About this project
Tuesday, December 10th — We’ve decided to cancel our campaign to refocus our efforts on continuing to spread the word about Rumrunners and start exploring alternative funding options. We’d like to thank everyone for their support and feedback during our campaign. If you’d like more details and future information, please check the update section.
Rumrunners is a game of deception and intrigue. At the start of the game, players are secretly divided into two groups (think Mafia, The Resistance or Werewolf). Bootleggers are working to keep the town of Dry Gulch supplied with alcohol. However, federal agents have recruited informants from within the distilling operations.
Bootleggers triumph by avoiding informants while successfully delivering moonshine. Informants succeed by infiltrating those deliveries and making the town run dry.
Rumrunners is a digital board game for your smartphone or tablet. Unlike other mobile games, you play Rumrunners face-to-face with your friends. It plays six to eleven people and lasts between twenty minutes and an hour.
After each player is secretly assigned a role, the first week of the game begins. Every week, the town consumes a varying amount of booze and the rumrunners have the opportunity — and civic duty— to keep the town supplied. They do so by electing a team of players to make a delivery.
The more players who go on the delivery, the more barrels they ship, but with every player added, the risk of including an informant grows. If an informant is selected they have the option to tip off the police and cause the shipment to be raided.
If, at the end of any week, the town has run out of alcohol, then the informants win. However, if the bootleggers can keep the town supplied over the entire game, they are victorious.
Over the course of the game, the bootleggers use their powers of persuasion and deduction to ferret out the informants, while the informants balance blending in and alerting authorities.
Rumrunners will be an application for both iPhone/iPad and Android devices that will allow a group of people to play the game. Rather than having to deal with remembering to bring a physical game, setting it up, and finding all of the pieces at the end of the night, players would simply get the app and join your Rumrunners game within seconds. And for those without a smartphone handy, there will also be a desktop component that will allow anyone to play using their computer. We're open to developing for other platforms as well, as long as there is demand for it.
By making Rumrunners a digital board game, we can enable features and functionality that otherwise would be tedious or impossible to have in a traditional board game. Your device assumes the role of moderator and performs the monotonous tasks that can bog down a conventional game.
It handles randomness, timing and compartmentalizing information so you can enjoy the fun part — the game. Rumrunners doesn’t rely on any physical pieces, so you can take it and play it anywhere.
A single Rumrunners account allows you to host a game for your friends — they don’t have to buy anything! All they need to access your game is their smartphone or tablet. If they don’t have one, don’t worry, because they can even play on a computer!
In addition to the basic roles, each player is assigned a character with a unique ability to influence the game. These abilities are used in secret to either help or hinder the bootleggers. Since player identities are hidden, each game takes surprising twists.
Here are a few of the characters in the game along with some concept art:
We have a variety of characters that we'll be revealing throughout the campaign. Check back soon for more updates!
We’ve done extensive playtesting on a wide variety of mechanics starting with variations to streamline the voting phase and extending to goals and win conditions new to traitor games (such as supply management and a score-based win condition) .
We’ve built prototype apps to try out features that are tedious to mimic with a physical tabletop version, like real-time anonymous polling.
As soon as this campaign reaches our goal, we can get started right away on building the full digital game. The $50,000 will help to cover some of our costs for having our team of developers, project strategists, and experienced designers build the game. Additionally, it will enable us to continue working with our artist to produce detailed graphics for the characters and UI in full color.
We are committed to having an early release for backers by June of next year, and are optimistic that we can beat that goal. In the meantime, we're excited to offer some really amazing rewards, as shown below. Additionally, you can also check out our print-and-play prototype to get a taste for what's in store.
We know that Rumrunners is a great game — but we have many ideas to make it even better: additional characters, new game modes, game analytics, etc. If the campaign is successful, we will continue to expand the Rumrunners experience.
Palomino Labs is a group of software developers who also happen to enjoy gaming. While we enjoy games of all sorts, some of our favorites are games with secret traitors, like Mafia, Werewolf and The Resistance. However, we kept having problems with people accidentally revealing their cards (hi Zeke!), messing up their votes, and generally arguing in circles.
As we started tinkering with ways to improve these games, we realized that we could solve a lot of the problems and annoyances we were facing with software. We're hoping you're also interested in exploring what software can do to improve and augment traditional game nights.
As product people, we know that it’s important to have an audience before building a product. A fully-funded Kickstarter campaign will validate that we’re not the only ones who want to play Rumrunners and allow us devote ourselves full-time to making it a success.
Risks and challenges
We started Palomino Labs to use our expertise in planning, building, and deploying software products to help companies struggling to deliver high-quality software on time. We are confident in our ability to release an amazing experience on schedule.
The biggest challenge for this project is meticulously balancing gameplay. While our play testers enjoy it greatly, we are still fine-tuning elements of the gameplay to make Rumrunners perfect. We're inviting you, our backers, to participate in beta testing when the digital version is ready. We need you to help make this game live up to its full potential!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
