MAKING BEAUTIFUL THINGS
Welcome to the beginning of Beautiful Things, a QPOC (queer people of color) intergenerational love story. The film follows Mona and Hazel, with a romance nuanced by motherhood and self-doubt with a Brooklyn backdrop. We're excited to bring this story to you, but this Kickstarter also doubles as way to give back. Follow our Facebook page to get notes, tips and tricks from professional creators. You can also follow our spending on our public access budget.
But why would you do that?? If the world can see how the production spends its money then…what? I’ll tell you what. It keeps us accountable, to our mission and to our supporters. An open access budget also gives other filmmakers a guideline if they want to jumpstart their own scripts. We're very fortunate to be in this field, and we've built our experience with Emmy-award winning mentors, years navigating the Brooklyn independent filmmaking scene, and a bit of well-timed fearlessness.
It’s time to pay it forward, because we want to support as much inclusive storytelling as we can.
Mona is a 23-year old musician stumbling through her life in Brooklyn. Just when she thinks she’s found some stability, she meets Hazel in her local grocery store. Hazel reciprocates this gravitation, and the instant flame continues even after Mona learns of Hazel’s 6 year-old son, Luna. Mona’s roommates, however, are worried about Hazel’s intentions.
Say hi to our Director, Paige Polk! A White House South by South Lawn Nominee, she's noted for captivating socially driven filmmaking and has done minority-focused media work around the world.
Meet our Director of Photography, Carla Tramullas. She's an Emmy award-winning storyteller, and her projects stand at the crossroads of documentary, cinema and art. Check out some of her work!
On our production team we have Nneka Njoku and Katherine Fana! Born in Nigeria and raised in Trinidad, Scotland, and the US, Nneka's transatlantic experience has only amplified her passion for telling inclusive stories. Katherine has been involved in more than forty independent and union productions, and is fascinated by the process of turning stories into experiences.
Want to know what we're spending your money on? You can watch our budget in real time on our public Google Sheet. The moment we spend a dollar, we put it online. We want full transparency on this project, which means you get to see what it takes to bring a film to life.
For all the visual learners out there, here's our projected budget below.
FILMING DATES: April 1-2 & April 8-9
Interested in joining the project? We'd love to have you on our team - see the links below for more details.
Risks and challenges
The name of this game is transparency, so we're more than happy to share with you what we're working with. Though paying our cast & crew is a priority, we're not doing this for the money. We're making Beautiful Things because we believe in the mission and the project. We want to help creators make their own art while we're making ours.
That being said, we do have day jobs that take up a significant portion of our time. But we're also building an experienced team who has gone through the ringer when it comes film shoots - we know how to problem solve and work efficiently. Our goal is to shoot in April and go straight into post-production.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
