Spleen is a 2D Action RPG & Life Sim hybrid about being torn between the demands of adult life and the nostalgia of being a carefree kid. It's a mix of Persona style social gameplay with Kingdom Hearts like action in a 2D world, with influences including Final Fantasy 9 and Dragon Ball.

We combine traditional 2D animation and hand-painted watercolor backgrounds to give the game a unique nostalgic look. Although we're not against using some tricks of technology from time to time!

Play as Johann, a disenchanted young man feeling the weight and responsibilities of his life slowly breaking his spirit. His work is crushing, his dreams are fading and he realizes that adulthood isn't really what he was hoping for.

But when he gains the ability to enter the Kid World and fight his problems as his childhood self, he might just find a way to make life worth exploring again!

Choose what happens in Johann's daily life in the Adult World and juggle his needs as he tries to get through all the hurdles that life throws at him. When he's worn out and can't take anymore, enter the Kid World to fight back the Spleen, a malevolent force that grows from his melancholy and search for sources of inspiration and hope.

  •  Spend time with friends, lovers and family. Improve your relationships to help Johann fight the Spleen.
  •  Earn Power Cards, sources of new abilities and strength for Kid Johann.
  •  Find Vignettes that contain memories and stories that will guide Adult Johann towards hope.

Target Platforms & Languages

We're a very small team, so we will bring the game to PC first and then target consoles afterwards. We can't promise specific consoles yet since we're waiting for approvals, but backers will be able to pick from any of the confirmed platforms once we get closer to release.

The game will be available in English, French and German.  More languages may become available later, depending on how the campaign goes.

There are many ways to spend time in the Adult World. Every activity has an impact on Johann's well being so you'll need to pick wisely.

  •  Relax, take care of yourself. Well, when you have time that is.

However things might not always go according to plan.

And life is full of stressful things and hassles that pile up.

Just don't turn your back on those who are trying to help you.  

It's great to be a kid again! As a child, Johann is far from helpless. Relive what it was like to imagine being a hero from Saturday morning cartoons!

Power Cards

Ever wished that those trinkets you collected as a child could grant you special powers? Earn special Power Cards and mix and match them together to improve your abilities in the Kid World.

Food

Food has an important place in both of Spleen's worlds.

In the Adult World, cooking and sharing meals with someone is a great way to improve your relationships. Meals are a great opportunity to socialize and get to know others better.

You'll also be able to unlock your favorite childhood foods and use them as restorative items in the Kid World.


Enemies in the Kid's World are infused with a mysterious malevolent energy known as the Spleen. It grows from adult Johann's melancholy and empowers his negative emotions.

But as a kid, he can absorb the Spleen after defeating them and burn it up to help increase his own strength and restore some of Adult Johann's mental health.


Enemy Clans

Many different clans inhabit the Kid World, representations of Johann's emotions and fears, twisted and perverted by the Spleen.

Each clan includes at least 3 enemies and a mini-boss.


The Sadness Clan

The Sadness clan is a tearful lot, lost in their grief and lashing out at those who would comfort them. They've been sad for so long, they have forgotten why they cry in the first place. 

The Stress Clan

Members of the Stress clan are jittery and hard to pin down. They may seem small and innocent, but in great numbers they become overwhelming.

Vignettes

These special memories and stories will help Johann to better connect with his friends and remember the hopes and dreams he had as a child. They will unlock new scenes and interactions in the adult world, impacting Johann's relationships and making the story progress.

When you're a kid, everything is possible! Johann, on the other hand, is an adult who ended up being dragged along by his life. He is stuck in a routine without much fantasy or originality, pulled along by the demands of his work at the foundry and all the daily hassles of life.

The only thing that brings him a bit of happiness is the occasional time spent with a friend, but even then all he can see is how much more alive they seem. Making plans and chasing dreams... Didn't he also hope for something more at one point? Maybe that just got worn down along the way.

But then this weird cat-thing that calls itself Splenetik showed up and the kid inside him finally woke up. Maybe there's a way to fight back against this melancholy after all...

Improve relationships to gain new powers and choices

Spend time with other characters and build strong relationships to help Johann in both worlds.

Johann is a depressed mid-thirties worker in a foundry. Even if he finds the flow of lava marvelous, he can't seem to care about much these days. He used to dream of traveling the world and studying volcanoes, but that dream got lost along the way...

Clementine is a headstrong young woman, captain of "Le William", her own fishing boat. Passionate about the sea, like her father, she wants to honor him and follow in his footsteps as a reckless fisherman. Sweet but strong, gentle but severe at work. A self-made entrepreneur, she likes to do things herself and her way.

Raphael is a black belt judoka with a habit of getting into trouble. Despite recurring bad luck, he's a happy go lucky florist and a great cook, always wearing a smile. Nothing seems to get him down and he's always there when someone he loves needs an ear.

Splénétik is a mysterious creature that shows up out of nowhere one day and grants Johann the power to enter the Kid World.  Don't be fooled by their cuteness, they're very up front and can be pretty rough... But this is probably the best way to get through to Johann.

The art in Spleen is a combination of different styles inspired by the great Disney classics and feature films from Studio Ghibli. The Kid World is full of hand-painted watercolors, lending the game a dreamy, nostalgic feel. The characters are digitally animated frame by frame. This great control allows us to create beautiful and dynamic images. 


The Adult World, on the other hand, is entirely digital and done in a more realistic style. It is more influenced by European comics and manga.

 The game will be available on PC first and we intend to target consoles afterwards. Apart from the additional work and time required to make console versions, we don't anticipate any particular issues as we've done it before, but we can't promise anything specific for now as we're waiting for approvals. Backers will be able to choose from any of the confirmed platforms in a post Kickstarter survey.

 As backers, you are important in bringing this game to life, so we want to thank you by including you in our credits.

 With inspirations ranging from the Final Fantasy series, Metal Gear and Nier:Automata, the digital soundtrack for the game is sure to be a treat for your ears! Listen to the sample track at the top of the page if you haven't already!

 The digital artbook will contain around 50 pages of sketches, concepts, work in progress art and beautiful drawings, with notes and comments by the team.

 An original watercolor portrait of one of the characters in the game. Pick which character you'd like and Yann will paint you something nice. Signed by the artist!

 Backgrounds and props in the Kid World are first painted in batches before being scanned to be integrated into the game. Similar to old school animation cels, you can now own one of these unique artifacts of production for yourself. Once we're done with them, of course!

 Help us design some food for the game. Cooking and eating together has always been a strong bonding experience for people, be it a simple affair or an elaborate feast. Choose a recipe to include in the game, either as a meal the adults can share together or a restorative item the kid can use. It will be named after you or however you'd like and you'll get to keep some of the original design drawings that were made during production.

 Power Cards are the source of kid Johann's abilities. Work with us to design one of these cards and help turn him into a stronger hero. Together we'll figure out its visuals and effects. You'll get to keep some of the original design drawings that were made during production.

 Enemies in Spleen are based on a strong emotion. You'll get to pick from one of the available emotions and we'll work together to design the visuals and behavior of the enemy. You'll also be able to name the enemy you helped create and you'll get to keep some of the original design drawings that were made during production.

 A large part of the experience in the Adult World is interacting with other characters. Work with us to design one of the NPCs (non-playable character) and define their visuals and their backstory. Then we'll setup a simple story arc involving them. You'll also be able to name the NPC you helped create and you'll get to keep some of the original design drawings that were made during production.

*As with all design rewards, these are subject to our final approval and we may have to make changes to fit the game.

 Mini-bosses are strong enemies that can appear in the Kid World from time to time. Like other enemies, they are based on a strong emotion, but they have more complex behaviors and are harder to defeat. You'll get to pick from one of the available emotions and we'll work together to design the visuals and behavior of the mini-boss. You'll also be able to name the mini-boss you helped create and you'll get to keep some of the original design drawings that were made during production.

 Get a commissioned watercolor portrait of the person of your choice, with the details to be determined between Yann and you. This is your chance to get a unique artistic piece made in Yann's colorful style.

 Get a special one of a kind piece of art. Well, three pieces actually! You will get a unique watercolor triptych of the three main characters. 

 Come attend the launch party in Montreal once we get to the final release of the game. You'll get to celebrate and hang out with the team and some of our close friends and supporters.

Pamplemousse Games was founded by Alex and Yann, two indie games veterans in need of some change and looking to start a project together. When we first met, we somehow started talking about some childhood memories and this snowballed into an avalanche of reminiscence, even causing us to remember lots of things we had not thought about in years.

We talked about this with others and each time the experience was renewed. We realized that nostalgia is a powerful thing indeed and that it made a great catalyst for sharing experiences. So being game makers, we decided to make a game about it! We didn't just want a game that felt nostalgic though, we wanted to make a game about nostalgia. 

Yann is an artistic Swiss army knife. He has worked for over 12 years in the games industry as a 2D and 3D animator, concept artist, UI artist, illustrator and artistic director. His colorful visual style and cute characters are sure to turn heads. He is always trying out new things and has learned painting watercolors specifically for this project. His love for Dragonball knows no bounds. 

Alex has held major roles on over 30 projects in the past 13 years, shipping more than 20 of them, on almost all the recent consoles and platforms. Working for various game studios like Behaviour, Trapdoor, Minority Media and Typhoon Studios, he's had a hand (or both!) in programming, design, management, production and some of his programmer art has even made it into shipped games (wait... is... is that a good thing?). Really likes pie and adding silly things to projects he's working on.

Neha is a video game composer, arranger and pianist, currently pursuing a Masters degree in Composition for Screen at the University of Montreal and the Conservatorio G.B Martini in Bologna, Italy. As an arranger, she is currently working with Materia Collective on their upcoming album. She is an avid video game plushie collector, a self-proclaimed Crash Team Racing child prodigy and pun enthusiast. 

Maximilien is an avid interactive audio designer for games and VR. He currently works as a Product Expert at Audiokinetic. He has worked on a plethora of projects including: Time Machine VR, mobile smash hit Pewdiepie’s Tuber Simulator, the soundtrack of Resident Evil VII and contributions to the audio of Blue Manchu's upcoming title : Voidbastards. He is a frequent industry lecturer and founder of the Interactive Audio Montreal meetups.


Social Media

Spleen is an unusual game, mixing several different genres. It touches on difficult themes like burnout, depression, anxiety and questioning your place in life, while still trying to be optimistic, charming and exciting. That contrast makes it difficult to explain what makes the game special in a really short manner.

Kickstarter is an amazing platform for people who are passionate and curious and we're not only hoping to find funding, but also to build a community that will help us create a better game through sharing and feedback. Spleen is at its core a game about sharing experiences, so it felt like a natural fit. We've long talked about developing more openly, but we've never been in a position to try it before. We want to make an awesome game, but we also want to share that experience.

Up to now we've been developing using our own savings and by doing freelance contracts, but we need funds to continue putting our full attention on this project. So far we've built a lot of the core systems and a pretty advanced prototype of the mechanics of the Kid World. We've also finished establishing our process for the visuals, so we're at a point where we mostly need to start churning out content. Lots of content.

We estimate that we can finish the game as we envision it in around two years with our current team and a few extra contributors on contracts here and there. Apart from the rewards and various fees, our initial funding goal would give us around a year's worth of development. We feel this is the bare minimum for us to release a decent and fun experience, that we could then continue to build upon by adding more content after the initial release. We will be pursuing other sources of funding to allow us to deliver even more content and possibly speed up development, but we will only accept partnerships that do not compromise our creative independence. 

Risks and challenges

Even though this is our first title as Pamplemousse Games, we've been making games professionally for over 12 years, so we know that making games is pretty hard. And making personal, emotional games even more so.

It's entirely possible that we'll figure out that some things don't work like we'd hoped or aren't as fun as we expected. Some things will likely change, others will be cut or replaced, but's that part of iterating on the design and execution and we've been through that many times before. We've also designed the game so that there are few technical hurdles.

The main risks are mostly about being able to create enough content with a small team. But we're building the game in a way that is easy to scale up or down, depending on how much funding we're able to secure and how fast things progress as we build the game. We also have backup plans in case it takes longer than expected; we're setup to do contract work on the side and there are several interesting funding sources that can become available to us if we have a successful Kickstarter campaign. We also have friends and contacts in the industry who can help us out and we often ask for their advice.

We've previously shipped games on most of the existing modern platforms, so we've been through that process before. We've also chosen to use Unreal Engine 4, a solid multi-platform engine that we've been working with for years. So we're confident that we have all the resources we need to tackle any technical issues that may arise.
