Paint Strokes of Hope - INTRODUCTION
Hello, I am Florence de Bretagne, the main artist at Paint Strokes of Hope. At Paint Strokes of Hope we are passionate about bringing hope and joy through Art.
For the past 10 years we have painted more than 100 murals at numerous schools throughout the San Francisco Bay Area with the intention to brighten up the world and make students and teachers want to go to school every morning. We want to bring life, positive energy, and love, to communities who are very challenged in the current world.
We believe that murals have the power to bring new life and new energy. We like to transform the dull concrete environments at many schools into beautiful landscapes filled with uplifting imagery from nature like waterfalls and forests.
Murals have a huge impact on the whole community, in countless ways:
- Painting a mural is a bonding experience for the community (in fact local companies and/or churches sometimes join in the work as a team building event.) We build bridges at Paint Strokes of Hope! We put our efforts and work together to achieve beauty and give back to the community.
- The students get to see all the hard work put into painting a mural, which instills a growth mindset in them. They also get to witness firsthand what it’s like to be an artist, which is increasingly rare sight in Silicon Valley where the focus is usually so much on math and science.
- Murals make students want to go to school and love their school environment. It gives the school a new look, one of professionalism and modernism. It creates a strong sense of community.
- Murals help children improve academically, as they are driven to attend school and learn when they feel like they are in a safe and caring environment beautified and enlivened by the murals around them. They also learn firsthand that Art is a valued part of the school and their education.
- Murals bring feelings of happiness, inclusion and pride. When the murals are about diversity they help the local community feel included.
- The murals have touched people way beyond what we initially imagined. At Paint Strokes of Hope we received incredible testimonies over the years. One child wrote a thank you note saying that he felt like he would make friends more easily because seeing our mural with kids from all different ethnic backgrounds joyfully holding hands together inspired him to believe that kids from all backgrounds could get along and be friends. Another child wrote us a thank you note saying that because of his severe arthritis he was struggling to go to school every morning, but as soon as we started painting murals at his school, he really wanted to go to school to look at all the beauty on the walls.
OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT IN REDWOOD CITY, AT THREE DIFFERENT SCHOOLS:
The Redwood City School District will undergo big changes next fall with four schools closing and several others merging. The whole community of principals, teachers, and families, will have to adjust to this new situation. This is why it is more important than ever to make the remaining schools look inviting, appealing, and warm. At Paint Strokes of Hope we want to help schools look like safe environments where students are excited to go and thrive. We believe that murals can do that. We're passionate about changing the world and making an impact that affects all of us in the community. We hope to share that passion with you and have you join us on this journey.
# PROJECT 1: SELBY LANE SCHOOL
Selby Lane is located in Atherton CA, and is part of the Redwood City School District. In the fall, Adelante School will merge with Selby. The challenge will be to unify both school communities (students, parents, teachers, staff and community members and partners) under one Spanish Immersion school vision.
The mural will be 175 feet long by 10 feet high. Work on the mural will begin in March and end in May 2019. The design will be birds and flowers. This dull concrete wall will come alive with a beautiful array of colors, designs and whimsical imagery. The fundraising goal for that very large project is $10,000. Timeline for this huge project is spring 2019, starting mid-March, right after the campaign.
#2 PROJECT 2: HOOVER COMMUNITY SCHOOL
Mr. Carranza, the principal says about his school: "Our school has historically been a very impacted community on the east side of town. We serve approximately 650 students from low socio-economic backgrounds, 87% of our students qualify for free and/or reduced lunches, with a very high percentage of English Language learners. Despite all these challenges, Hoover rises daily to build an academic community composed of active parents, and proud students who strive to be the best.
The mural will beautify our campus while at the same time promoting a sense of pride, accomplishment and belonging."
Budget needed for that project: an additional $3,000. Timeline: the mural will be painted right after the summer 2019.
With your help and support, we really hope to bring lively colors to these two blank walls:
These two walls are next to each other, in the middle-school area. The design will represent the dual themes of diversity and unity. It will be a giant puzzle with each piece unique and beautiful, making a masterpiece when they're all put together!
#3 PROJECT 3: HENRY FORD
Henry Ford is a neighborhood school in the Redwood City school district which celebrates the diversity of its current 400 kindergarten through fifth grade students. The school’s principal Ms. Griffiths says "We strive to create an atmosphere of academic excellence in a safe and nurturing environment for all students. Next year we will be taking in about half of one of the closed schools and also will be adding at least a class per grade level. To make all newcomers feel welcome, incorporate some of their culture into ours and still encourage our Mustang traditions will be a learning process for all of us. Art is a language unto itself, bridging differences in culture, age and outlook. Having murals would help us with this transition."
We, at Paint Strokes of Hope, dream of bringing colors and light to these big large dull walls along the playground. The only mural they have is an old and damaged one which will also need a lot of fixing, which we'll do as a bonus gift if we get to paint these two murals!
The fundraising goal for that mural above is $4,000.
For the second wall (pictured below) the fundraising goal is $3,000.
Timeline for both walls is Sept-Oct 2019
A Kickstarter campaign is an all-or-nothing campaign which means that if the goal is not reached nothing will happen.
To make sure that at least one project will be achieved, and with the hope that the two other projects at the two other schools will be possible too, we set up three goals: THE goal (10K) and several other stretched goals.
- First and all-or-nothing-goal: $10K for the mural at Selby on the 175 feet long wall
- Additional goal: $3K for the murals at Hoover
- Two Additional Stretch Goals: $4K for the HF1 wall at Henry Ford; and $3K for the HF2 wall
We sincerely wish to brighten up the lives of all these families and school communities. Your kind support for our activities is essential, so please help us realize this goal! The impact is huge: the entire mural painting process involves so many people (see the additional pics below with students and various community members) and brings them all together to achieve something positive that will make our world a better place to live. We also want to reward your generous donations by giving you many ways to become a part of the transformational process for these school communities: updates, behind-the-scenes secrets, opportunities to paint with your child, French dinner, etc. Look at all the great rewards proposed on the right side of the campaign! And thank you for reading, watching and supporting these projects!!! It takes a village to make great things happen!

Risks and challenges
One big challenge is the number of people involved in those mural projects: the principals, the teachers, and the students and their families. With multiple constituencies and viewpoints, I, as an artist, have to make sure 99% of the people will be happy with the murals. As an independent artist with limited resources and time, it’s sometimes challenging to accommodate all the viewpoints, to orchestrate and guide everyone, and to make sure that at the end the mural looks beautiful and professional. However, I am always inspired when the projects come to fruition and bring together all members of the community and the individual and corporate sponsors who made it happen.
Another challenge is the scale of these projects. The wall at Selby is so large that I estimate we'll start the work in March and will finish in May. But sometimes, because of the large scope of the project and circumstances beyond my control, the project can experience delays. However, I try my best to complete the projects within the given time frame.
Your contribution will make the vision and scope of these fantastic projects come to life!
Thank you for your support!
