About

Welcome to Odyssey: Temple Valley. A card-based adventure game for 1-4 players. The game is set in a mythical world as society takes a hard blow from plague and famine. You've heard the stories about the temple at the end of the valley and want to seek enlightenment there - and escape from the hardships of your life.

Getting to the temple requires you to journey across to the end of the valley and face whatever trials you encounter, starting with nothing but the clothes you stand in, collecting what you can on the way.

The Gate into Temple Valley
The Gate into Temple Valley

Mostly everything you do impacts your Karma, increasing or decreasing it. Defeat an aggressive creature - your karma increases. Pick a fight with and defeat a humble beggar, your Karma decreases and can go negative.

The temple doesn't let just anyone in. You must achieve sufficiently high Karma to get in. The first player to do so wins the game.

But things are never just that simple. The world exists on two planes. The World Above - the mortal world, and the World Below - a dark and twisted mirror of the World Above.

The Gate in the World Below
The Gate in the World Below

Both Worlds have a valley with a temple at its end. The World above has the Temple of Light, the World Below has the Temple of Shadows. You need enough positive Karma to enter the Temple of Light and enough negative Karma to enter the Temple of Shadows. Entering either one will win the game.

Setting up

Odyssey: Temple Valley uses cards to create the Valley in the world above and the world below. Three cards are kept out of each of the two location decks (The Gate, The Stone Circle and The Temple) and the rest are shuffled. The Cards are laid in two identical layouts - the Gate at the bottom, the Temple at the top then between 4 and 12 cards in the middle for each layout all laid face down, except for The Stone Circle which should be added in the same place in each layout and should be face up.

The Discovery and Encounter decks for the World Above and the World Below are shuffled and placed face down on the outside of their layouts.

The player(s) start on The Gate in the World Above - stand the player pieces on that card, and you'll also need the red and blue six-sided dice that comes with the game.

Playing the game

Everything you need to know is in the cards. For example, each location card has a number for Discovery, a number for Encounter and any special instructions. More about how you use them below.

Play happens in turns and goes clockwise.

Each player has a choice of what to do:

Move to another location - You can move North / South / East / West into a Location Card. If it isn't turned over, turn it over. Either way, roll the red and blue dice.

If the blue dice is less than or equal to the number on the Location Card, then you take the top card from the Discovery pile and can keep what you get - if you have more than 3 discovery cards, you'll need to discard one to the bottom of the discovery pile in the world you are currently in.

If the red dice is less than or equal to the number on the Location Card, then you encounter the creature or character listed on the bottom of the card. Find the correct Encounter Card in the Encounter Deck.

Passive encounters will not attack you unless you attack them. These are often characters who can help you - read their card to find out how.

Aggressive encounters will attack you on sight and will take the first combat round. We've created a simple combat system that allows items, charms and special combat action cards to change your abilities.

You can see a video showing how combat works below.

Stay in this location and meditate - doing this will heal you a little and increase your Karma a little. While you stay in the same location you must roll for Encounters, but you can only roll for Discovery on the first time you enter a location - if you go away and come back, you can roll for Discovery in a location you've already visited.

How does combat work?

The combat rules are simple and based on the red and blue dice being thrown together. The red dice is for the attacker. The blue dice is for the defender. The attackers and defenders stats are added to these values and if the attacker scores greater or equal to the defender, then the defender takes the damage - the video shows how this works, step by step.

Discovery cards

Discovery cards are items, charms, weapons and abilities. Players can hold up to three of them at any one time. They can be used during a players turn and during combat.

Some cards provide special abilities, including the ability to move between The World Above and the World Below. When you transfer between Worlds, you appear in the other world on the corresponding card to the one you started from.

The Two Worlds

The route open to all players to transfer between Worlds are the Stone Circles. You can transfer to the Stone Circle in the other World by sacrificing some of your Karma. Getting from the World Below back to the World above costs a little more (it's always harder to get back into the light).

There are also two Discovery cards that provide an ability to go in one direction at no cost, and one Discovery card that allows the player to move freely between the worlds.

Taking the dark path

Your journey doesn’t have to end at the Temple of Light. You can choose to take the dark path an aim for the Temple of Shadows, but that isn’t the only reason to head to the World Below. The greatest Karma increases can be gathered Below along with discovering items that are unique to that world.

Winning the game

The first player to get enough of the right kind of Karma (positive or negative) and get to the Temple of their choice wins.

Project status

So, this is where we are:

All the cards in the game as they stand at the moment - all will have full colour artwork when complete
All the cards in the game as they stand at the moment - all will have full colour artwork when complete

There are approximately 82 tarot sized cards in the game, 68 will have colour artwork in the completed game.

  • Artwork for all the card backs are done.
  • Line art for 58 of 68 cards are complete, with 20 of 68 colourised. The plan is for all cards to be full colour artwork.
  • The rules are written and the game has been play-tested approximately 35 times and counting.
  • We've got final layouts for all the cards print-ready, the artwork element just needs to be updated as the full-colour versions are completed.
  • We've got suppliers lined up for all the elements of the game (cards and card box, player pieces, dice, box for it all to go in).

Please note: all the photographs you see here are take from the artwork and layouts as they stand at the moment. All cards will be full colour when complete and some minor elements of the design may change.

What will your pledge help us do?

We want to complete the game and get the first batch produced, the minimum funding we need for the to do this is £2,880. Which is based on a run of 144 units of the game.

This funding will cover:

  • Completion of the outstanding artwork assets.
  • Printing the cards and packaging.
  • Purchase of the dice and player pieces.
  • Assembly ready for shipping.

Fulfilment and shipping

We will be charging shipping after the Kickstarter concludes based on the actual costs incurred to pack and ship your rewards. Your pledge amount does not include shipping costs, these will be charged later. We will collect this via our pledge manager after the campaign ends.  We feel that this approach is the most fair to all backers rather than just having flat rate shipping where some backers will overpay and some will underpay for shipping.

Following is a list of estimates for shipping, please note that these are only estimates and include order processing costs.   These estimates do not include any VAT or Customs TAX unless you are in the EU.  If you are elsewhere, you may have to pay import or other taxes depending on the laws of your country.   You are solely responsible for these charges.

Approximate Postage Costs

  • UK £7.50
  • Europe £17.50

Who are we?

My name is Alan. I've been playing adventure and role-playing games one way or another for the past 35 years. I've been working as digital lead in a communications agency for over 25 years and I'm also a keen artist, photographer and film maker.

Since November 2018 I've been working on a card based adventure game. This came out of the desire to make a game that could be played by smaller groups or solo players, and had some of the common elements of role-playing and board games, and had variation built-in so it wasn't the same every time you played.

I wanted something that we could play as a family sized group, but would also still work for 1 or 2 players.

I've spent the past 6 months putting the concept together, building mock-ups, doing the artwork and print layouts as well as plenty of play-testing.

My partner and I are working together to bring this to production.

We have a genuine love of making things, a love of playing games and particularly of family and friends games night.

There's something special about how a group of people are together, sat round a table, playing a game - and that's something that's lost when the game is on the other side of a screen, so, we believe in creating real-world experiences we can share and enjoy. Odyssey: Temple Valley is exactly that.

Pale Heretic Limited is our company registered in the UK and has a number of game projects in development that are set to go into production after the completion of Odyssey: Temple Valley.

Risks and challenges

This project may be effected by changes in pricing for the printed elements of the project - we have two suppliers identified who can deliver the cards and card boxes, one of whom is in the UK. All the other packaging and game pieces are sourced from UK suppliers.

From a timelines perspective there is a risk associated with the time required to complete the outstanding art elements. We've allowed a contingency to ensure this doesn't present a problem for the overall delivery.

This may be our first Kickstarter, but this isn't our first project - we've been working in the creative industries for over 20 years and have successfully delivered projects of a wide range of types.
