Last year 118 backers helped to fund the urban fantasy novel UNVEILED, a sequel to my debut novel WILD CARD. Together we raised $6500 to make UNVEILED better than its predecessor by putting it in print, getting it into indie bookstores and the hands of new readers.
Since then, UNVEILED has done well and the Cat Sharp series has been loved by readers from around the world. In early 2015, the publication rights to WILD CARD reverted back to me and I self-published a new edition with a new cover by our beloved artist Nathalia Suellen (covers in the picture above). Both WILD CARD and UNVEILED are available in print and in digital formats on Amazon, Nook, iTunes, Kobo, Oyster and more.
Even more exciting is the news that audio books of both WILD CARD and UNVEILED are in production with voice actress Mandy Nelson. WILD CARD will be coming to Amazon, Audible and iTunes at the end of this year with UNVEILED following in early 2016.
Now, it's time to do more. UNINVITED, Book 3 in the Etudes in C# series has been sitting, waiting for its time to shine. That time is now.
This book picks up a little less than a year after the events of UNVEILED. It's technomancer Catherine Sharp's birthday and she's got a strange present waiting on her doorstep. Marius is back and he's in trouble. The lords of several underworlds are after him, and with multiple supernatural factions expending all of their resources to trap the satyr, he needs help that can only come from the aid of a "bigger fish". Things only get worse for Cat when she discovers that the Sileni, an ancient order of satyrs, want to get to Marius with almost as much ruthlessness as those who want to kill him. Family intrigue, seething deities and zealots make helping Marius nigh impossible.
Then there's Cat's own feelings to wrestle with.
"I think I'll take my chance with the monsters." - Cat Sharp
Where You Come In
Last year you helped me raise $6500 for the editing, formatting, printing, copyright and ISBN costs of producing UNVEILED. Your funds also went into manufacturing unique swag items like bookmarks and poker chips, consignment fees at indie bookstores, and even the stretch goal of a launch party at Changing Hands Bookstore.
Funds raised with this Kickstarter campaign will go toward most of those same areas. Danielle Poiesz at Double Vision Editorial will be back to edit UNINVITED. Nathalia Suellen will be doing the cover art again. And we'll have a new limited edition poker chip designed by myself, Emma Lysyk and Zach Reddy (his artwork is the main picture for this Kickstarter).
So why am I asking for an additional $2000?
First of all, for UNVEILED artist Emma Lysyk was good enough to work for the cost of materials. I am not comfortable with doing that again. This time, I will be paying both Emma and Zach for their time as well as the materials and design work.
Also, I learned from the experience of UNVEILED and the re-release of WILD CARD that I am not enough in terms of publicity and advertising. This time I want to hire publicist Beverly Bambury. Beverly has extensive experience working with indie authors, large houses and small presses alike. She works with each creator to tailor a cohesive and successful PR campaign that will expand the readership of a given book. And she specializes in sci-fi, fantasy and spec fic.
As I did with UNVEILED, I want to do more with UNINVITED. With UNVEILED we went into new territory and offered backers print editions of Cat Sharp. This time, backers will have the option of an audio book thanks to Mandy Nelson. There will also be a greater variety of merch available both during the Kickstarter and in the webstore I'll be setting up after the campaign's completion.
As you can see to the right, we have a variety of rewards for every financial level that cater to the media preference of you, the backer. You'll get UNINVITED in your selected edition (digital, print, audio). There will also be limited edition swag, the chance to name a character after yourself or a friend, and the opportunity to get a first glimpse at "Insatiable", a short story told during the events of UNINVITED from the point of view of Marius!
REWARD UPDATE: I've added several new tiers. Backers choosing rewards $100 and above will receive a deck of playing cards custom printed with your favorite Cat Sharp cover. (Example below.)
Also... The Cat & Marius print by Zach Reddy (pictured below) will be added to all rewards above $50. (Digital-only tiers will receive a digital file of the image.) The Cat & Marius "Obama" style posters (below) are available to those giving over $100. (Digital-only tiers get digital files.) AND anyone backing at $10 or more on a non-digital-only tier will get at least one of the buttons offered.
- $10 & $15 tiers - 1 button (your choice of design)
- $25 - $50 - 2 buttons (your choice of design) All higher tiers get all four button designs.
- $125 and higher will also get a random button of the Cat or Marius Obama-style design.
- $500 and $750 will get both Cat AND Marius Obama-style buttons.
AND! We've got a set of Trickster dice designed by Cat Sharp fan and maker Andrew Terranova. The dice are 3D printed six-sided dice with a symbol for our 6 Trickster gods on each side.
- Web - Anansi
- Pictoglyph - Coyote
- Fish hook - Maui
- Ansuz - Loki
- Oak leaf - Puck
- Apple - Eris
The base color of the dice is yet to be determined and the symbols may be filled in with color for better visibility. You can see the prototypes below and the 3D printing models by Andrew Terranova here.
Last year, I ate fire when we hit the 50% mark. This time, well, I'm not sure it would be wise to try to escalate on that point. When we hit certain milestones in the campaign, the following are ways I will celebrate.
25% ($2,125) - a video of gratitude. Possibly a cat belly.
50% ($4,250) - I will post the rough draft of Chapter 1 for Backers Only! Two new options for buttons will be offered. (POSTED)
75% ($6,375) - Three button options. Buttons offered on all non-digital-only tiers.
100% ($8,500) - I will do a full hour live Google Hangout Q&A chat. Four options for buttons will be offered.
Risks and challenges
The risks with this project are very minimal. The rough draft of the book is complete and I've already started editing it on my own. After we fund, it will get more attention from Danielle Poiesz from Double Vision Editorial.
Having successfully run a Kickstarter before, I know what to expect in terms of fulfillment and how I can improve on what was generally an already-smooth process.
Everyone I'm working with on this project is a consummate professional. Danielle, Nathalia, Emma, Zach, Mandy; everyone puts out reliable, quality work that I am proud to feature.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
