About

Pacifica Statue is now poised for her own homecoming! Rebuild her!

The Pacifica II Statue Project is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organized to oversee the construction and installation of an 80-foot tall replica of the original Pacifica on Treasure Island. Specifically, working within the Island’s public art policy and guidelines, our goal is to install Pacifica II in front of Building 1, one of the only remaining structures from the World’s Fair. Near the entrance to the Island, Building 1 has a semi-circular facade with space for Pacifica that is currently unused and available. Building 1 is also highly visible from a plentitude of vantage points along the Embarcadero, situating the Pacifica, once again, in the heart of San Francisco Bay.

During her reign, the Pacifica Statue was lovingly referred to as the 'Statue of Liberty of the West.' Regrettably torn down to create a Naval base during WWII, the Pacifica stood on Treasure Island as a symbol of innovation and peace. She was the theme monument for the 1939-40 San Francisco World’s Fair Golden Gate International Exposition, the visionary event the completely man-made Treasure Island was originally developed for. Now, Treasure Island has been zoned for redevelopment. The build plans mark the country’s leading example of sustainable redevelopment.

Our organization is excited about Treasure Island’s redevelopment, and feel it is important that the Island remain connected to its progressive and peaceful roots. We aim to return Pacifica to her former glory as a significant work of public art and cultural asset to our region.  Our goal is to establish a worldwide presence for The Pacifica Statue and bring recognition to Treasure Island’s progress in green urban development.

Pacifica II will be a beautiful, dramatic piece of public art and an important cultural asset. She will stand tall and proud, an iconic figure symbolizing the history of Treasure Island. Pacifica II will also represent a bridge between the Island’s legacy of peace, innovation, and diversity, with the current chapter the Island is heading into - one of progressive ideas, community action, civic pride, and a future filled with promise.

We believe that in preserving our history, we are inspiring a more sustainable, innovative and positive future.

INSTALLATION

Pacifica II will merge harmoniously within the environment of Treasure Island.  Fabrication will include a complex steel armature to create a  structurally sound framework.  For its construction, the Pacifica II Statue will be built through an environmentally friendly building process. She will be formed in Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP), which is a fiberglass composite, which is both light-weight and enduring with a low carbon footprint.  This modern material will also allow the statue to be easily moved in order to readily accommodate Treasure Island’s as-yet-finalized redevelopment plans.

Visible from across the Bay at San Francisco’s Ferry Building, The Pacifica II Statue will pose no risk to its surrounding environment, and will only enhance the economic viability of Treasure Island as a destination for the millions of tourists who visit our region every year.

FUNDRAISING GOALS
Our project is segmented into four phases. With the 30% we raised towards completion of Phase I, we’ve made steady progress; however, much remains to be done.  Our goal is to seek funding only from private citizens and private sponsors. Government funds will not be solicited.

We ask you to partner with us.  We need your donations and community support to help us manage the many administrative details and navigate the permitting process to facilitate the rebuilding of Pacifica II.

Phase I - Planning, Fundraising, Architecture Design, Engineering Assessment and Permits
Phase II - Fundraising, Construction and Location Preparation
Phase III - Fundraising, Relocation of Statue, Assembly and Installation
Phase IV - Fundraising, Public-Relations, Post-Structural Assessments and Maintenance

Risks and challenges

As a contributor to Pacifica at this early stage you are literally enabling us to “kickstart” her construction and installation, meaning that our project cannot gain steam without the essential organizational capacity – and, of course, priceless blueprints – you’re providing us with.

After we successfully raise $10,000, we will not only be poised to pay our artist for his shovel-ready plans for Pacifica’s installation, but we will be able to engage professionals in preparing our site on Treasure Island in front of Building 1 for her return. In Phase II we will see the statue – all 80-feet of her – built in segments and readied for ultimate transportation and reassembly on Treasure Island. Concurrently, we will launch a giving campaign focused on stewarding and sustaining Pacifica in the coming decades, including development of the area to make sure Pacifica is an instructive and accessible asset and testament to peace, humanity and progress.

One possible obstacle – which we can easily surmount, with your help – is communicating the urgency and imperative of Pacifica’s construction to coincide not only with the 75th anniversary of the World’s Fair, but also the region’s adoption of our new Bay Bridge, whose new sightlines will literally make Treasure Island more visible to tens of thousands of commuters daily. It is your word-of-mouth, your engagement that will enable us to build a corps of stakeholders who are not only fluent in the statue’s past but invested in its – and Treasure Island’s – future.

Another salient question is: how are we going to raise the approximately $2.3 million it’ll take to finish rebuilding Pacifica and the subsequent funding needed to maintain and protect her? This is exactly what your contribution will help us forecast. At present we are drafting a Sustainability Plan in anticipation of Pacifica’s completion, inclusive of aggressive solicitation of the many individual, corporate and foundational partnerships in the Bay Area, including a planned giving campaign to create an endowment to guarantee Pacifica’s protection in the coming decades. It is important to remember at this stage that many who are living – and sadly, like Esther Williams and Sal DeGuarda, recently departed – who have wished to see the rebuilding of Pacifica fast-tracked and have lent their names and resources in expediting this all too important endeavor.

Yet another obstacle – and this is one we want to be as candid about as possible – is anticipating a change in the final home of Pacifica, in the event that Building 1 is designated for other purposes once Treasure Island’s watershed redevelopment plans are finalized. How will we raise the funds to move her then? Can we generate sufficient community interest in the statue’s future to relocate her off of Treasure Island, if need be?

These are all reasonable concerns, and ones we ruminate on – and devise strategies to solve – on a daily basis. Construction delays, political considerations, giving campaigns … while some challenges are disconcerting and untimely, they are not insurmountable. Of the risks we can envision, the biggest is not engaging, involving and respecting you, a stakeholder in the Pacifica, in her reconstruction and installation. You are emblematic of all she symbolizes and inspires – an icon and beacon of openness, tolerance, and human advancement.
