This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Mon, February 25 2019 5:58 PM UTC +00:00.
Introducing the Pangea Designs Prylobite!
The Prylobite is an evolution of our first Pangea Designs product and fan-favorite, the Pickpocket suspension clip/bottle opener. The Prylobite combines the convenience of our original keychain suspension clip, with the resourcefulness of a pocket knife, bottle opener, prybar, and bit driver into an ultra light, compact design that is sure to become an essential part of your EDC.
Produced using an S35VN supersteel blade and G10 fiberglass laminate handles, the Prylobite features precision machined components, a flat ground blade with fully chamfered edges, and is finished with a durable and attractive stonewash. The Prylobite packs elite level quality into every detail.
FRICTION FOLDER DESIGN : The Prylobite folding mechanism is based on the traditional "friction folder" knife design. Simple and effective, there is no lock or detent holding the blade open or closed, simply the friction tension of the knife pivot. Traditionally, the short extension off the back of the blade tang is used both for one-handed opening, as well as to prevent an open blade from closing, by applying thumb pressure along the handle spine. Our Prylobite design is unique in that we've incorporated multiple other useful functions into this tang extension.
SUSPENSION CLIP : The Suspension Clip function allows the Prylobite to effectively streamline your EDC keychain, rather than add cumbersome bulk. Hanging from a pocket edge, your keys lay conveniently inline with your pocket for easy retrieval. For a quick place to stash them, the Prylobite effortlessly slides onto a beltloop.
SAFE KEYCHAIN CARRY: The Prylobite has an innovative attachment point that locks the blade closed when attached to a keychain, and prevents the blade from accidentally opening. The attachment point is designed to work with Nite Ize S-Biner MicroLock, or size #0.5 or #1 steel S-Biner.
BOTTLE OPENER : The Prylobite features the same efficient, but tiny bottle opener claw geometry of other bottle opener products we have produced. This geometry was specifically developed to be a 'first try' cap lifter, while occupying minimal real estate on our EDC items.
PRYBAR : A prybar tool is one of those EDC items you don't realize how often you will find useful, until you have one in your pocket. How often have you been tempted to use a knife blade to pry something, even though you (hopefully) know better? We've incorporated this functionality into the tip of the tang extension to save you from the embarrassment of a broken knife tip.
1/4" WRENCH : The hexagonal hole at the end of the tang extension can be used to get a grip on 1/4" nuts, or even some extra leverage on a hex driver bit.
COMPACT SIZE: Weighing as little as only 4 quarters, and shorter than many car keys, the Prylobite will feel right at home dangling from your keys, and will go virtually unnoticed until a task requires it. Furthermore, the unassuming size and lack of locking blade make it an excellent choice in some localities with more restrictive knife law.
DEVELOPMENT & PRODUCTION : We have been working on the Prylobite for several years now, and the design has undergone multiple revisions and improvements along the way. The concept began as an extension of the functionality of our Pickpocket design, and we combined our favorite aspects of the Pickpocket with our love of EDC knives. Through explorations of sketches, CAD models, crude prototypes, as well as discussions with multiple manufacturers, we eventually refined the Prylobite into the multi-function configuration we present to you now.
Ultimately, we decided on S35VN for the blade steel, which is known for its superior edge retention, corrosion resistance, durability and ease of sharpening. S35VN has proven to provide the necessary durability for the prybar/clip features for the type of usage the knife is intended, while the edge retention remains superb.
G10 is a fiberglass laminate material similar to carbon fiber, and was chosen as the handle material due its light weight, high strength, durability, and grip texture. While other colors may be an option later, black was chosen as our first offering, due its classic appearance.
We have been quoted a production time of 90-100 days. Once received, we should expect to be able to begin shipping rewards out to our backers immediately.

We have a few Stretch Goals in mind to be unlocked at various stages in funding. At this point, the most important thing to push this project forward is spreading the word. YOU can help not only by sharing our project with your friends or on knife/EDC web forums and Facebook groups, but also by engaging our Instagram/Facebook posts! The more engagement our posts get, the more likely Facebook and Instagram are to show our posts to new viewers. And the more fresh eyes that see our Prylobite, the more people are likely to come back the project! So tell your friends, give us a follow, share those posts, comment on those photos, and lets take it to $25k to unlock Nite Ize S-Biners for everyone!
Q: Can I pledge for multiple rewards?
A: Yes! Please just add the total of each different pledge tier to your pledge. For example, if you wish to pledge for 3 Prylobites, pledge $170 (for the "pair o' prylobites tier) + $99 (for the standard Prylobite tier). PLEASE NOTE: Because Kickstarter would not have a way to adjust the remaining quantities of the 'limited quantity' tiers (such as the early birds), please only add pledge totals from the non-limited-quantity tiers. As such, unfortunately it is not possible to pledge for multiple early bird rewards.
Q: These multiple pledges are confusing, what if I screw it up...
A: We plan to use Backerkit to collect backer surveys, shipping addresses, reward selections, etc. This 3rd party system will allow you to add more funds & choose additional rewards. If you pledged too little during the Kickstarter, it will ask you to add the difference. If you pledged too much, you will have a credit that can be used towards other Pangea Designs products. You may even simply wait until you receive the Backerkit survey to add additional reward items, if you like.
Risks and challenges
The factory we have chosen to produce the Prylobite has a well established reputation for producing top-of-the-line knives for the EDC community. We have be nothing but impressed with their abilities and communication thus far, and they have provided us with a flawless prototype using the same machinery and manufacturing methods that that will be used to make the production knives. We have no concern about their ability to produce the knife. As with all projects, there is always a small risk of timeline delays due to unforeseen challenges or complications, but due to the relatively simple nature of this knife, and the production-ready nature of our prototype, we expect things to go smoothly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
