Catherine Sharp is a gifted tech support guru with a consulting job for one of the better third-party support firms in Sin City. She's got a tuxedo tomcat and a sweet old landlady willing to knock the rent off if Cat is able to fix a water heater here and there. Not too shabby as far as lives go. Unless your soul belongs to a trickster god.
Her boss charges her with the task of solving the murder of a woman with a strange, cloudy past. As Catherine digs deeper into the mystery surrounding her death, more problems seek her out. A skeevy ferromancer is convinced Cat has some veil he's looking for, and he's willing to kill to get his grimy hands on it. Then there's Marius to worry about. The satyr's back in town with his own agenda. But should Catherine trust him?
Hi, I'm Jamie Wyman: author, free-lance editor and Pajamazon. In 2010 I started writing a series I call Etudes in C# centered on Catherine Sharp. The first novel in this series, WILD CARD, was picked up and published by Entangled Edge in November 2013. It has enjoyed rave reviews from readers, book bloggers and other authors. All of their comments end the same way, "When can I read the next book?"
While that next book (UNVEILED) is finished, there is a problem getting it into the hands of those expectant fans. Unfortunately, Entangled has decided not to publish further books in this series. After conversations with my agent, editors at other publishing houses and several devoted fans, I have decided that the best way to get UNVEILED into the hands of readers will be to self-publish the book.
What does self-publishing entail?
There is a stigma to self-publishing. That somehow these books are not as good as those traditionally published. Part of this is because the capital needed to make a book can be daunting. Artwork, editing, legal/set-up fees. They add up quickly. And frankly, not everyone has the resources to put together a store-quality book.
It's not enough for me to take the Word file and make it available through Amazon. I want to produce a book that is indiscernible from those you would find at the brick-and-mortar store down the street. Using crowd-sourced funds I will:
- Purchase the necessary copyright, ISBN and barcodes, as well as ensure proper formatting and conversion of the manuscript.
- Team up with WILD CARD's editor Danielle Poiesz for a full series of edits to bring the manuscript up to a level that is beyond reproach.
- Commission a stellar cover by a professional fantasy artist.
- Build an advertising/marketing campaign to promote UNVEILED including a blog tour, ads and promotional swag (bookmarks, key chains and the like).
- Utilize not only Amazon and Smashwords to provide DRM-free digital copies available across all platforms, but also use CreateSpace to offer readers Catherine Sharp in print for the first time. Raised funds will go toward the printing and shipping of trade paperback books.
- With the printed copies, we can enjoy the benefits of CreateSpace's Extended Distribution options and take Cat Sharp into new territory: bookstores and libraries. Everyone will be able to enjoy UNVEILED unplugged.
How will you make UNVEILED better than WILD CARD?
One of the perks of self-publishing is being at the helm in all areas. While I appreciate Entangled and all the publisher did for me, there were a few things that fans thought could have been better.
For starters, many readers didn't like that WILD CARD was digital only. As mentioned above, if we successfully fund this project, UNVEILED will be available in trade paperback print as well as DRM-free digital. Readers will have the choice.
In the case of UNVEILED I will be free to select my own cover artist, be an active part of the design process and offer a store-quality cover.
By self-publishing UNVEILED, I will be in control, without worry that my vision clashes with that of market trends or genre tropes. I want to give you a staggeringly beautiful cover and a raw story that doesn't cater to a bottom line, but to your enjoyment. Together we are free to enjoy this series as it was meant to be experienced.
If we are successful in funding this project, I am targeting a late October 2014 release across all platforms. Backers will receive their paperbacks and swag (where applicable) on that date, and digital copies will be delivered then as well.
WILD CARD was just the beginning for Catherine Sharp, Marius, Flynn and a host of other characters you have yet to meet. It would be my great honor to share these stories with you with high quality covers, print and digital options and a wide distribution that rivals what we had with WILD CARD. I hope you'll consider becoming part of this amazing series by backing UNVEILED.
Thank you and Nerdmaste,
UPDATE (April 8, 2014):
I have updated the reward tiers with the additional items:
$25 - $55 bundles will receive an exclusive story featuring Coyote!
$75 backers will receive the Coyote story, a Loki story AND an extra signed print copy of UNVEILED (total of 2).
$100 backers will get the Coyote story, the Loki story AND 2 extra signed copies of UNVEILED (total of 3).
I have added a second $60 option, this time with an editorial critique rather than a query critique.
Also, EVERY BACKER will now receive a digital wallpaper of the cover image!
WE DID IT!!!! As of this very moment we are funded and UNVEILED is a REAL BOOK!!! Seriously THANK YOU! I love you. Everyone who backed this Kickstarter is now entitled to tacklehugs from me into perpetuity. (Seriously, come to Phoenix Comic Con this year, tell me you're a backer and see what happens.)
That being said, we should probably talk about stretch goals. We have 5 days left and we can make the most of it. So here's what I'm thinking.
UNLOCKED! $6000 - It goes back to you. I will put together a release party in the Phoenix metro area and find some way to stream something live for those who can't be here.
$6500 - I will put all of the short stories (The Coyote, Maui, Loki and Eris vignettes, plus Belize Navidad and Jewel of the Aisle) into one compilation, and release it as an ebook. (Sorry, guys, the Puck story will have to wait for later. That one is special.)
$6600 - I will add "Les Bon Temps", a story centered on Marius, to the above compilation.
$7000+ - Everything above and beyond will go toward publishing UNINVITED (Book 3 in the C# series) in mid 2015. UNINVITED is finished, too. So it's a matter of edits, cover art and formatting.
Thank you all so much. <3
Risks and challenges
Well, the good news is that UNVEILED is already written. She comes in at a modest 280 pages currently, but that could change with editing. Most of the heavy lifting--so to speak--is done.
Potential challenges that could come up mostly involve timing. I will meet all of my editorial deadlines with the same zeal I have in the past. My attitude is that "early" is on time, and "on time" is late. I will be no less punctual in meeting all of my deadlines. Also, in selecting Danielle Poiesz I have paired myself with a consummate professional. I have no doubt that she, too, will meet her deadlines while churning out a stellar product.
Another possible roadblock is fulfillment. It is difficult to gauge how many backers will fund the print option or select poker chips. To combat this uncertainty, I have set the goal to cover the costs of printing, shipping and fulfilling the orders of up to 200 backers. Should we surpass our goal of $5500, the incentives cover the cost of new orders for print copies, poker chips and bookmarks. I already have a stock of chips and bookmarks on hand and ready to ship. The makers of these items are on hand to create more should the need arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
