital gift certificate to give away when the big day arrives. At the end of the current campaign, you’ll be able to let us know which model you’d prefer to receive, and whether you’d like us to send out a Christmas gift certificate.
$200,000: If we can hit this goal together, we’ll be able to offer an exclusive aluminium black version of the Panther Alpha. You can select your color preference at the end of this campaign.
In June 2016, we had the idea to turn the Raspberry Pi 3 into a stable computer platform. Our chief goals were to:
Make Linux more accessible to the novice user
Educate people on the benefits of open source, especially in regards to security
Provide a complete, affordable platform
Meet the needs of the everyday majority and allow them to take back control
The results were a resounding success, and we began handing out units to friends, family, and business associates to take for a test drive. The Raspberry Pi 3 gave us a good idea of what the platform is capable of, but we needed more power and more memory. We were looking to build a device not only for developers, but also the end-users, and now it was much clearer how to achieve that.
We continued working on the Pi 3 but maintained the ambition to take it further. We began reaching out to investors and distributors, and soon raised the $12,000 we needed to get started on a platform of our own, and found a manufacturer that could meet the specs we desired. With a few high-quality samples in hand, we hired Aaron Sowry; an Embedded Software Developer with vast ARM and Linux experience. With his help, we were able to initiate the device and begin work on what later became known as ‘Panther OS’.
With your backing, we can continue working on the computing platform of the future and you will get one of the first - your very own, Panther Alpha - in fact, one of the first in history!
The initial release of Panther OS will bring a stable platform to first backers, but allows future updates to be dictated by your feedback. We strive to ensure the continued development of Panther OS, with more meaningful updates designed to enhance your experience.
Our backers will receive a developer kit along with their hardware. With the Panther OS SDK, you’ll get access to the kernel, most of the framework and more to give you the ability to develop, customize and built the future of Linux with us. For example, you can modify the kernel to support your favorite hardware peripherals, and the framework to customize certain features and look and feel of Panther OS.
We have pledges designed to specifically support work on the Amlogic S905:
Mainline Linux Kernel Support
“Early Access to Panther OS” backers get access to Panther OS beta builds, driver packages, and build script. They can use our work on drivers related to the S905 on their own devices with this chipset or to port other Linux OS distributions to Panther Alpha - you have completely control.
We’re a diverse group of designers, engineers, and entrepreneurs who have spent the last year honing the Panther Alpha into what we believe to be a revolution not only for Linux computing, but the rights of every user in the world today. Here’s the team behind this ambitious plan:
Panther OS, paired with Panther Alpha is our answer to what’s going on in the world: We're giving the power back to the user, with access to thousands of tested, completely free open source applications that don’t compromise on usability but save you real bucks. Powerful tools such as TOR and a built-in VPN client help protect your privacy online and the sensible, pre-configured Firewall and non-logging DNS shield you from hacking and hijacking. The portable design allows you take Panther Alpha everywhere, to use as your desktop, as a server or hooked-up to the TV, to serve your media.
We’ve taken away the headaches Linux can cause by providing a unified platform of hardware and software with integrated updates. Panther OS gives the power to choose what you share back to you: no mandatory sign-ups, secure software, and built-in tools to protect your privacy that are often left inaccessible to novices. We make computing much more efficient, with a highly-optimized OS that serves the majority of users. Your PC simply doesn’t need to be any bigger, nor does it need to be more expensive. The complete Panther platform will set you back no more than $100 with zero ongoing costs and even significant reductions to your energy bills.
The future looks bright. Following the conclusion of our Kickstarter campaign, we plan to launch Panther Alpha on Amazon and make it readily available to distributors worldwide. We’ll continue to perfect Panther OS with new point releases annually and full releases every two years. To subsidize new Panther OS point releases, we’ll manufacture more powerful ARM-based hardware, always with three key points in mind: lower energy use, affordability, and stability.
Our ultimate goal is to make Panther Alpha the recognized computing platform to meet the needs of the everyday user, and increase our reach which will result in further developer support and community benefits. Your support is not only a vote to make open source software more secure, more private, and more efficient, but also for your own freedom to use your computer however you please.
Let’s get the message out there! We want to put the Panther Alpha into the hands of ordinary computer users that stand to benefit from increased privacy, smarter energy consumption, and reduced operating costs. Share our campaign on Facebook and help us make Panther the go-to desktop PC for everyday use. Thanks for your support!
Risks and challenges
Any start-up’s biggest fear is their ability to manufacture their ideas, but we have already secured our first order in good faith. We’ve set up a dedicated team located within a half hour drive of our manufacturer so we can deal with any issues that may arise personally and in real time. Our team is made up of the most experienced professionals in the hardware manufacturing industry, and our expertise and proximity should mitigate any potential pitfalls before they can occur.
Following our Kickstarter launch, we plan to hire a few additional developers to help us answer queries and further enhance Panther OS. All work on new features and fixes will be fed back to the open source community, so Panther MPC supports Linux users around the world.
We already have a dedicated forum to address questions and concerns, and our technical staff are always available at email@example.com.
We’ve already taken precautionary steps to mitigate any shipment or processing problems. We will be be shipping globally via multiple distribution centers and our association with several experienced logistic partners helps us avoid any glaring issues with our processes and ensures your Panter Alpha reaches you without incident.
We’ve invested a lot of time to ensure Panther OS runs smoothly on Amlogic S905 ARM devices. Early access to Panther OS means you’ll be able to download and play around with our releases on your own hardware, even before we release it to the general public in Summer 2017. This hands-on experience also means you can help shape the direction of Panther OS by providing us with your feedback and establish Panther OS as the most stable, ARM-focused Linux Desktop.
